Title: Scared the Heck out of me this evening
Post by: D. Key on January 21, 2012, 08:43:00 PM
I went out about 45 minutes before dark to call some varmits and hopefful shoot a coyote with my longbow.  Turned on the dying rabbit call for about 30 seconds and about 1 minute later a fox screamed about 10 feet behind me (I was sitting on the ground).  I have heard before how they sound but never heard it "first hand".  Needless to say at 10 feet with a dead silent evening, it could have been a rogue lion and I wouldn't have jumped any higher.

I was done after that.  I'll try again later.

Doug out!

Made me laugh so hard    :biglaugh:

I had a similar experience once. I was in a friends barn, staking out trying to figure out what was killing chickens. I eventually gave up, and turned to leave the barn. Well, right in front of me, not five feet away, was a nice big skunk. It surprised me so much I nearly tripped over my own feet.

I luckily got away without being sprayed  :D

Doug, i know the feeling but it was a long time ago and I have not forgotten it. It was 1958 and we were calling on a creek north of Waco, Tx at night. There were three of us and a weems rabbit call and a bobcat came up and I missed him at 10 yards shooting over him. We moved down the creek a quarter of a mile and we were squated in a circle( All of us were shooting recurves with wood arrows) and started the calling and turned the lite on. Well about 50 yards out a bobcat started screaming and made a cirle around us and screamed the whole time. One of my friends was in the Air Force and when the cat left, he said if anyone had touched him with there bow he would still be running. We did not get a shot for some reason and that cat sounded like a Afrcian lion.(you can't make this stuff up) I remember it to this day over 50 years later. Ken Denton

I can relate. About a month ago I was slowly making my way through some fairly thick timber.

Suddenly, from about 20 yards to my left, I heard a long, low, deep growl. It sounded like a really big dog.

I immediately took about 3 steps backwards, nocked an arrow and kneeled against the base of a big tree to cover my outline.

Whatever it was, it backed out silently and I never did figure out what it was. Needless to say, I got out of there before it got dark.

Reminds me of the time me and my brother years ago decided to get into predator calling. Figured climbing into a old dilapidated barn, perched on beams  while watching the field while we played the dying rabbit call on a cassette tape seemed like a good idea. All went well till a great horned owl tried to come throught the side of the barn siding after us. I don't remember who fell first or who hit the hay first on ground floor but I do know I beat him to the car!

If that had happened to me I would probably be packing a pistol with me the next time I went to that area. I am not very spooky in the woods but anything that will growl at a human is not something I want to meet.

All this reminds me of a rainy day when my brother and I were slipping through a sopping wet pine plantation down in Mississippi. A hound hunter( it was legal then, don't know about now) came in and turner a dog loose.  He came up, silently in the wet needles, stuck his snout in Harry' knee crook, and took a big ole snork to see what he smelled like.  The yell stripped the feathers off 3 of my arrow, and we both were trying to climb invisible ladders to get away from  the grizzly bear.  We finally calmed down, and started down the log road again.  We hadn't gone 50 yards when we walked right under a giant, maneating owl.  When he blasted off, knocking limbs  and squirret nests all over us, werepeated the dance we had perfected earlier.
All I could think of was "Here be Dragons".

:biglaugh:  I had a coyote let out a wolf-like howl about 30 yards in front of me as I was walking in well before daylight one morning.  Until then I didn't know that hair really CAN stand on end.

Yeah, you will get a little pucker when an owl swoops downs and knocks your lid off...never hear it coming.

Buddy of mine was dragin a deer out one night years ago. Kept hearing somthing walking around him. He was perty spooked anyway so he didnt bother to shine a light until he reached his jeep. When he finally got his hand on the door of his vehicle, he turned and shined his light. A hole pack of yotes had fallowed him out of the woods. He said they didnt cut loose until he got the deer loaded and was ready to leave. Scared the absolute crap out of him. I got a good kick out it when he told the story though.  :D

Love these kind of storys, Jason
