In the further tuning of my Browning Explorer II, I noticed that there was some loud string slap during my practice sessions. I remembered having some Moleskin from my military first aide kit and put some on the string grooves. This sure did make a difference in quieting down my bow. No further steps needed. She is good to go for the sound department.

I had a short 'love affair' with mole skin to dampen string slap too....but found that over a short time it lost its effectiveness and was a pain to remove all the goo left behind trying to replace it.
That lead me to develop BowHush.
I still use mole skin for a number of things, but not on my bows anymore.
Sounds like I better take it off then. Can't stand residue on my bow limbs. Thanks for the info Terry!
Yeah...and I sure didn't want to use anything that would damage the finish trying to remove it.....that was another concern.
Not sure about other environments, but here in the south I think the heat 'cured it' to the bow.
Send me your address and I'll send you a free set!!!
been using it for 20 yrs as rest and side plate material. Never had a problem w/ it or removing and replacing it.
Wow, thanks very much Terry! Address sent via email.
PD....it really didn't last long as a rest and strike plate for me ....maybe I shoot too much....but I tried it cause velcro is sometimes loud with some arrow shaft materials on those 'pin drop' days.
It was quiet on the draw when I used it....but just didn't last long at all .....try and use calf hair on all mine now, quiet and durable. Sealskin didn't even last that long.
I would like to hear about other rest/strike plate materials that are also quiet and DURABLE for sure.
I was polying up some shafts with some lambs wool(for hardwood floor urethane)and it has a leather back and a thick nap. I was wondering if the nap was clipped down would it work for a rest material. Anyone ever try it?
Well, Terry was right. In just the short time it was on the bow, it left a nasty residue to get off! Won't be using that again!!! :banghead:

Well, I do have alot of bows so maybe each one doesn't get shot enough,LOL.

Yep.....just be glad it didn't CURE!!!... :campfire:
Not wool but acrylic carpet has held up well for shelf material and leather has always held up the longest.
Thanks again Terry! I just got through scrubbing that residue off and it was definitely a chore. Can't even imagine if it cured on!
I like the rough side of thin leather. Hold it on with two sided fiberglass carpet tape.
(T.W. you should have kept that stinger, it was sort of quiet by recurve standards)
Mike, I would dearly have loved to kept that recurve. Unfortunately, with my bad shoulder, it got to where I couldn't shoot 50# or more anymore. I've dropped down to 40# - 45# bows now.
And yes, it was one of the quietest recurves I've shot before putting anything on the string! If I could afford it, I'd have another one on order in a heart beat. :D
Terry,
That is so generous. You are THE MAN.
Joe
Terry so far I have had good results with mink leg fur rests. I got mine from Jeremy. He trims them down. Very quiet and so far durable.
I certainly haven't experienced all the different bow finishes used, but a little Goo Gone or some lighter fluid on a soft piece of paper towel or rag and it wipes right off and hasn't hurt any of my bow finishes. My mother-in-law, an RN, said they used it (lighter fluid) for cleaning wounds in the war, followed by an alcohol wipe. FWIW :)
I'm with you on the bow hush, though. Lasts as long as the string and made a HUGE difference quieting my recurve.
Terry, that is a great offer! I like the calf hair rest and strike plate as well, but they didn't last but about a year for me. ( I shoot ALOT). I started using some old belt leather I had laying around. It has worked great for me so far. It is very quiet and doesn't seem like it will ever wear out. I just sand mine or carefully shave it down to 1/16" thick for both the strike plate and rest.
I have used mineral spirits on quite a few bows to remove that goo.
No ill effects to report.
I've always liked the brand name Bear hair rest.
Quiet, cheap, seems to last...
Never cared for velcro..just not soft enough to be quiet.

Bow Hush is the best I've found to silence string slap. Easy to apply as well.
WD40
X2 WD40
I would third wd40 and suspect "remoil" and other petroleum distillate-based lubricants on a paper towel will remove the adhesive residue in short order. I don't know of a bow finish they would harm and a good rubbing with a dry paper towel is clean-up.
I find that the self adhesive felt in HD and other stores is the easiest and quietest way to fab up adjustable rests and side plates. You can shape it with a sharp knife and its slightly spongy and quiet. I use it on metal ILF risers, lets you tune an off the shelf system, where there is no radius on the shelf or side plate.

Been there, done that a long time ago. Lesson learned, "never again".

I'm with JimB
I take wieght off bows for people all the time, if you ever have a problem with it let me know. (BUT... it's not reversable.)
i had string slap on both of my bob lees.one i got a sbd string slap was gon the other bow i put on a set of brush buttons stringslap was gone
How about the carpet side of velcro seems to last longer than moleskin.
You know I was shooting tonight, and looking at the velcro on my limbs...folded up curling in the corners. NOT a good look! I think its time to try bow hush that looks like the ticket!
