Title: what serving?
Post by: Skipmaster1 on February 16, 2012, 12:05:00 AM
My nocks are too tight so instead of trying to "fix" each nock I want to re-serve my strings. What type of serving would you recommend? I want a material that will hold up well.

What nocks are you using, what poundage are you shooting, what is your bowstring material and how many strands is in your bowstring?

For both of my 42# and 37# recurves, my flemish style bowstrings are made up with 12 strands of Dyna97 fast flight material. Since I use Easton Super Nocks, my serving is 62XS for durability in size (.025).

I'm shooting between 50 and 60#'s. The strings are 6 strands of 450+ and 2 strands of B50. The nocks are x nocks

You can buy either round or flat serving and some in two sizes.

Greg, I like Halo material....might take some experimenting to get the right fit bud. Best to have a few different sizes on hand.

They make alot of different diameter servings. What are you string spec's now, what type of string and serving are you using now? I have servings likie .017,.018,.019,.021,.024,.025 and .026 and there a few more different diameters. There is also what type of nocks are you shooting now?If you are using the standard push-in nock like on GT.The Easton 3D Super nock, they have the largest and deepest throat of those types of nocks. These nocks fit uni-bushings in aluminum and most standard size carbons with a .246 ID.

Greg,

I shoot roughly the same thing... mines 8 strands of 450+... I'm like Guru in that I really like the Halo serving... nice and slick... with the 8 strands I use the .024 diameter and get a good fit on the H Nock and X Nock...  A lot of it depends on how "tight" you want it... mine "snap" on, but will come right off with a slight bump to the string...

OK.....I was told a long time ago, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Skipmaster1 ,why the 2 stands of B-50 in your string of 450+, doesn't the different stretch rates make a difference? For some reason does 2 strands make a difference?      Just wondering!!

I used to get all twisted up in doing the math.  Bottom line and quickest solution is to get a variety of different diameter serving material on hand.  Do a quick short test serving, check for nock fit, adjust up or down in thread size, repeat until you get the fit you like.  It took longer to type this than it takes me to pick the right serving diameter for a particular set of nocks.

Halo or Crown, both wear like iron and give a good release.

I'm partial to 62XS or Halo.  Both are very durable.  Halo feels slicker, but with a good glove or tab I can't tell a difference in release.  Halo will be more apt to slip, especially if you use a large diameter serving on a small diameter string.

What size depends on what string material you are using, how many strands, and what type nocks you use on your arrows.  You can get 2 or 3 sizes of serving, or get a smaller size and build up the nock point with dental floss to get the fit you want.

Those are the strings that Ron sends out with Shrews. I believe the B50 is to help dampen it. I don't know but I have tried other FF strings and they made the bow loud and full of vibration.

Thanks everyone. I'm not worried about the size, I'll get a few diameters and test, I just wanted to know what material to use. Think I'm gonna try Halo

Anyone have a good link on how to do a center serving? I watched a video and it seems pretty straight forward but I didn't know if there were different ways to do it.
