I made a jig the other night to 4-point foot my shafts and tested it out on some old/broken off cedars. That all went prety well, then I cut some walnut that was in my shop and ran it through the bandsaw to get the foot ready. I then glued up the shaft and pushed it into the foot. I discovered that the glue jouint gets starved, does any one have experienc with footing. The first ones look good but as any first, I want good to be better.

I would love to see pictures of your jig set up Todd. I have done a single foot before (just a long taper and single cut on a bandsaw) and when it came to glue up, I spread the wood and allowed the glue to flow to the bottom then inserted my shaft. I then hand planed them into shafts. It was a PITA, that is why I want to see someone's active set-up, hopefully using power tools.
Mike, I took some pics with the idea of a how- to, I will put one together and post it this week. I was thinking the same as you with gluing the foot instead of the shaft. I'll try that. I also want to find a bandsaw blade with a wider kerf to help the two mate better. Can you send me the name of the product we spoke about at kzoo. I looked into a reflective product but haven't tried one yet. The glower wouldn't work well for night calling preditors.

Mikes right let the glue flow down the footing and I put it on both pieces to be glued and never had a problem.I haven't done it in a while but think I'll start some for next season

i purchased a jig that cut via bandsaw and it didn't work real well for me.
i think the idea of starting with your square, billets, cutting and gluing your footing and then plane the shaft round is the better way to go...however...it is labor intensive and very time consuming. unless, of course, you can afford, or have a shaft shooter or a dowel cutter. (I have the dowel cutter but it's in 3/8"...the smallest i could locate. if there is a 5/16" available i don't know where to find.)
I remember seeing on here how someone adapted their dowel cutter or shaft shooter from 3/8 to a smaller size. You might try a search.
