Hi all...had to share the beginning of my Tall Tines project.
Dropped these boards off at Brian's booth Saturday...can't wait to see what he does with them. We have some amazing Osage on our property and he said he would make a bow from it if I was able to get the wood to him. The left board is heavy to say the least...they're both over 2" thick and close to 33" to 36" long.

Tried to play with the color but I don't have photoshop...but I think this photo shows more of the grain that the boards actually have.

Going to be a 3-piece 64" longbow...osage veneers with an Osage flare in the riser.
Should look awesome!
Josh
That will look good!
I think it's gonna look ugly and you should send it far far away to Canada when it's done! I'll discard of it so no-one can ever make fun of such a horrid bow! I won't even charge you for the service!
What is the rest of the riser going to be Josh? Some Cocobolo or even Phenolic would be my pick. I hope he cuts a few extra veneers from that chunk!
Lovely Osage,I think it will match very well with a dark wood,my choice will be Macassar,Ziricote or Ebony, but a dark Cocobolo will make it fantastic too!
I left the rest of the riser up to Brian...going to be a surprise.
I agree with others though...Macassar, Chechen, Cocobolo are great choices. I love knarly looking Bacote also.
Can't wait to see what he comes up with!
Josh
BEAUTIFUL!!!
I love Osage........Cocobolo would be my choice to pair that up with. But almost anything dark to provide contrast will be excellent. Don't forget to show us the result.
I seen them there chunks of hedge on Sat. and there BIG
Sould be a good lookin bow
Josh no matter the choice should be awesome.
Great character wood. Now THAT should be interesting. Glad you got an unobstructed photo of the new booth banner I did for Brian. Every time I tried to take a photo of it someone was fondling the bows in the booth, HA.
Osage is my favorite bow wood. Can't wait to see what these will yield!

Cool Josh! The wood choices recommened "wood" be great contrasts.
But, how about keeping it "made in America" and use some Black Walnut? Maybe ya have some on your property, too! Just my thought!
Great looking wood Josh. Can't wait to see the finished bow.
Bill
some of the absolute prettiest bows i have seen were from the osage that came off Josh's property. Josh, you already have osage/bocote combo, right? i think id go osage with some phenolic in the riser and a black beaver tail grip. twist up a black/yellow string and you got yourself a bad a$$ bow. looking forward to seeing this one!

That could cause an international incident :biglaugh:
Best send it to VA so we can keep Canada on the friendly list.
BEAUTIFUL OSAGE! I also like that picture on that talltines banner.
Don't think you could have picked better pieces....that is going to make one heck of a nice looking bow!
I can't wait to see the finished product, it will be a looker!
I say with wood that pretty, 100% Osage!
I like the character in the osage.
I was in Brian's hometown several years ago. I drove by a local livestock acution and they had SEMI TRUCK loads of osage just like that for sale for fenceposts. I found nothing I liked for staves (straight and clear) but stuff like that to last a bowyer ten lifetimes.
Can't wait for him to cut some veneers...the grain goes all over the place and looks curly in spots and burly in others. Hopefully these boards will live up to what I've seen in the past!
Should be interesting!
Thanks,
Josh
Bow is being shipped today!
Can't wait to get it and do some shooting.
Thanks,
Josh
I want pics gotta be a looker for sure!!

I love Osage! That will be very sweet indeed.

I've always wanted to do an Ebony and Osage TallTines, kind of an Iowa Hawkeye version. The suspense is killing me...no hints or nuthin' Josh?
This should be good !

Bow showed up yet ? :archer2:
very nice!
Any pics of the finished bow :dunno:
I bet it is a looker
All,
Bow showed at about 2:05 PM today...just as I was about to jump in the shower for work. Put it together and just admired it for a couple of minutes...simply awesome! I only had about 7 minutes to look it over. 64" 3-piece longbow...55 @ 29", going to be a great bow! Still trying to come up with a name for it.
No time to take pictures but the Osage limbs have amazing grain...curly in spots, almost translucent. The riser is brownish-orange Cocobolo with an Osage vertical line. The checkering on the grip is amazing in the hand...first bow I've ever had with this feature, love it. Bow just has great balance!
Will make a string for it tonight (I like to see a bow in person before I make a string to match the colors) and take some good photo's tomorrow.
Sorry for the wait...but I've learned a few things about telling a story on this site in the last few years. :goldtooth:
Thanks,
Josh
We need pictures of this bow every six months so that we can follow how the osage is aging. :)
Sure its sweet thxs for keeping us posted!!
That's just wrong :biglaugh:
I bet it is a beauty! My 64" Talltines is my all time favorite. It may be time for another!
Had me all fired up. Guess we gotta wait.
John
I am looking forward to seeing it in person and shooting it!
I can not get Photobucket to work...I have resized the photo's but when I preview the post they're way to big.
I've never had this much trouble with photos!!!
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Josh
Thanks Randy and Michael...hope this works!
Brian did an awesome job with the Osage I gave him! The grain in the limbs is amazing...I will take better photo's when we have some sun.

Sweet stick there ..if she shoots as good as she looks...LOOK OUT WILDLIFE!!
Beautiful bow! Is it all Osage? Or is the riser a different wood?

The riser is Cocobolo with a Osage vertical stripe with spacers.
It's a great piece of Coco also!
Thanks,
Josh

Yes, Brian does his own checkering, I have watched him do it. The guy can pretty much do anything he sets his mind to, and do it well.
Josh, that bow will be a great heirloom from the family farm
Nice!! Looks like a keeper Josh.
John
I am not a Hedgeapple fan but that is the best looking I've seen. Will be really pretty in a few years once it darkens a bit.
Awesome Josh
