Title: hot glue sticks?
Post by: wixwood on February 13, 2012, 01:16:00 PM
For years I have used hot glue sticks w/ a small tourch to install my field points and broadheads to wood shafts. The best, never fail glue I found was from Martin Archery. Alas, I went to order another supply and they no longer carry this product and could not give me any info on where I might find it. It was a standard looking glue stick but had an amber color to it and, as I said, it never released a point no matter how stuck it was, unlike store bought glue.

What are you folks useing that is along the same lines?

Thanks,      sw

I use a ferrul cement glue stick for fishing rod tips. You can get it at most bait and tackle shops, and even Cabela$ and BPS. works great and unlike that yellow hard stick of melt it doesnt get brittle in cold weather.

I agree, that hard stick stuff was not up to par. The sticks I have been useing are like what goes in a glue gun, about 1/2" in diameter and a foot long and plyable. I gotta think they are still being made/ sold and that Martin was repackaging. I sure would like to find some more of those.

Thanks,     sw

This may be a little sneaky... but I wonder if asking them for an MSDS for the glue sticks would give you any useful information on the source and manufacturer? Many businesses are required to carry and disclose upon request Material Safety Data Sheets for the products they carry.

Just buy industrial strength or heavy duty large glue sticks from a packaging company.

Some of our sponsors sell them by the stick.....I'm sorry but I can't think of who right now...

For the most part...don't get clear ones.
They get brittle in cold temps and aren't as "sticky".

Most glues have a temp range listed on the package.
clear are generally 0˚- a couple hundred ˚.

The amber type is normally good to -50˚

Ahhh, good info. I don't think the MSDS plan will work since they no longer, and haven't for awhile I guess, carry the product. But I will look into the packing co. angle.

Thanks guys!

Harbor Freight carries both kinds of glue sticks. White and amber. I have used both and the amber holds like mad. The white will turn loose if stressed.

When you say the hot melt glue, you are talking about the stuff that is typically found in a craft store and has a gun that is plugged into the wall to heat it up?

I have been using the glue Insert Iron to glue in my inserts for carbon arrows. I am not sure how it would work on a wood arrow but it is heat reversible and holds like well iron.

I use craft type hot glue all the time.  If the surface is prepped, it holds fine.  I do buy the "good" kind and steer away from the cheap stuff.

3 Rivers sells a low heat glue stick. I have been using it for a few years now and never had an insert come out.

I've used the craft type low temp sticks for years and they work fine. I just ordered the glue stick that Big Jim sells to give it a try. We'll see??

I tried WM brand but it cooled quicker than I could seat the BH onto my adaptor. So, I'm in the hunt for something else, too.

We'll thanks for the input folks!

I checked with my local Harbor Freight but they only carry the clear sticks, no ambers, and I have not found any of the clear that will hold up like the amber. Grainger's lists some impressive commercial sticks but they sell in bulk and I would never use up that many so can't justify the expense.

Who is Big Jim? Is he a sponsor on here? How do I find out about his products?

Thanks,     sw

Thank you for the link.
His product looks like one of the HD commercial ones and may be what I want.

The low temp blue glue stick has worked great for inserts on aluminum/carbon but I have found it is almost useless on glue-ons for wood shafts....not sure why but it has not worked for me on wood.

I buy a 6-pack of milky white hot melt sticks at Ace Hardware.  They are 6 inches long I believe.  I have never lost a point.

Thank you all for your input.

I watched the videos, and the Quik Stick is what I use with my wood arrows.  I get it from KK, but it is the same product.  Good stuff.  Remove the plastic sleeve from the stick before heating the glue.
