Title: Cold messing with arrow flight
Post by: Caleb Andes on January 19, 2012, 06:32:00 PM
I was out shooting today in the 9 degree cold. My arrows were flying terrible. I know arrows shoot faster in the heat but I never thought the frigid cold could effect arrow flight this bad!?!?! Anyone having this problem?

I usually blame it on the heavier clothes.  :dunno:

I'd guess cold fingers are the culprit

Yup. Same here. But I start out fine and then it gradually gets ugly. Cold fingers. Cold muscles. Cold everything.

Arrows are not affected by cold.  Form on the other hand often is.

Never heard of temperature affecting arrow flight. Are you saying that it affects the spine of the arrow shaft?

The cold is the culprit, but it affects the body and not the shaft.   It is in the teens when I hunt rabbits at dawn.  By midmorning the sun creeps over the mountains and the temps go up, and so does accuracy

Not to mention that actually reaching full draw when wearing winter clothing is just about impossible.

Don't rule out a frozen stiff tab, glove and fingers.

"Cold" will affect your form, your muscles and by the amount of heavy clothes you wear. It's the nature of the beast.

Cold used to affect my arrow flight, but as I've gotten older I've found that, when the temperature dips to around zero, if I remain firmly planted in my recliner while reading Tradgang, the cold has no affect on my arrow flight whatsoever!

Why wait till it hits zero, also works when the wind is blowing

If I didn't shoot when the wind was blowing in Iowa, I'd be spending all my time in the recliner. There is a reason why Iowa is second only to Texas in wind powered generators!

Thanks Plumber...just added another awesome excuse to the list!

Try this: Leave your archery equipment outside and stay inside to keep yourself warm. After your bow/arrows are good and cold, go shoot. Then you'll know if it's you or the equipment.

Personally, I've seen less change in Trad equipment than modern in the severe cold. I once had a wheelie bow that shot 6"s high at 20 yards at -40.

There is a Trad Gang member who killed a polar bear and a muskox a year or two ago.  From reading his accounts, it was C-O-L-D there, and he did really well with his arrows' performance...
