So I am not a big user of "big chain" attractant scents but I do use some during pre-rut. A local sporting goods chain has all scent and scent control on clearance for next to nothing. Bought enough clothes wash, unscented shampoo/soap and unscented deoderant to last me 3-4 seasons for less than $20.
I hesitated to buy any attractant scents till I could ask about storage during the off season. I mean I know the stuff you buy is not fresh anyway so what does everyone think? Is it worth it to buy commercial attractant scents if you can get it at pennies on the dollar?
If I do buy some of this stuff for cheap, what would be the best way to store it in the off season? Cool and dark storage? Freeze it? Other?
Just don't want to waste the money.
Thanks all!
Cool and dark.I keep Tink's from year to year, I just put it one of my rubber maid bins in the basement.I've had bucks come in to it a year after it was bought, so it must still smell OK to them.
I just seal mine up in a ziploc freezer bag and keep it all in the crisper of our refrigerator. I've been doing it for years. Actually I believe that some of it gets better with age, provided you keep it cool and as dark as possible.

Keep all my James Valley in a small fridge down in the shop.
yup in the frig will do the trick
I use only the urine I extract from kills(buck and doe)I keep them frozen in the freezer, they stay strong(just leave room for expansion). Cover scent I make from boiled pine needles are kept in the freezer as well, but they get sodium fluoride added to help preserve them.

I was thinking about freezing myself. (I can get away with freezing in our big freezer, but the crisper drawer thing didn't get far with the wife!) If in plastic bottles that can expand without rupturing, this would be ideal but wasn't sure if that would cause some sort of chemical breakdown that would reduce the effectiveness. I guess no?
At worst the synthetic stuff(what most are) will just freeze the water crystals. then when thawed it will reconstitute. if left out I found they will break down(after being open) and mold/bacteria will destroy them.
In the frig.
Steve, I also am a die hard hock pad guy(stop and get them from road kills also) and I keep them frozen from year to year with no negative results.
