Title: Hunting Unit 86 in Colorado
Post by: Onions on February 13, 2012, 08:32:00 PM
anybody out there have experience hunting this unit?
Seems to have a lot of elk, how about mule deer?
Myself and two buddies are planning on hunting this unit this fall.
Any advice/tips would be fantastic!
thanks

86 is a large unit, as DWT states if you can narrow it down some we may be able to help.
Hunting in most of that unit is rough country.

I saw no fresh sign in Music pass Oct 2011. The Rainbow trail sees heavy foot traffic from hikers and wheelers and you will have to go deep me thinks. I went 5-7 miles deep and never cut a track in a fresh snow. The elk seemed to be either on the private ranch ground or really deep.

I grew up exploring the rainbow pass area on horseback. We would see deer occasionally and bear/bear sign often. I don't know if I ever saw elk in the area though. We were also primarily in the area over the summer months, and I have never hunted it. Good gold medal waters once over music pass though. Tons of sheep in that area as well, good luck with a tag for them:)
