Hey Gang,
Well it's finally here. My hunting partner Ryan Kohatsu just put together his first traditional bowhunting DVD. Here is a brief overview of "INSTINCT".
"Ryan Kohatsu and Ryan Sanpei are just two guys who love to hunt. Hunting all their lives in Hawaii, it was only a matter of time before they crossed paths. After forming a hunting partnership in 2010, they decided to make a full commitment to spot and stalk stickbow hunting for the 2011 year. Knowing that their journey would be filled with life long lessons, they decided to document their candid journey from day one. Lacking confidence in their new endeavor, all they could trust was their INSTINCTS. Being relatively new to filming and stickbow hunting, they tried their best to portray "a day in the life" of hunting in Hawaii with their first DVD. Understandably, they've got a lot to improve on but with a lot of hard work and dedication they're hoping to one day hunt and film with confidence."
Let me know if you have any questions about the DVD. I'll be more than happy to answer them. Please keep in mind that we'll be on a 10 day hunt starting this coming Friday, so communication from then will depend on cell phone coverage in our hunting area.

Sorry, accidental double post.
Placed my order today, too. I saw your pre-teaser teaser a while back and have been waiting for this one to come out.
Archie
Footage looks good. Does the video have a music soundtrack or natural sound?
PV
Music sound track. It may not have that "traditional" feel. Let me know if can answer additional questions.
Thank you,

Ryan, thanks for sending me the premier copy to Michigan so I could view it before TwoTracks and KHALVERSON. I guess the short time we worked together at the Compton's booth paid off in a lifelong friendship! Aloha! :D ;)
Very cool!
Jason
Looking forward to this video and my own hawaii hunt for sometime, ordered mine today.
Mahalo Gang!
Hey Mike you forgot to mention that you were the guy in charge of all the final editing. Such a modest guy!!!! ;)
Many thanks to all,
Kohatsu and Sanpei

My copy has been shipped already, Thanks Ryan.
This will be good,Prolly have to go to Hawaii now. :jumper:
Hey Chuck,
On the way back from Michigan, I left my canoe with South. Maybe you could paddle it back to Hawaii for me? :D :D :D
The trailer looked awesome. Good luck with this and your future endeavors!
Bisch
Just placed my order :)
Been waiting for this to come out love your videos guys
Hope you get the next one out soon.
Been waiting for this one! Order made! Thanks, Ryan and Ryan!
Mine is already in the mail as well. Great customer service. I can't wait to watch it.
Just ordered one! Looking forward to it.
I was lucky enough to have been an early recipient of "Instinct" from Ryan S.. I am very gratefull to have recieved this gift :notworthy:
One word.....AWESOME!!! One of the best I've ever seen!
It has everything any trad bowhunting video should have!
The backdrop and scenery in the film as a whole is incredible....but some of the kill shot scenes are out of this world!
Some of the "coolest" critters ever filmed in a trad bowhunting dvd!
Anticipation and intensity thru the roof!!
Ryan and Ryan are both great in front and behind the camera.
I could go on...but for now I'll just say it's absolutely a must have for any trad bowhunting dvd library :campfire:
I cant wait to see it. Will be watching the mail box every day.
Copy coming to Canada eh! I'll be getting the trad buddies together for video night....Thanks Ryan and Ryan....Ryan

No Kidding, looks great!
I've been waiting for this one to get released.
There's nothing more fun than going to exotic places and hunting wild game you've never seen before. Some parts of the trailer reminded me of my Australian hunts. Plus, it is great to watch guys who know how to shoot, and how to have fun!
I am really looking forward to this.
Many thanks once again to everyone!
WOW! Thank you Curt for the unexpected and much appreciated review. It means a lot coming from you! :notworthy:
Randy, shipped yesterday. :)
Hawaii and Australia have very similar animals to hunt!
Ryan, Ryan and Ryan, that would make for a cool trad video :D
I really hope this DVD lives up to the Gang's expectations. Please keep in mind that we're only amateurs with video production. You could call it "DIY Video".
Aloha!
Ryan sent me the DVD a while back....and I agree with Curt....its a great DVD. Ryan and company really captured the spirit, and the lure of Hawaii is really COOL!!!
Great footage of the terrain as well as the hunt....don't miss it!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Ryan sent me a dvd before they were done with the final edit and I got to watch it a couple of times. It was killing me not to get on Trad Gang and tease you guys then. Don't be mis-lead by Ryan and Ryan's humility. The description on the back cover (Ryan's got the text quoted on the first post on this thread)WAY understates their experience, knowledge and abilities--both with the bow and the camera. Kohatsu did an EXCELLENT job editing the video and the native Hawaiian music makes a great soundtrack. You guys are going to love their work, can't wait for the next one.
Thank you Terry and South!
Like South mentioned, Kohatsu is the mastermind behind this project. He deserves all the credit. I'm just fortunate that he allows me to tag along with him.
The Hawaiian music featured on a few segments is from a CD that my high school friends put together. Another great bunch of guys and gals. We thought that it was a cool addition to a hawaii hunting video.
Mahalo!
Sanpei & Kohatsu
Watching it again right now!
When cade and I watched it for the first time the other night we were both riveted to the tv. I'm tellin' ya....when you watch this dvd you will be looking into hunting this "hunting paradise"!
Pretty cool to see Ryan K. hunting both right and left handed in the dvd.
And you wanna talk about 2 guys that have some great shooting form...wow!
I don't know if I've ever seen bluer skies and sea's in my life....
Ryan, leaving for Maui on Tuesday, but promised the wife I would leave the bow at home. It is KILLING me! Got one I could borrow when I get over there? One can only take so much of lying around in the warm sun on the beach!
Curt,
Very observant! Yeah Kohatsu's switch has been a pretty cool journey in itself! Thanks again for all your kind words. Very much appreciated bro!
Hey South,
Maui is the land of the HUGE goats!!!!...and deer...and pigs.......
BTW we'll be on Lanai for 10 days. Just sneak away from the beach, jump on the ferry and I'll have a bow waiting for you!!! If not I'll be sure to send you daily updates....
:goldtooth:
how long is the video?
really liked the trailer.
Arrow30,
It's one hour.
Thanks,
Ryan
Thank you much folks on the kind words! :)
This community is simply amazing! And all your support in promoting our loved activity is very appreciated and needed today.
I have not been a traditional shooter/bowhunter very long by comparison, but aside from the challenge and fun in it, I'm finding that the traditional community is very positive and encouraging.
Bowhunting has always been the passion. However, capturing the action is just as much if not even more exciting. We're just a small two-man crew and I wish we could show you all the missed opportunities. I had no idea how tough it would be to get a DVD out but now that it's done, I can't think of anything else anymore. Trying to concentrate on the day job but constantly thinking of the next story to tell is literally a disease I'm struggling with now. A disease that only the next hunt can temporarily cure.
As stated on the video, Sanpei and I will be heading over to the island of Lanai tomorrow to bowhunt Axis Deer. Axis Deer might have a bit of a negative connotation with high fences and game ranches. However, Lanai's herd is 100% wild. No high fences and all spot and stalk public hunt. Most local bowhunters here would argue that the Axis is the toughest animal to take with bow here and maybe impossible to film spot and stalk.
We'll be there for 10 days with 8 days to hunt. We may never get a deer, but no matter; it's the effort that we're there for.
Thanks again for all the support and hope your 2012 year brings great success!
Much Aloha, - Ryan Kohatsu
Ryan K., That was very well said my friend...
I've been at this for a long time and I've never really been excited to try to get to your part of the world to bowhunt, but I am now! :campfire:
And by the way....welcome to the "right" side of the bow, we're proud to have ya!! :clapper:
I've hunted more than a bit. Had way more than my share of success and bloody arrows.
But I will say that free-ranging Axis Deer (or as I know them from hunting in Australia, Chital) are by far the most difficult animal I have hunted. By far!
I've stalked and killed pronghorn antelope with a longbow, but I have failed miserably to do the same with Chital. They seem to "see" everything, especially the last one inch of draw.
I wish you two the best of luck, and I am hoping the camera is rolling when arrows strike home!

Thanks Curt! Yes, I now do feel like I am on the "right" side of the bow. It's about time! It was so hard to switch over, but it is amazing what the human body can learn in a short amount of time. Be sure to let us know when you make the journey out!
Rik: I'm glad others have experienced or can appreciate the difficulty of the Axis on their own terms. They are truly a wily animal and all the game ranches do not do this amazing species justice. That said, I hope luck is on our side next week ... because we both know skill alone may not be enough for this one.
Aloha, -Ryan K.
I'll hold down the fort while you're away having fun.....no I'm NOT ALL J--okay, maybe just a little! Go get 'em
Hey xma,
I just love your occupation. Hopefully someday I can have the same
Just finished watching my copy and all I can say is wow! You guys are definitely being too modest. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one!
Good hunting Ryan & Ryan
:campfire:
just finished watching the video
awesome first effort
thanks for keepin it real
kevin
I'm watching Kevin's copy now :D Ryan, you look like you've "matured" since Compton's. Did I detect a little gray in the stubble? On suggestion, get a little more light on your faces. Really like the captions while your shooting at the goats while behind the tree!
talk about fast deliverey, i just ordered mine on the 14th and got it today (17th).
you guys did real good, i really like that rocky lookin countryside, looks perfect for spot and stalk. i'll be waitin for your next one,
Yep, mine came today also and it was awesome!!
I like it already!
Ordered!!
Looks great - just ordered a copy!
DVD en route to Texas. Thanks. Ward
See why the KUIU works so well in that environment.
Who'd have thought you could call in a goat! That was worth the whole price. Must be hard to pick a spot with that blue ocean in the background. Very nice. Get working on your second video. Nice job guys.
I had some time this afternoon so I thought I would watch your DVD again. I think I enjoyed it more the second time. The little mistakes and misses just make it human. I get tired of seeing videos where guys never miss and stalks are never blown. That is so unrealistic it's no wonder guys quit after missing or wounding game. Keep it up and let me know where to send money for video #2.
This is a must have. Well done well put together. You can feel the passion, heart and soul these guys put into this.
Just watched mine after Church today. It came in Fridays mail after placing my order on Tuesday.
Hawaii to Michigan in 4 days. Not bad R&R
Nice film and Loved the location. Great shots put on game and like Randy said, you can feel the passion and dedication R&R have for the hunt and each other. A couple of good friends having a good hunting journey together.
Well Done Guys.
If you have not placed the order yet,do so. It is pretty good stuff.
So, I DID get a chance to see it before Chuck!!! :readit:  :biglaugh:
Order placed!
Can't wait to see it and glad to support you guys , way to go!

My thoughts exactly!!
Thanks all for the kind words!
@ermont : My buddy Grant featured calling in that goat calls in more than just goats. For some reason he has a talent mimicking noises (I'm sure we all know a guy like that haha!) Anyway, I've hunted with him calling in goats, sheep, and turkeys.
@FerretWYO, Two Tracks, Over&Under : Like all of you guys, it really is a passion and a way of life. Never thought filming would be that tough, but when it's about your passion and life, I assume it is easier to catch that genuine feel. We'll never do something that is not "real."
Hope we can deliver on the next project and all these comments fuel that desire. Much Mahalo!
We're still on the island of Lana'i bowhunting axis deer: public hunt, stickbows, spot and stalk, 100% wild. We haven't found where the deer are hiding out yet, but all we can do is wake up again and try again.

Bill
I was a little slow to buy it but just completed it.
Figured while i was at it i would buy 2.
I have always liked and admired your guys short clips. I am very much looking forward to watching this DVD.
Bummer is i leave on a three month trip soon. Probably going to have to wait till i get home.
Congrats Guys
When I get back from Vacation I'll grab one....trailer looks excellent!!
That is one awesome teaser! The soundtrack sure fits the footage and gets the juices flowing. Great job.
Ryan and Ryan,
MAn, I just finished watching your video...for the THIRD TIME...Good Stuff fellas! You definitely got me fired up for hunting your home territory. THANKS GUYS!
What a great video! The scenery and stalking sequences are incredible. The music fits each scene perfectly.
You guys have shown me I need to shoot my bow a whole lot more, great shooting.
Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you once again to everyone. The positive comments from the Gang have been overwhelming. We're just glad that everyone's enjoying it!
Mahalo from Hawaii!
Guys...awesome job. Thank you for taking the time to make this video...
One of my favorite by far.
I love that you keep it simple and you guys laugh through the hard stuff. The way hunting is suppose to be.
Be Blessed,
Ben
Got mine yesterday....but haven't had the time to watch and enjoy it yet.
So I worked a night shift last night, rode my bike home in a snow storm this morning just in time to take my oldest son to school. From there I did some grocery shopping and picked up food to cook a meal at work tonight. I arrived home to get some sleep and prepare for another night shift...BUT...The mailman came,,,, and gues what he had for me.
Needless to say, I'll not be sleeping after watching the video but rather working on my shooting form. "The Ryan show" really made me feel like I can improve on my form.
The vid was a great demonstration of sincere friendships, passion, and drive. The soundtrack was awesome in my opinion and scenery astounding.
Congrats guys on a successful 1st video...can I pre-pay for #2?.....Ryan
Great job guys! I have watched it several times while trying to (uhh hmmm) work. It keeps getting me in trouble with the boss. Great camera work and shooting. Trying to sneak 2 guys in that tight to get video AND a shot is tough. WAY TO GO
Thanks Ben, yeah packing good lunches gets us through the hard times. :D
Thanks for the kind words Ryan. Would love to hunt in your part of the world one day!
Hey Mike, glad you enjoyed the dvd. Yeah being stealthy with camera in tow is tough. Ryan K's good at that though. He snuck us both in on some axis deer this past week.
Aloha and Mahalo!!!
I got my Instinct DVD all the way out to Au.
I really enjoyed the DVD, its refreshing and down to earth, Its portray for me what is being lost by other hunters.
The Fun, the love and passion for the hunt and the animals, the commitment in every aspect before during and after the hunt and the camaraderie between true hunting partners. I like your honest approach I think that is very important.
Looking forward to the things to come
:campfire:
We used to hunt Catalina for those goats and pigs. Some how they all got shot down by helos between 1972 and 1984. Love your hunt
Again more thanks on the feedback!
Roadkill : Hawaii too is also on an ever-increasing eradication of goats, sheep, pigs, and deer. Our increasingly drier years for the last decade or so isn't helping either. It does make many of our public hunts tougher ... but who's not up for a challenge?
Best, -R.Kohatsu
I thoroughly enjoyed watching "Instinct". Your compassion for hunting partners, passion for the hunt, and excitement for the allure of archery hunting was portrayed in vivid detail. Great job. I liked all the candid shots (the expression on Ryan S's face before he arrows the billy silhouetted against the Pacific tells the story of the hunt!), the practice shooting scenes, the definition of "Mana 'o"....great stuff! Capturing some of the best archery footage on your first video is a huge accomplishment- can't wait for more to come!
Ward
So you guys eat lunch often during your hunts :biglaugh: .
Great video, loved it. I used to hunt Spanish goats on Catalina Island when it was open and they are a tough hunt. They will run you up and down a mountain several times a day. Nice job guys keep it up.
Just finished watching it a 2nd time and really appreciated lots of small things.
The backdrop of the ocean and the country itself were real standouts.
Nice seeing someone else make the transition from RH to LH shooting. Keep it up Ryan!
Thanks for a great DVD.
My INSTINCT DVD ships tomorrow and I am really lookin' forward to the action - Hawaiian style!
Keep the wind in your face!
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
WOW! It was *totally* worth the wait to see this DVD!
Ryan & Ryan! You guys did great with this first production. It's A LOT of fun!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
I just finished watchin' it for the second time and I look forward to your future "stick" productions!
Keep up the great work!
Shoot straight, Shinken

Aloha Gang!
Ryan
Ho braddas ono video watched it and went outside shoot for 2 hours awesome video.killa Boar and Billies aloha Ron
Great job guys,
Really enjoyed the video.
LP
Thanks, fellows. I really enjoyed this film. That goat country looks like Australia a lot of the time, except not as hilly (at least where I have roamed). All the best to you as you make the adventures happen for your second production!
Aloha Ron,
That's awesome that it made you want to shoot some arrows!!! Take care and hope to run into you one day on the big island!
Glad you enjoyed it Lance. Thank you!
Hey Ben,
Nice to hear from you! I would love to hunt the goats in your home town one day! Thanks for the kind words but all the credit goes to R. Kohatsu. He was the mastermind behind this project.
Aloha Gang!
RS let me know when your coming back Aloha
I just got back from vacation on the Big Island I was there for a little shy of a month and saw a bunch of goats this year and I keep thinking of taking a bow with me every time I go there. The DVD is ordered and after I watch it I may have to take my bow with me next year.
Just finished watching the DVD for the second time, great job guys! Having seen some of these places and hunted in HI a few times I can tell you it wasn't easy putting this together, my hats of to ya.
Awesome video, I loved it!
Can't wait for the next one. :clapper:
Thanks gang! And yes Doug it was not easy.
FBB: You might want to do that quick! Each year the environmentalists wage a harder war on all game mammals in Hawaii and push toward total eradication.
Got my video from South Cox today.....EXCELLENT    Really neat scenery with the ocean and all....just fantastic!
Is this dvd still available at all? my searches are turning up nothing, and i know Ryan has unplugged temporarily. anyone know how i might get a copy? it does not appear to be available through South's website anymore.
Johnnyk71,
PM me your address and I'll send you my copy of "Instinct" to watch. It's a fun DVD!
