Title: New to Traditional hunting.
Post by: Kerrtw on January 14, 2012, 05:18:00 PM
Hey guys I am new to the site and wanting to get into Traditional hunting. I know nothing what so ever about traditional bows. I am wanting to get a recurve to play aroung with. I have no idea what kind of bow I should get or what to look for in a recurve. I am not wanting anything fancy, just a bow to learn with. Any advice on what would be a good starter bow would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

I'd suggest looking for a bow in the 40-45# range for an average strength guy....maybe even less.

A longer bow is generally easier to shoot than a shorter one.

There are many good deals on used bows here in the classys.

One of the most important parts of liking a bow is how much you like the grip....might have to try a few to really get an idea of what you like.

If shopping for a bow, try as many as you can from where ever you can.

Look for a bow that doesn't have cracks or lines in the limbs.

Check out this link...   http://www.tradgang.com/docs/trad.html

Learn to use the search function on this site or an advanced google search searching only this site.

There is so much good info here it's unbelievable.
Look in the other rooms as well..not just the powwow.

Enjoy the ride...but be careful...it can be really addicting.

Welcome to the fire. You should read this for new guys.  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=082053

And I would suggest looking at the shooters forum on the main page for help with the shooting aspect.
You will get answers to all your questions from some of the most knowledgable people in archery here.

Welcome to the 'Gang! You might try a thread with your state in the title asking for help/advise. There may be someone close to you that could help you get started.

Also, keep an eye on the Trad Events forum for shoots near you, that's where you can really get to handle and shoot different bows to see what suits you.

Good luck on the journey, you're in for a lot of fun.

Welcome, I would recommend finding some local trad guys or a shop who have several types of traditional bows you can try. The advice for getting a light bow is right on. I started with 45, and if I knew then what I know now, it would have been 35.

:wavey:        Can't go wrong with a Bear Grizzly or Kodiak, Martin Hunter or Mamba or a quality used custom one. Kohannah, Check-Mate, Mahaska are all good ones. Light # bow.  Figure out your draw length! Very important once you find a bow. Easiest way to do this is get an arrow. Draw the bow with the arrow. Hit an anchor spot that you will comfortably hit every time. Finger in corner of mouth, etc, etc. Have the person mark the arrow. That should be your draw length. Add half to a full inch extra. That's what you should cut your arrow to.  Now you can figure out an arrow. Alum, carbon,or wood. The choices are yours. We will be here to help.         :archer:
