That's ridiculous!! Can you get one of those at your local dollar store. Thanks for posting that Pat. If you like selfbows, you gotta appreciate that one. Kris, I'm doing well. Need to get down and visit sometime. Still wanting that obsidian blade. Coon season is starting to wind down, so I should have more time. I'm ready for it to be over...these late nights are hard on a working guy.
I remember that bow with the hotcha hotcha girls on it Jack, from a few years ago.
I believe Pappy's snake bow pulls 47#@28" and from what Pappy said it shoots very well.
Yep Pat I made that mud flap girl bow, a few years back. I said it was for "bucks only", killed a nice doe with it :)
Unreal bows! :notworthy:
Okay, here's my first osage bow. It's somewhat "overbuilt" and slightly heavy in draw weight(67#@28"), but it turned out rather well. I plan to work it down to a more manageable draw weight, if I ever get time to do it. I made this one in '97, I believe:

Here is a sinew and rawhide backed one I sent to a guy in SC and he has already taken two deer with it this fall.
Mike
All beautiful bows, men. Excellent work on those pieces of wood.
The other day I was shooting the sinew backed osage recurve I made and gave my son. It is a pleasure to watch an arrow fly right to where you are looking with one of theses. No pictures of it handy right now, though.
Got to say, fellas, if a stickler for the proper terms were to drop into this discussion they would give us grief on showing backed bows on a self bow thread. :D
I appreciate the Bows here.
Very nice work! :notworthy:
Ok this makes me want to try my own self bow!!!
This one was made by Bob Barnes. 56"and 50# flip tipped sinew backed with cottonmouth skins (I believe) and pin nocks. No hand shake and just as quiet as any bow I've shot.

Great looking bows!!!
Goose ya got to love a selfbow with a peep site :)
back up for more great bows!
Incredible talent! Gotta try this one day.
those are all great guys, i aspire to make myself one someday :thumbsp:
I'll put a few up. Most of my pics have dead animals with the bows. :bigsmyl: But that's what I make em for!
The first I think is an osage selfbow, and a rawhide backed yew selfbow. The osage bow went on to take a couple critters.
Next is a couple of experimental bows. I named them Frankenstein and "the bride". Both are made of parts of "dead and gone" bows, put together with some new techniques....that worked! They're ALIVE! And still shooting fine. Frankenstein is the snake covered sinew-backed osage, the bride is the sinew/static recurve, osage as well.
Here's another pair I made...and osage with bullsnake skin, and a bamboo backed Ipe. The osage took a couple critters....then blew apart one day as I drew it back for a practice draw in a treestand - after thousands of shots! The bamboo backed ipe is still one of the best bows, performance-wise I've ever made, and as a backup bow has taken a couple real nice bucks and some does. Sorry as many of these are not technically selfbows, but you work with what you have.

Here's a little 58" osage selfbow that I took a few critters with, then my son Kory used it one year and killed this great bull with it. It is in the 70lb range at our 27and half inch draw...like most of the bows I make to hunt with. Hard to see it in the pic....it's kinda plain flatbow with moosehorn tips.
Osage selfbow with leftover pieces of bullsnake from the busted one. Nice blackie I took with it.

Osage 32" no longer alive. 47" osage. 68" sinew backed osage recurve, it's back on the bench getting a snakeskin backing. Allan's recurve. 60" sinew backed osage pig stick. Last, my very first osage selfbow, stave given to me by Joe Mattingly. (prized possesion) Not pictured are a variety of longbows and stickbows.
I agree with Grey ghost. This is about as trad as it gets and the way I'm hunting next season!

Here's a few of mine. Some have underlays, siyahs, and/or splines in the limb tips, which doesn't quite make them a true selfbow, but the working portion of them all is a true stave.

Again, not quite a true selfbow, but this one was a salvage from a recurve that went haywire. I added ash siyahs to this little guy and came up with a sweet little hunting bow for yet another brother-in-law:

You might know this guy?

A lot of you guys are absolutely artists on the finish of all those beauties...I'm always impressed! It was'nt too long ago (it seems to me) there just wasn't too many guys building selfbows and all-wood bows. The internet has really brought us all together and revived an almost dead skill and artform. Always fun seeing all the fine bows...makes me become a better bowyer myself....thanks!
You guys are some fantastic artists! Those bows are awesome! :notworthy:
If anyone is interested in learning the skill there are a couple of gatherings each year where you can walk in with nothing more than the desire and "no fear of failure".
You too can walk away with a bow made by your own hand under the watchful eyes of some masters and just plain good old boys and ladies that know their stuff.
Check out trad events and gatherings.
God bless,Mudd
WOW Joe!!! :notworthy: :notworthy: :clapper:
You too 4est, holy cow!!

Mike, after that comment I'll have to take extra special time with your stave! I know its alreadry been a year but, it is on my bench and the next one I'll start on this building season.
Thanks!
By the way I kept posting my pics here even with my computer problems because I didn't feel the recent "Haversack Manpurse" thread should have more pages than a self bow thread.
:smileystooges:
No problem Joe. Good things come to those who wait.
I have some good staves awaiting delivery to ya.
I like your attitude Mike!
I like how you think too Joe....lol
Selfbow threads should always have more pages than man purses...lol
I still have it in my head to build just one more.
Mine never were more than just a stick that would bend enough to cast an arrow.
The only thing that would cause anyone to see any beauty in mine was just what beauty God gave the wood itself.
The bows I've seen on here would put most of the ones I ever made to shame.
Great job!!!
God bless,Mudd
PS: After drooling over these, maybe I'd better just save the shoulder for the shooting of them...lol
Hey Joy , I sure do recognize that brother of mine . Those boys look like they are doing great , good on ya for seting them up.

God fellas I can't believe the beauty and workmanship gone into these fine bows.I'm like Roy selfbow construction is out of my grasp.I recieved a beautiful Osage selfbow from a good friend of mine from Arkansas.it was his way of saying thanks for taking him and his friend Elk hunting in northern alberta,Man that bow is beautiful, one of my most prized treasures.Someday would love to get another one.I've got a Yew stave coming to try to make an Old English longbow,We'll see how she turns out.
Excellent post...keep em coming!

You may have noticed that I make my selfbows to hunt with and abuse the heck out of them. They don't stay looking pretty very long.
Just amazing Walt! WOW!!!!
If some one wants to make one that's 40-50 @29 I would shoot and take care of it for you
Beautiful bows Walt and an impressive bag of game! What weight bow did you take te Bison with?
Yes....what weight is the bow you used on the bison, arrow setup (i.e. weight, broadhead, wood type), distance, shot placement, story?
Outstanding!
Thanks for the excellent pics Walt.
Kris
Great stuff Walt!!! ... nothing like seeing them in action :)
Had to look at them again today,,, not the bows just Walts pictures!
INCREDIBLE!
Awesome photos Walt!
Thanks for the compliments.
The bison (a ranch harvest) was taken with Pigger, the bow I have hunted with for the past several years. She is 57-58# @ my 29". The arrow was a 30", footed hex pine shaft, tipped with a 190 grain grizzly, weighing 625 grain (I think). 15-18 yards shot, it penetrated almost to the fletching, and the bison was down in 15 yards and 30 seconds.
Simply Awesome.......
Great bows to All.
Walt, How heavy was that lion?
Great cat.
Walt, absolutely impressive
A few from awhile back,,haven't built any for a couple years but plan on getting back to it.

Mike
Can't wait to see them Mike. I hope they don't sell until I have. I love the painted ones but I really want to see that one that looks like an elk antler. I may have to copy that one!

A woodworking buddy of mine is getting into selfbows. If I show him this thread, I'm afraid he'll quit!
This is Super Trad!

Some beauties there, Richard. Mike, your just a "show-off"! Awesome bows though!!!! :notworthy:
Thanks Mark, you know someone once told me "it ain't bragg'n if you can back it up" LOL :biglaugh:
Your a mighty fine artist yourself in more ways then one!

This is "Herb's Bow", a bow I was asked to make by Herb Reynolds the founder of the Carolina Traditional Archers(CTA). Unfortunately Herb passed away before I could give him the bow so I donated it to CTA to be raffled off in Herb's name...

Holy cow!! Pat and Richard, my hat is off to you as well. I especially love the lines of the recurve, Pat! NICE!!
Nice Pat! Is that a backing or paint on the back of "Herbs bow". Almost looks like a bark backing.
I love the tissue paper idea. Also, those animal prints you posted earlier. I'll have to try that on some of my plain jane models.
Pat ,you are a truly talent man. :notworthy: Makes me want to hide some of the stuff I have made.....
Mark, that is choke cherry bark backing on Herb's bow. I like that stuff. I cleaned most of the moss and lichens off of it so the coppery colored bark would show through.
On this osage static recurve I left all the mosses and lichens on the choke cherry bark and just put Tru-Oil right over it. It has held up as my primary hunting bow for 3 years now and is still going strong.

This is an interesting thing that happened with this bow. I bought an osage stave from Mike McGuire when Herb Reynolds asked me to make a bow for him. The stave I bought was cut a month before. I got a belly split and two back staves from this one. I made Herb's bow and this bow with the 2 back staves. I had this one shooting just over 2 months off the stump. It felt dry and worked like a dry stave but began to take set and developed a few frets in the lower limb. I set it aside for about a year. At that time I added a thin tapered piece of Argentine osage to the belly of each limb and re-tillered her. Now she shoots like a champ and I never had any more trouble with her.
I always wondered about chokecherry bark....I have a bunch of it around here. I'll have to give it a try too. I did build a chokecherry bow several years ago, and shot it a bunch. It dried out a bit too much the first winter, and it blew on me.....been meaning to build another but have'nt got around to it.
Walt...I've located a couple big junipers that have washed up behind the house, we'll go and check out this weekend when you come over. There is definitely some usable wood there, maybe billets for a bow project.....but lams for sure.

Hickory backed with boa and horn/purpleheart overlays
Here's a couple more pics I was able to dig up. First couple critters, the moose and velvet deer were taken with an osage selfbow named "Bullwinkle" that I made just for the Alaska trip. It has taken a bunch of game for me. Wish I had "better" bow pics.
The next is an osage bow....it was a very narrow stave and so I built it more like an english longbow, with a deeper limb profile. I also backed it with rawhide "just in case". I took a few deer with it. I named it "Twist and shout" for the way the limbs twisted opposite each other when strung. It eventually developed crysals on the belly and I retired it.
Perhaps the slowest, ugliest bow I ever made, but a safe one! I took a few deer with it. I could never come up with a name for it.....just an osage club! I ended up giving that bow to Alex Roche who has gone on to build a few selfbows himself.
Mark, give choke cherry bark a try. It is very strong and will add a bit of performance as well as protection.
I also have a few bows that don't want to be named. All the othere name themselves.

Very cool bows fellas. Gonna try my hand at building one myself sometime this spring. An Amish friend of mine has made several. So he's gonna show me the ropes. Hope all goes well!
Jason
Everybody, those are some great lookng bows.
Pat, I love those bark-backed bows.
Mark, Sounds like a plan.
DVS, Is that a Python, Boa, ? skin on the bow with the pink tips?
Great looking bows fellas! It is just what I needed to see, I am in the process of building my first osage selfbow! I am hoping it'll launch a few arrows soon...I am already planning out the next one...I think I have found a new passion!
Travis
Walt, that is a boa skin i used. Ive still got the other half two but it doesnt have the same colors. They faded from tail to head unfortunatly.
After seeing some of the other beautiful bows posted on here I'm almost embarrased to show mine but heres a few of them anyway.
Left to tight in this pic are 50# osage, 65# osage, 48# black locust, 50# hickory, 48# osage, and 50# juniper.

The black locust bow is probably the ugliest one bit it is a lot of fun to shoot it.
Sorry guys I dont know why those pics came out so big, I resized them but I'll go back and try it again.
14 pages of show-off's......makes me sick :biglaugh: ....You guys build some sweet bows for sure! Cool thread as well.
Jamey,
Those are some nice looking bows, the type I always hunt with. If I fancy up my bows too much they are usually dontated to St. Judes or the PBS because I will abuse the heck out of them. Besides, not many woods are pertier then Osage after it starts to darken up.
Well show off too Pearlie. I've heard of at least one incredible bow you have made but Ruddy will post those pics. I'm sure you have others.
Walt said it, Jamey.....my favorite bow is still a plain old osage selfbow. No worry's, just dependable.
Still fun from time to time to purty them up, though, and try something new!
Nothing better than a simple ole workhorse osage straight limb selfbow. It is one you can depend on under any conditions!
Here's a Hackberry I think it was #4...

Don't like to toot my own horn about the bows I make unless it a very special one.
I made this one as a thank-you bow for a very special guy I met at the Hill shoot several years ago. Gil was badly wounded in Afghanistan, in spite of wounds that would have put a lesser man in a wheelchair for life, Gil's strength of character and no quit attitude allowed him to rehabilitate himself and go on with life.
Here is the bow that I had the honor to make for him;
Osage, 66" NTN, 56#@28".

64", 55# @ 27", has a little character.

That is beautiful!
Why is this on the second page? Keep em comin.
Here are the bows that I have at this particular time. New ones being made and old ones going all the time.
The two on the left are hickory, the middle two are osage and the two on the right are sisters from a stave given to me by Shawn Leanord.

Glen, I was wondering when you would show a pic or two!
Great looking batch of bows Glen... I like the dye and stain work
Thanks Coaster.Alcohol based anniline.I bought four small jars of the powered and mix as I need it.
Beautiful is all I can say! You are all incredibly talented!
Just finished this one today... my first Osage and my first snake skins...

I love your self bow Kip!
Great job!
I know you had to want it badly as there's not much hedge in your area.
I can't think of any wood I'd pick over Osage for a self bow.
They are just tougher than woodpeckers lips.
Congratulations!
God bless,Mudd
Thanks Mudd... It really shoots for me but it's in the mail soon going to it's new owner... It's one of my trade bows... I've got my other one about done also... love building and shooting these things!!!
I start to like these bows a lot... Maybe one day I will try my hand at making one!!!
Thank you for sharing all these photos!
There's a part of me that misses making them.
I may make one for myself since of all of them I've built over the years I never kept one of my own for myself.
I picked up a bamboo backed IPE bow blank that I have plans to work on at Dave's in a couple of weeks.
I just hope it's like riding a bicycle....lol
God bless,Mudd
Mudd, I've got the tips sanded down today and I"m glueing on a few pieces of Tigerwood today. You can rough it out and go to town.
Thank you Dave!
Woo Hoo! I can't begin to tell you how nervous I am about putting my hand to that awesome bow blank.
It will be a crying shame to ruin it.
Hopefully I will round up an Osage stave this year as well.
At least Osage is a wood I have a memory of working on, unlike IPE.
God bless,Mudd
Here are just a few of mine.
Hopefully the pic is correct size
Troy
Nice Troy.... the top one would be my pick of your litter with number 2 being my 2nd choice.
Good work!
God bless, Mudd
PS: Have you ever made one like #2 with brush nocks?
Thanks Mudd,
The top bow is my hickory backed lemonwood ELB. Second down is my hickory static tipped recurve. Third down is my slightly snakeie osage.
Fourth down is Hop Hornbean.
Fifth down is my personal choice. it is sinew backed osage with banded water snake skins and a takedown sleeve.
Sixth down is my wifes multi layer
seventh down is my daughters osage
eighth is my reflex tipped hickory.
All are good shooters. They do their part, but I often fail on my end.
Troy
Wow Troy !!! Now that's a collection of sweet shooters :)
Just finished my Tradgang trade bow 2012..
It's another Yew with flipped tips, braided hemp grip and an antler rest..

Nice work!
God bless,Mudd
Coaster,
That is just a sampling of what I have made. I thought I had lost some of my bows in the two moves my wife and I have made in the past six years.
Acouple of weeks ago I found two bow tubes that I thought were empty. Guess what was inside?
Here is what the abobe bows look like on the backs with the exception of the ELB. The string follow forced me to show it's belly.

BTW, forgot to say the bottom hickory bow is rawhide backed.
Troy
Troy that find must have made your day!
I am super impressed with your handy work.
God bless,Mudd
PS: I know it won't happen but I would love to stumble onto one of those around the house or shop that I made all those years ago.

Sorry, hit the wrong button.
What I started to say is, I was out in the garage looking for a paint roller and moved afew things around to be able to get to a cabinet that was covered up. When I grabbed the bow tubes I noticed they were heavy. The fealing I had at that time was unreal. It was like the little boy that saw his dog heading back down the driveway after been gone for several days. :bigsmyl:

Darin,
That is a great looking bow, I want to learn but don't have someone near by to teach me, and where to get the wood.
With deer season over I seem to have a little more time on my hands. I just looked at all 16 pages of this thread and it really inspires me to get down to the shop and starting some new projects. Such a collection of talented craftsmen.
Thanks John that was my 3rd or 4th attempt, really amazing how much easier it is with a good teacher.
All I can say is Awesome Self bow is on my to do list.
Here's an Osage recurve I backed with sinew. I made it about 6 years ago-Adam looks 14 there. It is still shooting well. It finished up just over 50#.

Tajue17, that is one very cool looking bow!!!!
There are a lot of very nice sticks in this thread.
I hope I can find one someday that will stay together for me. I have had very bad luck with breaking selfbows with my 29.5"DL.
Bisch
Bisch have you tried osage maybe a ELB style with skinnier limbs? reason I say ask is my buddy who has a 31" draw and usually shoots a 70" Stewart because of his long draw also shoots a 70" osage selfbow and it has been holding up after a few years.
I have had several osage bows. They were all shorter, like 66". I think I just need one about 70" that is tillered for my DL.
The last one I had was what we call a composite bow down here. It was an bamboo backed ipe bow that I was slowly falling in love with. It broke 6 days before the Texas State Longbow shoot!
Bisch
I think you can stay 66-68 if you have the back sinewed maybe even reflex the tips for some zip.
Clint, very talented, great looking bows! Love those cane arrows, too!
Tajue, cool looking stick!
Love them selbows!
Here is my first - I have 8 staves so hope to knock out a couple more this winter....46@28 60" 2 courses of sinew....shoots real good...I'm hooked for sure (http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb364/gabedard/IMG_1520%202.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/gabedard/media/IMG_1520%202.jpg.html) (http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb364/gabedard/IMG_1518%202.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/gabedard/media/IMG_1518%202.jpg.html) (http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb364/gabedard/IMG_1513%202.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/gabedard/media/IMG_1513%202.jpg.html) (http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb364/gabedard/IMG_1514%202.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/gabedard/media/IMG_1514%202.jpg.html)
