A recent post with several repsonses was "who among the pioneers woudl you like to meet?" (paraphrased)- Great thread by the way. I'd liek to know - what would you aks them?
?the most unique hunting expereince ever?
?most significant advance in traditional archery?

When I read this post I thought you were asking about general pioneers, as in early settlers. Of course that wouldn't have been a Trad Gang-legal post so I was being a bit dumb. I'd love to have them (original setlers)describe the old-growth eastern forests.
However, I realize now you are looking for archery pioneer queries. I'd like to ask Mr. Bear what the new "Bear" archery should do to revitalize recurve and longbow archery.
I would have asked Mr. Bear if I could have shadowed him for just a year in all walks of his life; hunting and manufacturing.
To have been there in the early days of Bear Archery and in his prime of hunting adventures would have been unbelievable. He roughed it compared to todays hunts and modes of transportation. A horse, pack mule, and two or three other hunters. It would have been very nice.
I'd ask Howard Hill what the heck he was thinking shooting stuff off people's heads.
I know the firearms trick shooters of the same time period did the same sort of thing, but at what point in time did we wise up and realize that probabably isn't a good idea. You sure wouldn't see Byron doing that in a show today.
I would ask Davy Crockett if he wanted to jump in my Silverado and take a spin. Maybe run up to Nashville??????????
Floating the Moose John with Jay would be a dream come true.
Just sitting around a camp fire BSing with any or all of them would be great
I would love to ask Wilbur Allen a whole bunch of questions.
I would like to ask those French soldiers what happened that day and what they thought of those Englishmen and their longbows....lol
I would love to ask Ishi what he thought of scent lok clothing.
God bless,Mudd
I didn't know you spoke french Mudd.
That would be an interesting Q&A I bet
Hahaha!!!
Chuck I bet you also didn't know that I got married once in France.(A very long time ago) 2nd marriage.
But I have to confess, I did not speak french then nor do I today but somehow I always manage to communicate.
I don't speak German either but I fared pretty well when there also.
Vietnam, well that's a different story altogether and I guess I made out there as well since I made it back alive..lol (London wasn't as bad but not far behind with the bombings that were occurring)
God bless,Mudd
PS: Sorry but "drift" got me.. someone please bring this one back on track.
A camp fire talk with Fred Bear about his thoughts on bows and other trad stuff and on his Alaska hunting trips.
How did they ever kill anything without EFOC and single bevel heads? :biglaugh:
On a more serious note, I'm rereading Fred Bear's Field Notes. What a time that was for bow hunting and what adventures he had.
I would like to talk with Chet Stevenson about building yew wood selfbows.
Assuming I could communicate with them, and that they wouldn't simply kill me on sight, the pioneers I would choose to learn from were the Mongols. Some of the most impressive archers and horsemen who ever graced the planet.
I don't have as many questions, as I do thank yous, I'd like to share with many of them.
I would just like to hear some of their stories.
I think we should to open up a question and answer for Mudd. I bet that would be fun!!!!

I would like to just sit around a fire and listen to Howard Hill, Fred Bear, Saxton Pope, Art Young, Glen St. Charles, Chief Compton, basically anyone in the Bowhunters Hall of Fame, talk about public land, elk, roads, wilderness and where traditional bowhunters ought to fit in the scheme of things.
Muddis old enough to be a pioneer
Mr Gray Buffalo, that may well be true but I don't think that great white whale "Moby Dick" was still in a fish bowl when I was a kid...lol
God bless,Mudd
PS:I always use Mr with my seniors!
I would ask their thoughts on carbon arrows and other tech advances?
i think i would ask for help shooting..ive read stories of the older fellers shooting and killing game at distances the wheelie guys do now!

Yep, me too Pat, that would have been the greatest. I envy those who have.... I did get to meet Jay and shoot bows along side him at a traditional rendezvous. Has been one of the highlights of my life.
Hanging with Pope, Young, and Ishi would have been cool, but for hunting along side and sharing a campfire with the early modern era pioneers, Roy case comes to mind. It would have been great to go tag along with Fred Bear and Glenn St Charles on the Little Delta.
Got to meet Glenn St Charles at a rendezvous also, and will never forget (and had a good chuckle) this paraphrase of him in front of a crowd - "camouflage clothing is a gimmick, you don't need camo"...8^) Bout spit my drink, but bet a few sponsors just cringed...8^)
As for the question what would you ask them... A lot, but in what order depends upon the campfire and the drink in hand....8^)
I like to ask any of them about when the bug bit them - the moment they knew they'd rather hunt and shoot like an Indian more than like a cowboy.
I would ask to go on the boat ride with Lewis and Clark. Cant imagine what it must have been like seing some of those animals for the first time.
I'd like to see Old Ishmael making his bows and arrows, and then hunting.
I would talk to some Native Americans about what it was like "before" it was all pilferred and stolen.....
