I bought a copy of "Buckskin and Bone" by Gene Wensel yesterday at the Harrisburg Sportsman Show in Pa. The place was TOO crowded around lunch, so I found a spot to set in for a while and started reading. I took in several more chapters this morning. This may be Mr. Wensel's best work.
This is the most evolved, practical common sense writing I have run across on deer hunting.
But it is also more than that. People who do not hunt would do well to read these thoughts Mr. Wensel shares with us. He says things we know, but haven't found the words for yet.
Put this one on your Christmas now.

Replying to your own post. Kinda like sending yourself a Birthday card. So sad.
Don't feel bad. I once knew a guy who mailed a letter to himself.. :knothead: :D
ct try this click on that pencil and pad thingie above each post (OK click on the one above yours, not someone else's). That allows you to edit that post and you don't need to make a second one unless nobody else makes a post, then go ahead and write another so the first one is not lonely.

Now I know where the twins are today...
Yeah, excellent read. So is "Once Upon a Tine" by Barry...
"Once upon a Tine" will be my next.
Has anyone tried one of their Texas Hog hunts? That may be on the agenda for next year.
And thanks to ChuckC for the how to.
cthorsman- Yes both Gene's and Barry's books are great reads. Gene's "Buckskin and Bone" is more of a tactical book on whitetail hunting and philosophies, while Barry's is a collection of stories he has told many times around campfires that he finally decided to put into print.
If you do a search here on Tradgang on "Pig Gig," I'm sure you will get many responses from folks who have hunted hogs and javalina with the Wensels over the years. Don't pass up an opportunity to go. Mike
Come November is great as well, he has some funny stuff in there as well.
All their stuff is great but I actually still like Gene's first book and Barry's Bowhunting October Whitetails dvd best.
Its killing me! I'm two thirds of the way through "Once Upon a tine." I really don't want it to end.
In the library are: "Come November,""The Best of Traditional Bowhunter®" and "Once Upon a tine." I wish I had bought "Buckskin and Bone" while I was at the PA Outdoor Show. I spoke to Barry and purchased his book. I was even invited to hunt with them at the upcoming Pig Gig. Great writing style, good conversation and yeah they will get more of my money. (:
BTW - Reading these books is helping me look forward to next year's season. I had shoulder surgery two days after I met them on the 6th. Just what the doctor ordered! Come on PT!!! I need to get back to shooting.
Buy the books, they are great.

I went on a Pig Gig last year and am going again this year. Nothing is guaranteed, but the boys look after you. They did the work of finding a decent property to hunt, contacted and made arrangements etc. You just show up and hunt.
You meet some fine folks, get to rub noses with them brothers, and have a great excuse for carrying your bow instead of your briefcase for the week. Can't get much better than that.
Hint. . if you want them to hang around your camp, make extra desserts each night.

I just got (once upon a tine ) can't wait to get into it.
