My 13 year old son decided to sell his compound bow so he could get a recurve.The other day I told my boy that he should look into buying new arrows for next year because his will be too short. He told me that he didnt want to buy arrows for his compound because he wanted to hunt with a recurve for next year. Needless to say that I,m very excited about his decision and his bow will be up for sale in a few hours.
Now we have to decide on a bow. He wants a Bear Grizzly but I told him that he should not get that bow yet because he will need a lighter weight bow now and in a year or two a heavier one.
What do you guys suggest? Where should he start and what are some low cost recurves that are available?
I saw online that the Sammick Sage has a recurve for about $140 , new sets of limbs are $72.
I think he needs to start with about a 35# bow, his draw is about 25".
Any suggestions or advice will be helpfull. I want to get him started asap for next season he will need the time.
As I read your post I instantly thought of samick. I started with a stingray that out shot me Everytime I picked it up. Also Chek mate has a longbow called the beaver creek. They come in lower #s and can really pump and arrow out there.

Check the classifieds and even put up a WTB post. There are some great deals on there and people will come out of the woodwork with bows. I picked up a Kodiak Mag for $125 or so and a 35# left handed bow for my father in law for dirt cheap
I to have a 13 yr old he is shooting a 42-43 lb recurve built by a good friend of mine hatrict here on tradgang he shoots it well.the samick is a good bow.It would nice to get him to shoot one before you bought it. he
may be able to shoot 40 lbs by next hunting season plus he will have all summer to shoot.between shooting an growing over the summer he may do fine with a 40lb bow.ofcourse you dont want to overbow him but you will be suprised how fast he burns throught those limbs.I made my son pay for some of the new limbs.he was going through them that fast..also check out elkridge archery they have some great bows.they also have a buy back program that is very nice good luck to you an your son I love huntin with my son it is a dream come true send me a pm an let me know how you made out good luck ED Long
I recently picked up a new (discontinued) Martin Rebel on E*** for the opening bid of $100.00 for my 13 yr old and he loves it. Keep your eyes open for overstock big box store brands.
You can pick him up a used grizzly within your price range.
I killed a lot of deer with old bear bows when I was younger.
Now, 35#@28" will be around 29#@25".
If he can handle 35#@25", then you want to look into 42#@28".
What # was he shooting with his compound?
Yeah check the classifieds like others said. I picked up a Great Northern bushbow for my step son (12 years old)that was 45 @28" for $325 and he shoots it really well.
Check out the classifieds and get something with mojo ..... beaver creek, that's a bow I REALLY regret trading.
An old bear would be hard to beat also.
My sons compound was 40#, so I was thinking we should get a 35# recurve.
I'd get him a samick at 35# to start with then he can buy heavier limbs at a great price. He can allways sell it and up grade latter. I just sanded down rounded and shaped a riser for a friend and it looked pretty good.
Mike Mecredy from Maddog bows, his mid level bows are $195 plus tax, he is building my 13yr old sons first custom bow, he picked the woods and tips for the bow. Mike is great to discuss poundage, draw length, etc.! Cant tell ya what the bow is like yet but my boy and I are sure excited to see it. Look up new Kaliska for 2012 thread from a couple weeks back. When I researched his work on the thread he had a lot of positive comments on his work and contributions to archery!!
I think he wants the sage so that he can get heavier limbs when he wants to.
The next decision will be the arrows ,I'm thinking that full length 35/55 gt.s will work along with some weighted inserts.
You need to be talkin' to Mike Mecredy...that's all I'm going to say...except for he's the real deal and can work with ya vs. going with somebody who is foreign and mass produces...you do the math.
I think you're right on about the draw weight. My three kids all shoot with 35#@28" recurves but only draw in the low to mid 20"s range. They range in age form 12 to 17 years of age and have been able to use the same bows ever since I got them for them several years ago. All three bows are older bows which I purchased used online. They are Browning, Proline, and Darton bows in very good condition and I paid from $80 to $115 I think for each of the three bows. They are shooting 1716 Easton XX75 arrows.

Yeah I think 35# will be good, I dont know about the waston arrows but I'm sure gt. 35/55's will be fine. Thanks for sharing.
I would take a look on ****. There are currently alot of great bows on there!
+1 on the Samick, I've got a Redstag takedown that I'm very pleased with, alot of bow for the money, limbs starts at 30Ibs and goes up to 60Ibs, a bow to grow with ;)
