Title: For Those of us NOT at KZOO this weekend...
Post by: YORNOC on January 28, 2012, 04:52:00 PM
Whats everyone up to? Wish I was there...but I'm not. So while there are threads going of Kzoo, lets talk about what we are doing while wishing we could be there.
I have an awesome Brackenbury Shadow I'm starting on. 51#@28",62" bow. Gray actionwood riser with bubinga stripes and accents. I was told this was one of the last bows Jim took the order for before he passed on. He was a great guy, I shot with him a few times Going to make up some antler burr knobs and skin it up with either rattlesnake or copperheads. Not too sure of copperheads over gray actionwood, its kinda dark....but these copperheads have great color and may pull it off..I'll work with it a bit.

What are you trads doing?

I took a stump shooting hike in the Arizona desert this morning.  Just me, my Big Jim TC, and the quiet of the Sonoran desert. There are worse things to do than that.

The old Bracks are nice. My first custom was Legend Wes built after Jim's death. I have a friend with a brown shadow that arrived the week Jim died.

I spent the morning shooting my longbow.

Sitting in a stand for one last time this season. We wind it up on the 31st. Debating now if I want to take a doe (given the opportunity arises) or just go home, give thanks for a good season and get some rest!

Well I did get some woodys stained this AM.While in the shop I went ahead and built two 24' long counter tops for a job I am starting on Monday.Making money helps keep the the thought of not being in K-zoo managable.I keep telling myself that I can use the traveling money to by a new bow.Going up there from Tx is expensive.I will wait and hear what every one thinks of the new bows to make a choice. Its not all bad I did get 2 widows and 2 BigJim Buffs in the last year.

Getting ready to start sanding on an old Pearson Cougar so I can make it pretty again for a buddy that wants to shoot/hunt with me out here in CO. I'm also straightening some laminated birch shafts to whip up some arrows for it. My girl actually went today and says she picked me up some cool goodies but she won't say what they are...

I'll have to wait and see in a couple weeks when she's here for a visit.

Oh yeah, and checkin' out the Gang!

I pulled a couple of ladder stands today before they grow legs. I left them up longer than I wanted to, kinda surprised that they were still there. They are a pain to move no wonder why nobody stole them.

Where are ya from Glen?  I'm from Bellingham, just over the RI border.
I hear you, I have to get in and pull quite a few stands. Not a "LOT" of respect for fellow hunters here in eastern Mass.  A shame...but hopefully most will "grow up" and learn the hunter's ways.  Too many people, too little space around here unfortunately.

Just sunk a few arrows in my indoor target (8 yrds).  Working up a dozen arrows, trying Beman MFX Classics.  I went with Onestringer wraps and double doggs instead of dipping for now.  The fancy stuff has to wait until I can dip or spray outside, unfortunately that will be a while.  Three white 4" shield feathers providing the control.  First one out of the Bitz looks pretty good.

Life on the Minnesota prairie in the winter...what did they do before the internet and satellite TV?

Flung a few arrows this mornin at the indoor target, took the son in law to the gym this afternoon.  he needs to keep from gaining weight, so he won't lose the fine opportunity he got yesterday.  oh, i didn't say what that was.  He joined the Navy yesterday, has always been his dream, he knows that it'll support his wife, and my #1 grandson, and also knows that his wife is very used to the Navy life, her being a Navy brat and all.....  oh, did i mention i'm proud of his decision??     :)

edit:  also trying to figure out where i can get my hands on a bear takedown riser to test the grip...  tried the grizzly they had at gander mountain, grip is alot smaller/thinner than the '66 bear alaskan i use now.     :(

I went last year, but couldn't make it this year. I SNOWBLEW the driveway this morning, then made up a few arrows, then SNOWBLEW the driveway again.  :help:  Probably going to have to SNOWBLOW the driveway in the morning before I head out to the indoor range to do a little practice and see some of the archery gang. Their calling for SNOW for the next few days so I'll be buisy SNOWBLOWING the driveway  :banghead:  I've got a 4foot blower on my ATV (4-wheeler) with an enclosed cab, so I guess it isn't so bad eh!,...Lloyd

I've never been to any kind of trad archery expo, but sometime I'd like to be stateside when one rolls around.

I hope someone posts some pics.  I enjoy seeing all the displays, bows, bows, and more bows.  Looks like a great place.

Cut a 16' Tandem trailer of fire wood yesterday.  Had a giant dead Hickory down below the house that was looking like a widow maker.  Had to fall it which was a trick as the split was 5' off the ground.  I split the whole trailer w/ a maul and didn't do my P90x yesterday.....I just called it even.
Outdoor woodfurnace is eating that hickory already this morning and house is a nice 71 deg.

Fighiting off a sinus infection so I can make a 1-day meeting in the Denver, CO airport on Tuesday -- Killer day but I prefer 1-day trips that don't require hotel stays when I can swing it. I'll travel 20 hours for a 3.5 hour meeting.

Hi david, I'm in western MA, just north of Springfield. I've had a bunch of hunting stuff stolen over the years so much so that I am really going to reevaluate my hunting methods before next season. I may not even deer hunt. Might just hunt turkeys and small game this year, we will see?

Kildeer, I read a post on the K'zoo thread. Someone was watching you shoot a 64#'er. I bought (paid for and picked up) a nice 47# Centaur that was in the classifieds. But that was on my way to the Expo. I was looking at a 54" Super Shrew. Came back to take another look at it and someone had it out shooting. I picked up the 65# duplicate and, just for grins and chuckles, tried to draw it. Got it about 27 1/2" toward my 29.5 and it would not come back any farther. Got home Sat. night and strung up my Centaur. I was really anxious to shoot it. Drew it about 3 - 4 " and it felt like I ripped my whole shoulder apart. Serves me right for trying to play Macho Man, but my hat's sure off to you!

David Yukon, They're a bunch of fun to make. Hardest thing is getting the Northern White Cedar for planks and ribs. Ya know the old saying, "If I can do it, anybody can". I'm looking forward to this year, the canoe I finished this summer and the BBO bow I'm trying to build are gonna be taking a float hunt someplace. Might only be for tree rats but that's good too.

Matt...cool that your working on a canoe.   Thats a project on my "bucket list".   You Cannucks dealing with the snow this year....thanks a bunch for keeping it north.  We're enjoying a tropical time here in MT...just fine for me after last winter!

Glad to see not too many whiners.....someday I'll make it to one of the big Michigan events.  In the meantime, we just had a great Trad Bowhunter of MT banquet at Chico Hot Springs and I'll tell not all of the big name folks were east.   Don and Lori Thomas, the Robertson clan, Stan Rauch, Wayne and Carol Capp, Bob Savage, Jerry Karsky, Walt Francis... and many of my old friends and buddies from MT had a great time up here catching up.   Rich Wormington brought up a display of his bows, like he always does, along with the Robertsons, for those who were "looking", but our event is really more about friends and wild tales, and less about the vendors.

Having said that, Tim Roberts brought up a bunch of his new Absorkee Quivers, and sold them all, and took orders too!

In the meantime, while attending this on Friday and Saturday (it's held just a few miles from home...another plus for me) I got a couple great osage staves in the mail from a tradganger friend "out of the blue"....I am always blown away by the friends we have from this site.   One of the staves is nearly a century old...old fencpost from OK and Jay Massey's old hometown.  Some neat history and will make a good build-along perhaps here in the future.  I also got a couple "new to me" dozen arrows....one fletched and another a set of hickory shafts, purchased here from another tradganger.    Shot the bow a few times......

All in all, an absolute great weekend here in MT!

Glad I did'nt miss it for Kazoo....

On Saturday, my wife and I headed out to the base of Mount Rainier and went on a 3 hour snowshoe walk.  Weather was cloudy and 30, so the mountain was mostly covered.  More than once, I told my wife this would only have been better if I had my bow along with me.
