I'd been looking at Filson's single Mackinaw for a few years now for a bowhunting, outdoors, everything coat.
Was at the local Orvis yesterday and they had the single Mack's on sale for 199. That was a good price for new, so I went ahead and bought one in Forest Green.
I have a few other Filson items and this one isn't any different. Top notch. The cut is also trim enough that it should make a fine bowhunting jacket next fall/winter.
Just passing along the info. on the sale in case anyone was interested.
I'm actually wearing mine today. Best wool coat I've ever owned, and I'm planning on being buried in it.
Filson is the best.
Can't beat Filson
I wear my Mackinaw vest just about everyday and Wool crusher to match. Cant beat em. The jacket is next.
I have a couple vests that are great. They look like they will last a lifetime. I have been looking at those Mackinaw coats for a while, too. Maybe next year...
I got a used one off the classifieds on here for a good price and couldn't be happier. A little stiffer than some others I have, but the quality can't be beat.
I've got a bunch of Filson, heirloom quality.
I'm getting an otter cloth something next . I was in a used clothing store in the Fall and found a zip-in wool vest, like new condition for $4.00! $120.00 value. Gotta get a coat to go with that unit.
I have the double Mackinaw in forest green. I have taken several deer while wearing this coat including my best deer ever. I guess it blends in better than I thought it would. If you wear out one of their wool garmets, you have done something.
Great coats. I am wearing my black double mackinaw today
When we decided to move to Northern BC my wife asked me what I wanted for a winter coat. I picked out a charcol Filson Weekender. With the right layering I wear it all year long. Had windchills to minus 38 celsius a few weeks back and I wouldn't have traded my Filson for anything.
What is the difference in mackinaw and a double mackinaw?
double has an extra cape over the shoulders and upper chest along with doule layer sleeves
I have the Cruiser. Wicked nice coat w/super thick, tough wool.
I love my single Mac. I wear on the worksite if there's no heat. All those pockets come in handy!
Last year one day I was wearing my doble mac camo, my Filson pants, Filson long johns, Filson wool shirt, my Filson vest and my mukluks from Ely,MN. I thought I would lay back and take the weight off my feet for a spell and I fell asleep. Two hours later the sun was shining in my eyes and I got up to home to get some lunch. I didn't even melt the snow I was laying on.
Always wondered, does a double mackinaw pull tight through the shoulders on full draw? I've seen them and love the double cape...but wondered if it posed a problem with the archers "not normal" shooting position of full draw with elbow high....
From what I'm reading so far...no problem at all?
I have the double mack in a muted plaid green. Love it, absolutley the best coat I've ever owned.
I can shoot with it on and don't feel any binding at all.

it is on my list of things to buy! I have a lot of Filson stuff, and just love it!!
I have a Filson vest in black and grey plaid along with a pair of mack pants. The vest is 20 years old and absolutely looks like new yet. The pants are only a couple of years old, but I expect the same out of them that the vest is giving me. Great stuff.
Filson is not cheap, but it sure is good stuff. I have several vests and will be buying a mack this fall. I have several "lesser" wool mack wanna be's and I can't seem to wear them out enough to justify a new one, so I guess I need to just bite the bullet.
I have been looking at that double, but frankly, I am not certain I would be able to wear that thing unless I was visiting the arctic circle in January. Was almost there a few years ago,(Oulu Finland)in January. . . a might chilly for sure.

I have had the same coat for 15 years and love it. It looks as good today as the day I bought it.
I love all of my Filson gear. I've got a Mackinaw vest and it's my favorite piece of clothing. I haven't got a Filson Mackinaw coat yet, but it's on my wish list.
I am always surprised by the wide comfort span, temperature wise the double mack has. How can something that comfortable at 40 degrees be warm at zero? However, my camo Fison with the wool ljs, wool shirt, wool vest, plus mac gets possitively intolerable when I put that Norwegian shrunken wool sweater with it. It has to be below ten degrees to add the sweater. I bought mine large enough so that a sweater could go on the inside and still allow movement. They are quite adjustable with the inner sleeve length to a point. That is one can clip the stitching and pull the inner sleeve up, but there is a point where it causes a folding above the tack stitching. Since I am wide in the shoulders and short on the arms, I had a seamstress shorten the inner sleeve at the cuff and retack the inner sleeve, it fits me perfect now. I like how the back game pouch holds all of my stuff, no need for a man purse.
A while back I had to fight to get my coat back. The lady that use to manage the local gas and puke, put it on and wouldn't take it off. She always thought that I was the fanciest dresser that came in there, when she managed it the food was great, I was wearing my Fison pants, shirt and brown wool vest combos, no coat. She thought that I was crazy for dressing up just to go hunting. The other day she saw the whole ensemble and wanted to try on my coat, now she is a pretty lady, but I just couldn't let her make love to my coat the way she was going on about it. she has one that fits her for herself now and she came by to show me how it looked on her. I have been trying to get my wife to get a Filson for years, she will have no part them.
I have several Filson garments including the Macinaw which now resides on my sons shoulders in Hopewell, NJ just too heavy for here. I use the jacket liner coat and jacket liner vest and can layer them over smart wool and Filson under garments. I went to pick up a belt before Christmas and was told that Filson had been sold to a California based operation. My son has worn out two of the old Filson briefcase/computer bags and the hardware on the new ones is pretty cheap looking. The buckles appear to be plated with brass instead of solid brass. I suspect the buckle on the belt I bought is plated brass.
According to the guy in the store prices went up 20% after the buy out.
Just check out the new Filson very carefully we may be seeing the death of a quality product.
I have one also. My only problem is that I get too warm sometimes wearing them. I guess that is a good thing though.
I have a pile of Filson. I wear a wool vest every day. I think the wool vest actually saved my life. I got kicked shoeing a horse for hunting. I had lacerated liver but the doctors could not believe it was worse. The vest never ripped and the horse was sharp shoed. By all means I should have been dead. But I think that vest helped.
I have been wanting one for years but haven't been able to afford one yet (coat or double mackinaw). If any one has a size medium they would ever consider parting with and trading for, I have it on my wish list. I have a bow or some artwork I do for bartiering.
TSchirm, keep an eye on the classifieds...they pop up now and then for some great prices.
Thanks Wooddamon, but unfortunately right now it is trade or can' do it due to some financial challenges.
Wish they made the mac in plaid patterns. Only way it could be better!
I bought a Yukon Cape in green plaid and Im loving it. Very good camo. Got a double mac, 2 vests and a mess of hats. Love the brand.
When I was their supervisor I bought all my officers Tin Cloth Packer Coats for their back-country pack trips. I had one for myself but gave it to a younger officer who came into the area a couple years later. These work coats were life savers; especially when the rain-snow-wind started when you were on a horse at high elevations. When I first got mine I thought it was just too hard so I tried to soften it up some. Friends - never put a wax coat in the drier!! Wife was p-o'd at me for a looong time! I had a Mac Cruiser that I gave to another officer (I lost 50-pounds and it didn't fit any longer). I still have a couple vests (brown and red/black) that I absolutely love, a Cover Cloth Field Coat (for sale, it just doesn't rain enough here to wear), a couple hats, a belt, Outfitter Sweater, Fly fishing strap vest and a Wading Jacket (also for sale - again, lost 50 pounds!). I love Filson products...my next purchase will be a Dbl. Mac.
Now I am disappointed, they don't offer the camo double mac, or anything in the camo anymore. I was hoping that it was a seasonal specialty thing that I have not seen it, but now they don't have camo at any time. I was planning on buying a lighter camo jacket, when my Swanndri camo was shot, now I am going have to bring my Swanni to the coat doctor to get the edges of the sleeves fixed.
I think the grey plaid would be just as good or better than the camo. I have the camo and it is a very small pattern. I think the grey plaid would break you up a lot better.
Here is the newest plaid that Filson offers. Better than any commercial camo in my opinion. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/DSCN2474-1.jpg)
I totally agree with the quality and versatility of Filson wool garments. My red/black vest is probably my favorite piece of outdoor clothing.
