Title: Ghillie suits in tree stands?
Post by: buckeye_hunter on January 24, 2012, 08:10:00 AM
I did a search and found a few posts in regard to Ghillies being used in tree stands. I was wondering if more people out there could tell me of some of their experiences using ghillie suits in tree stands. I know doc(Tippit) had a few posts out there, but I was wondering if there are more?

I appreciate any input, such as;

How successful it is or does it catch in anything on the tree stand.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think I would use my ghillie in a tree stand....too bulky for my tastes. What  I have used very successfully is a leafy suit. It's light weight and fits over almost any other clothing I have whether it's already camo or not. The ghillie is prone to "velcro like" issues on tree bark and little stickers on limbs. My leafy suit is much less inclined to give me problems like that.

I used my ghillie in a tree stand for the first time this year with some success. The stand was a large two-man ladder stand and only about 12-ft high so I thought I needed some extra concealment. The large two-man bench seat provided plenty of room and I had no problems with the ghillie catching or snagging on anything. I had several deer under 20 yards and it didn't seem to bother them much. I will say that almost all the deer gave me a quick look before deciding I posed no threat. I eventually killed a small 8-pt at about 22 yards.

I use my Ghillie in treestands all the time.  I tend to have stands well hidden and the Ghillie just puts it over the top.  Have had these jumpy TX whitetails look me over and go back to eating until they start leaking that is.

X2 wingnut, I use my rancho in my tree stand 99% of the time.

I wear my ghillie in my treestand a good bit. I feel that it lets me get away with more movement when a deer is close and i am trying to run a camera and shoot a longbow at the same time.

My only experience told me I had to pay attention to the bottom of my ghuillie.

I was leaning out and bent at the waist to make the shot. I missed a chip shot because the bottom of the ghuillie got into my bow string.

God bless, Mudd.

I have no hearing on my right side so my ghillie allows me a little more movement without being picked up.  You do need to practice with the ghillie to be confident in using it though...tippit
