Fellas i am really looking forward to the upcoming Hog hunt, and was curious as to what you might be packing into the field? Im torn between my 59lb Big Five and my 73lb Lofton, ill be shooting ash arrows out of either. What are your thoughts on your gear? :campfire:
48@27 Hill style bow of some sort with Surewood shafts and Simmons tiger sharks.RC
50@27 1/2 with GT 35/55 with 250 up WW and some wood arrows also
Haha! I've been debating the same thing and haven't been able to tie myself down yet. So far I'm looking at my 47@26 Half Breed which is currently shooting the lights out for me but I've got a 54@26 Cheetah on its way to me as we speak that looks amazing. I'll be shooting beman mfx arrows with zwickey delta heads and 125 gr steel inserts plus weight tubes for a total of 650 gr or thereabouts.
This will be my first ever hog hunt and. I can't wait!
RC, the land sharks look devistating!I think they will deffinately get the job done. Think ill use the tried and true Zwickey Deltas.
Rosco, i feel a little envy coming on, knowing that youve got a Cheetah on the way! :notworthy:
Only one cure for Cheetah envy - cave in and order one! Lol. Mines got an ebony riser and wine colored wrap, can't wait to see it face to face!
Wow, sounds like a great combination! Love to see some pics when it arives. The anticipation of the arrival of a new bow is a killer.
What are the specs on it Rosco?
As above 54@26, 66 inches, cut 1/16th from centre. It'll be a step up in weight for me but I'm dying to see how it deals with some heavy arrows.
Either my 73@28 Hill Crocodile or my NW Classic 80@28 (Picking it up from Steve Turay himself next week at the Spring Fling in 'Bama)
Heritage 350 Carbon Shafts with 100 grain brass insert, 100 grain steel adapter and 160 grain STOS most likely. I am planning to try some Grizzlies soon so the broadhead could change but the arrow will stay pretty close to the same.
OOps! my bad, I reread your post and found the specs. :banghead:
Ive never hunted hog before, so its kind of enlightening to see what equipment others are gonna be shooting. :campfire:
Glad to see that you'll be getting the Northern Mist soon, Steve. Should be a sweet shooting bow.
I hope to have a new ShrewHill, but if not, I'll use either a 70" 50@28 Cheetah with some 65-70 footed Surewoods and 135 Simmons Tigersharks, or a 69" 45@29 Halfbreed with 65-70 footed Surewoods and 165 grain Simmons Interceptors.
55lb Centaur w/ GT 5575, 220gr Muzzy Phantom. Total weight 530gr.
Just like any animal you hunt shot placement is key. If you shoot high you will hit shield or any bad placement shot and they will run. You will be surprise how strong will they are to keep living even being wounded. When I hit them correctly they always face plant to the dirt.
I'm bring my Big 5, 50@28, wood arrows with 2 blade Magnus or Ace 125 gr. broadheads. The Magnus has been my choice for 15 years.
Darren
I'm noting that some of you southern guys who hunt hogs regularly aren't shooting as heavy a bow as I would have thought.
What does the voice of experience say is a good baseline set up for hogs using a Hill style bow?
Just bring what you are comfortable with. I'd say 40#28" on the low end. My two choices are actually around 60@30 and 53@30.5, even though they are marked 50@28 and 45@29, so they aren't exactly on the low end. The lighter bow spits an arrow out as fast as a 60@28 drawn to 28.
Whatever weight you choose, go with a heavy arrow. Even with a 40@28 or lighter, a 550 grain arrow isn't too heavy. Really, the most important thing is to know where to hit them and being able to put your broadhead where you want it to go.
A well tuned bow and arrow setup, get as close as you can, as perfect a shot placement as possible, and a VERY SHARP BROADHEAD. The rest is strictly opinion.
Rossco-
I shot hogs with 45lb bows. I like wood arrows with sharp broadheads and good shot placement.
Darren
I will be using my 55# lofton choctaw hunter with wood arrows tipped with zwickey delta's carried in a back quiver.
Fellow hunters-
As this 2013 HH Hog Hunt will be my FIRST bowhunt ever!!! (bowhunting is not legal in Germany) I would like to ask you for your advice and some hints on the set-up.
I will bring my Jerry Hill LB 69" 57@30" for this hunt. Wood arrows with 125 grs 2-blade-broadheads (Magnus Journeyman??)weighing about 585 grs total. Would this be sufficient for these critters?
Thanks for taking the time to share some info. I am really exited about this event. YEAH!
Vincent
Sounds just about perfect Vincent.
Vincent, I am very happy for you. I imagine that we can only a little bit understand how much it means for you to finally be able to bowhunt wild game. I am proud that you chose our country, and glad that you will be among such as Trad Gang can offer. There will be excellent hunters with high standards all around you, and I have no doubt that strong friendships will be forged as you live a hunt that will add joy to your lifetime of memories.
Killdeer :campfire:
Shot this guy with 42#@28 Griffin...shoot whatever you use deer hunting. Now if it's legal where you're hog hunting, the second picture might be appropriate...tippit

Killdeer-
thank you for your kind and wise words.
I feel honoured to read my name on this special hunt`s list among those great hunters and longbow enthusiasts - not to mention the outlook to stalk the same grounds with them, to share their fellowship at the campfire. What an adventure for a humble German archer..... I can`t think of a better company!
Vincent :campfire:
tippit, what was shot placement and how did you fare on the shield? I shot this hog with a 50@28 Treadway Black Swamp at 18 yards, had double lung kill and the hog only went about 50 yards, but I had next to no blood trail and did not penetrate the off side shield. I used GT 3555 arrow with 2 blade Zwickey Delta on a steel BH adapter--abou 525 grains total arrow weight. The hog weighed right at 160#
