I have been using carbon arrows for years off of my Shrew longbows and am thinking about going to wood. I have 3 I want to set up. 50#, 55#'s and 59#. All at 28" and i pull just a bit over 28" and am looking to shoot VPA Terminator 160's.
I've never shot wood and am not sure on what spines I should be looking for on a 30" arrow. I would also like to keep the GPP up pretty high.

I am not a super expert, but 55-60 for spine and ash for a shaft works for for me in 11/32 shaft size.
Mine are cut at 29 1/4"

Without more info on the bow center cut string. Type etc. I'd say 60-65 for the first two and 65-70 for the last. Maybe a hair heavier.
Magnus is correct.... We have several Shrews and they are 50,52, and 55lbs. Bought some 60-65's and they almost wound up too short before they were stiff enough ! I now buy 65-70's and we too shoot 160gr heads and pull 27-29". If you like your arrows a little long you better get you some 70-75's or 75-80's for the 59lb Shrew.
Do yourself a big favor too and get you some Doug Fir Surewoods. Several sponsors on here offer them paralell or tapered.

Generally speaking with my Super Shrews over the years I go with 10-15# over marked weight at 28" draw (29" arrow) and 125 grain point.
Example, I'm shooting tapered Surewood shaft in 60-65 spine range with my 47@29" Super Shrew drawn to 29 inches with a 30" BOP arrow and 125 grain point(44@28+3#extra draw+5# for 1" extra arrow+10# low end of 10-15# extra for bow/string type)=62#.
You've got 35 grains more (approximate 1# of bow weight for each 5 grains), so roughly 7# of spine extra for your heavy points.
So to get you in the ball park for your 50# Shrew, I'd start with 50# plus 7# for extra point weight and then add 5# for 1" extra length on arrow and then 10-15# for style of bow/string. This would put you into a 70-75 arrow spine.
Now that I've said that, I'd order a test pack of shafts (I like the Surewoods) and you can get them from Wilderness Arrows or Braveheart and really make sure you're getting dialed in for your bows. Since you're trying to match 3 bows, this might be the best route for you. I'd suggest getting a 4 spine pack starting at 65-70 and going to 80-85 OR 60-65 and going to 75-80. This gives you 3 arrows in each spine group to see what groups best for each bow.
You can also double check with Ron LaClair too. I believe he used to recommend 15# over marked weight for spine. He also sells arrows made by Paul Jalon and I shot some up at Shrewhaven this fall and they flew great and of course are beautiful.
I'm sure any of them can get you fixed up with an GPP arrow weight that will work for you.
The Shrew bows made in 2011 on are cut to center. The ones built before this were +1/8". If you have one that is cut to center you could use 70/75's for the 50# bow. The 55# and 59# bow will require a little more spine the 30"bop. I'd go with 80/85's for them.

I corrected my post to note Wilderness Custom Arrows and not "Magnus" as source of Surewood. However, Magnus does great natural barred turkey feathers!
I've gotten shafts from Braveheart and Wilderness and feather from Magnus within the last month and all were great vendors to deal with.

WOW! Never shot wood! That always amazes me and I guess shows my age. ;) Looks like some good suggestions above--welcome to the wonderful world of wood arrows. They just go with traditional bows. Have fun! :thumbsup:
I am no technician but I shot 60-65 parallel cedars from my 02' Super Shrew delux for years. The bow is 56@27" and my arrows are 28 1/2 inches. They seemed to fly well. :dunno: :) :)
What tip weight were you shooting? Is your draw length the same as the bow is marked at 27"? Sometimes you can be close and with fletching masking an imperfection it looks ok.
