I was talking to a arrow smith the other day an I asked what spine of wood arrows he shot an he told me he shot aluminum arrows I was shocked. here this man breaks down trees an makes great wood arrows an dont even shoot'em.witch is fine with me it just caught me a little off guard.I was wondering how many bowyers shoot another bowyers bow.Iam talking calling the guy up an ordering a custom bow from him.also have you ever made a deal as to were you guys ever make each other bows an just swap.there is nothing wrong with any of this.you guys are in the business because you love it an your all darn good at it.I would thing you all are bow junkies just like the rest of us thanks ED
Pretty neat question should make for some interesting reads.
Dont know if any will admit to it though!
If you look down the page you will see Kirk just got a Eaglewing from Sixby and I think Sixby already got a bow from Kirk both are top notch Bowyers.
You know it must be an honor to get a build request from a top notch bowyer. Come on guys, chime in!!
I shot one of keenan howards bow this past deer season instead of one of mine.
Theres a confession,who's next?
I have several bows by other bowyers, snubnose by Trux, Osage longbow by ScottM, one piece recurve by Kingfisher30, t/d longbow by Bobmiester. I love and shoot all of the bows above all the time. Also have a RER 56" vortex.
The bows that I build the most of are not exact copies but patterned off of the Rocky Mountain Recurve which are no longer being built.

Way to go Dave, you are obviously very confident in your own work to be the first to break the ice. Commendable sir!
If I were a bowyer, I'd have one of every bow going to possibly compare my own work to.
David can't blame you there I'd love to have one of Keenan's bows. :archer2:
I dont have any others right now but since I dont build recurves its fun to shoot them sometimes, they usually dont stay long though. I owned a Predator Recurve and a Morrison Cheyenne for awhile, both were great shooting bows and I wish I would have kept the Morrison. Someday if I have the spare cash I may get another one, mine was "A" riser "B" limbs, I want to try a B&B combo.
How many buy a bow so they can "reproduce" the design? Or at least "incorporate" some ideas into their own?
I know Steve Turay of Northern Mist killed a nice doe a couple years ago with a Great Northern LB. He also has a Shrew Hill on order.

I have about 20 bows in my collection (mostly all natural bows) that are from bowyers that I have great respect for. In most cases we did a trade and they have one of mine.
I have never hunted with any of them and have shot them sparingly. They mean more to me as an example of their art.
Mike
Wouldn't bother me at all.
God bless you all, Steve
This just proves that most people (Bowyers and the like) in the traditional community are a rare breed. I think its a cool thing that some if not all are willing to shoot others bows. I respect them that much more!
Very Cool! Jason
Mind you I am a novice, but BrainO sent me a long bow this past season in the trade bow. Its a darn nice long bow and I like shooting it. Do I wanna hunting with a bow that I made...sure. But I have no issue with hunting with this bow either. IMO a nice bow is a nice bow...shoot it!
In the past I have been offered some might fine bows by other bowyers in trade for one of my osage self bows. I turned down the trades because I knew I wouldn't shoot them, they would only be dust collectors, fine bows are made to be shot.
I make my own line but I enjoy shooting my osage selfbow made by DVSHunter, and If I had the money I'd get a bow from Ed Scott. I also enjoy shooting Predator recurves.
I'll confess I own shoot and hunt with other bowyers bows sometimes. I do have a few go to bows that I built but somedays other bowyers bows get their ticket punched. I respect others work as it is truly a work of art. Others I have are jack Kempf, wingnut, bob sarrels, big Jim just to name a few.

I build all natural lam bows and self bows. I always try to have one of my own for season and I also hunt with a Striker and a few other all wood bows made by other folks.
I just like to be in the woods with a bow and I grab what ever I'm in the mood for on any given day and go to woods.
Last year Greg in Mallad and I made a bow swap, Greg makes some awsome bows, I would be foolish not to shoot it. I hunted with it last year.
I have plenty of my own that I like too but I think its a good idea to shoot other peoples bows.... you never know you could learn somthing.

I have two of Tim Mieggs bows. One recurve and one longbow.Only shoot and hunt with my own.I shoot a long draw(31") not all bow designs fit me well at that draw.If I wasn't a bowyer I know a few I could shoot just fine,Fox archery ".High Sierra",Tim's Du-o-Flex longbow.Shot one of George's Rainyday bows the other day and could shoot it fine too.Wouldn't mind having a collection of all the bowyer buddies I know bows.
I have held many nice bows built by others and I own over 100 used bows for resale but don't even have time to shoot mine much less any others.
I keep my eyes open hoping to find an old super Kodiak in the 70+lb range just for the fun of it.
I am also fond of the Black Widow PLX. I still have the last one they made for me. Honestly haven't shot too many others.
Oddly enough, everytime I build myself a new bow, someone wants to buy it even though they are all about 80+lb at my draw. Since every bow has a price, this means I never have to shoot an old one.
