I don't wear an armguard and the string doesn't hit my arm. Am I doing something wrong?
Of course you're doing something wrong!
You are a human, right? :readit:
And a guy? :readit: :readit:
Well? :saywhat:
But we won't rat you out. :campfire:
Killdeer
If you are shooting a recurve it shouldn't hit your arm unless you lock your elbow and are double jointed. If a longbow then you are shooting like me and yes, that's bad.
While holding your bow, tuist your bow elbo out away, this should help.
Note: your elbow won't twist unless it is holding something or resting on something!!
Yes Kelldeer, Men don't check their spelling before pulling the trigger!
Ok Killy, I am human, but I'm not sure being a guy has anything to do with it. Strong words for someone slightly outnumbered here! ;)
On a more serious note I am shooting a recurve right now. If not hitting my arm is ok why do so many people wear armguards?
To keep from hitting their arms...or to just look cool. :wavey:
never wear one unless to keep heaver cloths out of the way
Or seriously, sometimes to just keep your sleeve out of the way...
One wears an armguard for the clothes, and for the OCCASIONAL time when you make a mistake and get hit by the string dead on, hurting like a mo.
Today I forgot mine and shot without it. No problem.
I do the same unless Im wearing a heavy coat, hope we aint doing nothing wrong!
You'll like this one Killy. my favorite arm guard for cold weather or while wearing rain gear is a knee high nylon stocking with the toe cut out.
My wife couldn't figure out how come one of her black ones always came up missing in the laundry till she saw it come out of my pack one day with the toe missing. :bigsmyl:
Glad she didn't find it before she saw hers were missing.
I always wear one, especialy in warm weather with bare arms. If the srting hits your arm just once, you will start fixating on it and maybe even anticipating it to the point of flinching. It has happened to me. I never hit my arm nowdays but I dont even think about it when I am wearing my armguard. It way be just mental but it works for me.

Your missing out on the fun of peeling off the first layer or two of skin :saywhat:
When hunting I am wearing wool and figured it would be quieter if the string hit my jacket rather than a hard piece of leather.
The fact that I don't need to wear one had me thinking I might be twisting the bow, keeping the string from hitting my arm.
I remember the welts from my compound days.
I didn't wear one until I had a knock blow up on one of my woodies. Left my arm purple from elbow to wrist. Now I always wear one on bare skin, don't with heavy clothing unless I feel it might be needed to hold back the cloth.
If under normal circumstances the string hits my arm with my recurve, I am doing something horribly wrong.
I don't wear an arm guard because the string never slaps my arm. Even with heavy clothes on, I don't wear an arm guard and the string still doesn't slap my clothes.
I attribute this to my bows which are cut 3/16' past center.
If I shoot a bow cut to center, the string does slap my arm.
You wear one to look cool..
You wear one to keep sleeve out of the way..
Every member here should wear a M.A.L. Armguard.
Sorry couldn't resist....

Its cause they make you look buff in front of the ladies. :saywhat:
Killy.... I'm with Catskill Longbow. Being a man has nothing to do with being human.
:D
What he said!
The only time i ever wear an armguard is when I have bulky clothes on my arms. When in short sleeves the string never hits my arm.
It could mean you are doing something right!
Bisch
I don't wear an arm guard either and hardly ever hit my arm. Its the way i bend my arm when i shoot.
I will say though, Killy is family and has been around a long time. Careful what you say about family. Dats right, I got your back Kathy.
Mike, your arm guard is the only one I wear. I have several pretty hand made ones but yours is my go to guard.
I don't hit my arm very often but if I do and I don't have a guard on, as soon as the swelling starts it brings that spot right in line with my string every time :scared: Safer with an arm guard.
Ken, you should check out one of Mikes guards.
I wear an arm guard all the time just in case I do hit my arm it won't leave me sore for days.
Kirk, I like your idea with the wife's half stocking. Wouldn't help much on bare arms though!! :biglaugh:
I have a nice Steve Catts armguard I bought at Denton a few years back. I have not worn it in a long time due to the fact that I don't hit my arm. I sure do remember the welts from the wheelbow though.
Jack, no worries about Killy bashing-all in jest! I know better than to start knocking someone with her clout!
I rarely hit my arm....that being said I always use an arm guard so I never hit my clothes or my arm. I have worn one since 1967 when I always hit my arm, and will wear one this afternoon when I shoot a few! Just a habit I guess!
Depends on the type of bow. RD or recurve I never wore one unless I had bulky sleves. Straight with a low BH and I have to wear one so I don't get stung.
If you are wearing them just for looks maybe one for the spring arm also how about chin gaurds you can look like a hockey player
No chin guards for me. I just knocked out a couple of teeth for the hockey look. My husband, Mockingbird, has a little KHB from Elk Ridge that he is fond of. That bow will make me run for the arm guard. Mockingbird is a real man, though. He shot with me last weekend and never went into his quiver for the guard.
His bruises are awesome works of swirling, ever-changing colors that will evolve for over a week. Van Gogh could never dream such. Maybe Timothy Leary could. I think that the welts are a rite of passage, something we all go through and share. They bind us together into a special little community, kinda like ritual scarring of warrior societies. OK, maybe not. ;)
