X2 with hitman. Welcome!
Thanks guys. Hitman I did read that and most anything ese for new archers on the net that I could find. I haven't chosen my bow yet because all the shops i can find locally stock almost exclusively compounds! So I haven't been able to handle anybows or get any first hand advice. I know i would like a take down recurve and that my budget is about 300 for the bow + 200 for accessories. I know I'd be best off with a 60-62' 45# bow (my draw lenth is 27'), carbon arrows, a modern string, a tab or glove, a wrist gaurd, and alot of practice. I have no idea whether or not I need a shelf or how to choose the right arrows or how to tune the bow once I get it. I could use some advice on brands of bows and especially some good books on the subject that are pretty beginner friendly. this will be a hunting bow not interested in target shooting except as practice. there ya go you asked for it!
Welcome!!!! Go to a 3D shoot (trad only if you can find one in your area) and get your hands on a lot of different bows so you can decide what you like. Most any trad archer will let you shoot his bow if you just ask at the practice range.

Hello from Missouri, you will learn a ton. EMT? Medic here
I would recommend a couple books:
"Beginner's Guide to Traditional Archery" by Brian J. Sorrells.
"The Traditional Bowhunter's Handbook" by T.J. Conrads.
When you make up your mind on what kind of bow to purchase be sure to check out the tradgang classifieds. You can find a good used bow for the money.
Welcome, what part of Missouri?
Eric
Hey Eric, I worked for Meramec Ambulance for a couple years. Spent many of hours in Pacific at station 1
medic now but it's a handle I've used for years. I work for Abbott in STL. I live in New Haven, MO about 60 miles west of STL.
Ha, I work for Joachim Plattin Ambulance District (JPAD) in Jefferson County area. I'm sure you make it to my neck of the woods every once in a while for those good ol transfers
As books goes, I really liked the one by G Fred Asbell, And I think you should find a club, there is always some trad shooters there and you can ask question and try bows.... Have a look at the classified, you will find a bunch of great bows for around that budget!!
have fun and welcome
Hi from Mexico!
Welcome to tradgang, I love this site and I'm sure you're going to love it too.
Welcome aboard, enjoy the ride. All great fun to learn. Some good advice already given by some of the other members. Try to shoot a few bows, will save you a lot of time and money.
The United Bowhunters of missouri are having a 3 day get together on Feb.3-5 in Jefferson City.
They have vendors, speakers, a banquet all laid out. It will be a good chance to be exposed to lots of gear and info. My wife and I are planning to go up from West Tennessee. It will be our first trip there, but everything sounds like a great meeting.

Jake, we sure hope to see you this weekend at the UBM Festival. That's the first event I attended when I got into traditional archery and I couldn't have picked a better place! If you like hanging out with great folks and talking about bowhunting, then that's the place to be. Contact me if you need more information.
