Title: Brace height?Help!
Post by: chanumpa on January 29, 2012, 03:31:00 PM
I just got my first SBD skinny string(8 strand) for my ol Bob Lee Thunderbolt.I measured everything the way they said, got the string, strung it up,and had9.5 brace height first. So,I unstrung, unwound the string as much as I thought I could, restrung, and still got 9".With my old string I always ran it about 8".I shot a couple of arrows through it and they seemed fine, but then got cold feet.I would guess that I would still get about a quarter inch stretch after it would get shot in but this seems like it would still be too much brace height.Im thinking that I screwed up and had this made too short. My old, shot in b50 string measures 57+5/8ths,My new SBD is58".This is a 62" 57@28" bow.Any ideas?

The string should be fine. I use the minus 4" for Recurve and minus 3" for Longbows. It will take a little shooting to get it shot in. The SBD string is a high performance string with little stretch, so give it some time. And as long as the Bob Lee is shooting good and quiet I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Rob,Its shooting quiet and fast,it just seemed weird to have it brace @9+1/8th instead of 8+1/8th.I guess its time to put a nock on her and put a couple of hundred shots through her.

Did you measure your old string on the bow strung or did you take it off to measure? I always measure strung as the string can contract quite a bit once you unstring it.

I measured them off the bow, hooked around a nail.I think thats how they said to do it.I still dont get how I get an inch more brace height with a string thats a half inch longer.

Shoot it for 30-60 minutes straight, leave it fully strung for the night and by tomorrow morning, the string will have stretched. Then, measure the brace height.

I'm guessing the brace height will be lower this time.

Sounds good Nightwing. To answer Prarie Drifter, yes the old one was B50.I just took it up to a local sporting goods store and shot the old string first through their chrono with a friend standing behind me.The SBD was consistantly 9 to 10 feet per second faster than the b50 string ,however neither of us could tell any noise differance.Kind of surprizing. The B50 string did have way more string silencing stuff on it though. The SBD had a minimal swatch of catwhiskers only.

My guess is that the B-50 took up quite a bit when removed and gave you an inaccurate measurement. I have seen B-50 stretch over an inch sometimes. I think you may have to get another string. The SBD strings won't stretch that much. At least my ten string haven't.

String up the bow w/ the old string and get it to the correct brace height. Than take a soft tape measure and measure the string on the bow.

I agree with PD.  Your new string isn't going to stretch enough to drop an inch of brace height.  If you want to shoot your bow at your  8-inch brace height, you'll need a longer string.  Skinny low-stretch strings aren't as adjustable as thicker dacron strings.  Takes a whole bunch of twists to lengthen or shorten them.  They need to be very close to exact length needed from the start.

Sounds good guys.I think Ill try this one on my Hatfield as it has a F.F string on it ,and then order a new one for the ol Thunderbolt 1" longer. Thanks all for helping me out on this head scratcher.
