I once went hunting the day after I ran a stick into my eye dragging a deer. I had a patch on that eye and the pain meds gave me diarreha. Climbed the tree 3 times.

My wife wasen't to happy when she figured out where I was. Just couldn't see wasting a day laying in bed.

Dropped my favorite arrow off my bow. It stuck in the ground right beneath the tree stand. I used my string for pulling up my bow to make a lasso and it took me about five tries but I lassoed my arrow and brought it back up to me.

I have also done the same thing with my bow hand glove. Dropped it. Reached out and cut a v shaped dogwood branch from a nearby tree and tied it to the loop of my string for pulling up my bow.

I fished for about three minutes but hooked it and brought it up.

It would have made a good video to watch.

Hunting bloopers.

Jumped off a 25+ foot sandy cliff to escape a bluff charge from a huge cinnamon colored black bear sow with cubs in Alberta. Came out unscathed!

This tops it for me, LOL! Mind you I was in my birthday suit while retrieving this doe. I had a LONG walk back to the car and had to make sure there were dry clothes for the drag out.

Like Bud B I've dropped my glove, hat, side packs and fished them up with my haul rope which has a hook on it.

Got the bow hung up in vines and could not pull it up so had to undo the climber and lower myself to untangle it.

Got the climber at a bad angle many times and had to come down to adjust and go back up again.

The biggest boner was I used a 6V lantern which I'd hang under the stand on a hook. All the deer that morning would hang up 100 yards from me and turn back. When I got down I discovered the red blinking light button had been hit and all morning I had a red blinking light under me.

This Dec I decided to bowhunt during rifle season and needed my climber instead of the box blinds and got all the way into the swamp and forgot my climber. Had to take the tractor out and get the stand and come back. Cost me a lot of time.

Mine tend to be taking a nap on a warm rock mid day.   Some of the areas I hunt have lots of bears and cougars.  I woke up once to see a female black bear with cubs slowly climbing the steep slope I had been glassing from the top of all morning.  She bolted when I stood up to let her know I was there.

On a hunt two years ago I passed on a cow elk with two young calves and spooked the herd trying to sneak up to the herd bull.   I worked my way up the creek about 3 miles and decide to take a quick nap after lunch.  I woke up and started back down the creek.   I found a fresh steaming  pile of wet elk poo about 30 yards from my nap spot.  They must have stood there and looked at me wondering what I was up to before crossing the creek.

I figured I crossed a sort of milestone this year. Over the years
I have often fallen asleep in my tree stand and woke up just as I dropped my arrow to the ground. This year, I fell asleep and dropped the  bow. Another reason I now use a harness .

Does dumbest mean craziest?  I was hog hunting in Texas on a large ranch and my group had a largest hog prize.  As I was stalking through the Cactus, I saw a what appeared to be a black hog taking a siesta with its head under said cactus.  I got within twenty yards, had a great quartering away shot and made a great shot on a trophy Corsican Ram.  It was a true trophy and the biggest bone head thing I have done hunting to the day.  It is a beautiful trophy and much respected but I learned a very valuable lesson monetarily and ethically that day.

Went into a swamp to recover a black bear I'd shot.  My buddy was up on a high bank above giving me hand signals.  With one hand he held up two fingers with the other hand five fingers.  I "assumed" he meant 25 yards and proceeded to walk right on top of the bear at 7 yards.  Two fingers plus 5 fingers equals 7 not 25  :)  Tricky thing was the bear wasn't done.  At three yards I was facing him.  He was seated in a low depression amongst thick cover.  I had an arrow nocked hoping he would lift his chin for the only possible finishing shot at that angle.  All I saw was claw and paw swat the brush down in front of him.  I drew and put a cedar shaft into his cheek.  He ran by me at two yards to my left, blood from the original chest shot marked the birch trees on both sides of him as he ran between them.  I turned in the heat of the moment and took chase on foot.  After about 5 steps my senses kicked in to what I was doing and I stopped.  The bear died on his feet running only about 25 yards.  Several morals to this story.  One, give them at least an hour.  Two, youth and adrenaline can get you killed.  Three, one of the most exciting hunts I've had.  The bear hide, complete with 2 blade cut in the cheek, now covers my sons bed at the cottage.

My buddy and I were running late for a late afternoon / evening elk hunt...bailed out of the truck and hiked a couple miles up a steep hill to get set up on the edge of a high meadow...elk bugling all around us...it was GREAT except my quiver full of arrows was still in the back of the truck...early dementia ; I guess...by the way my buddies arrows were about three inches too short...not that funny at the time ! and the dumb *** award goes to....

I once went turkey hunting with a friend the day after I got out of the hospital. I had been in the hospital for 2 days passing a kidney stone. I didnt realize how weak I was or how serious a Morphine induced hangover could be untill I started trying to walk out of a deep canyon with a 20+lb bird on my back. Thankfully I had a good friend with me who carried my bird and my gear while I crawled out of the woods to my truck. Not my smartest decision ever. It pains me to say it, but I should have listened to my wife when she told me not to go.

Maybe not the craziest thing I ever did...

I once made a good-looking shot on a fine Thanksgiving evening buck here in Ohio. Figured the buck was dead in under 100 yards. I came back with later with 2 friends to track and drag by lantern light. Something was amiss...2 hours and no deer. The longest blood trail I've ever followed just kept going. Late into the night we finally caught up to this mortally wounded buck. He'd lost so much blood that he couldn't stand up and remain concious. Lying down however, he was fully alert. For legal and ethical reasons I had no bow with me, so..

My 2 friends held lanterns while I crept around behind the buck. I slipped up on him and punched him through the lungs with my hunting knife. Try to imagine a 175 pound blue marlin with sharp tines thrashing up against you and knocking hell out of everything in a 15' radius. My injuries weren't severe, unlike the buck which had expired. I have a very vivid memory of staring into a bright lantern and hearing my good friend chuckle these words: "Kevin...you really know how to put on a good show!"

Was hunting with a buddy once. Plan was for him to sit at spot A while I still-hunted through a big woods patch for most of the day ending with a slow drive by him.

Early in the hunt, I cut my right index finger (I'm right handed) badly on a broadhead.  Spent the next two or three hours trying to learn how to shoot two-under while maintaining direct pressure on my index finger.

After the hunt, we stopped by the ER for stitches.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Not really crazy but definitely dumb...

This past Fall I was running late for an afternooon hunt so I took great pains when walking to my stand in order that I wouldn't make a bunch of noise. When I got there I turned on the dumbazz switch. I laid my bow against the tree and started out to the shooting area, fishing through my pockets for my scent pads. When I found them I looked up to see a big 8 point just standing there, broadside, looking at me. He wasn't 20 yds away. The sun coming through the trees lit him up like a christmas tree. How do I know he was 8 points? Cause he stood there that long! He finally turned and strolled outta there (Not running)as if he was bored. I never did see him again...

Several years ago while on a hog hunt in TX I had to do the dumbest thing ever.  :knothead:

While driving back to camp we spotted a huge bobcat walking in the road straight towards us. Rather than drive on we stopped and watched. Knowing any movement would send he running we both sat still and watched. The cat walked straight up to the truck. Once he was so close to the truck I couldn't see him I whispered to my buddy to see if he was coming on his side or not. A second later I could see he was coming down my side. When the cat was right under my window I stuck my head out and yelled Yeeeehaaaa! I thought it would turn him inside out and scare the skin right off him. To my suprise he didn't run. Instead he did turn inside out, only with his claws and teeth slashing and snapping only inches from my face.  :help:

Never touched me but I did have one heck of a knot on the back my head from hitting the top of the door.  :banghead:

My buddy did get the last laugh anyway.

Shot a doe this fall that ran into a swamp. Tracked her for a while then took a break. While taking my break I looked around and realized I had no idea where I was. Luckily the High school off in the distance had one of their pole lights on so I oriented myself off of that. Never realized how different a swamp looks when it's dark out....

Man theres not enough room for me to list all these things but here's one.

Up in Canada a few years ago and the temp was in the single digits and the wind honestly could knock you down because everything was ice.

First morning in the stand and 15 minutes later a 120in 10 pointer comes by grunting like crazy with a doe.

They went to the bait that was 50 yards away and man it hit me worse than ever before, i had to go do #2.

I got down without scaring the deer off and just left everything in the tree except my backpack with all my things in it.

I ran 100 yards in world record time im sure and got up close to the road and did my business.

I always carry 2 packs of those huge scent free wipes when hunting for many reasons. Clean my hands after cleaning a animal or wiping the sweat off my face after a long walk in.

But the main reason is when i have to go while in the woods. Anyway i got through doing my business and reached in my pack to get those wipes and they were so frozen i could have drove a nail into the tree.

This happened 3 times in 2 hours and i ruined my smartwool shirt.  :banghead:    :banghead:

While hunting in Illinois on a 4 day hunt, I passed a 17 yard shot on a doe. They encouraged you to shoot a doe, but I passed. Now why would someone who has never killed a deer with a trad bow and only had one shot since 1971 pass a 17 yard shot at a relaxed doe.   :banghead:    :banghead:    I still don't know why ........

I was lucky enough to get stuck in a tree with my climber.  Funny how the cables slid right over that 3" thick 9" long stump sticking off the back of the tree 18' high on my way up but no matter how hard I tried they would not go back over on my way down.  I had lowered my stuff to the ground and released the other end of the pull rope because I thought I would just be climbing down.  I ended up climbing up higher to get a branch that I could use as a hook. climb down to where I was stuck then tied my clothes together and to the stick so I could lower it down and snag my pack. I pulled it up got my saw and went to work on stump.  In all it took about an hour to get down.

Well this year...
I was hunting along a creek that was bordered by large tracts of private property. One side being owned by the sewer company, the other side by the railroad. I had found a few crossing points where the deer went from one side of the creek to the other. I would sit here, and early in the season there is a lot of activity.

Now the way this works is if you walk on the land your trespassing. Stay below the flood zone and its public property. Part of your estuarian right. Essentially the only way to access this area is by kayak or canoe. Im some what of a large man and my legs tend to fall asleep and go numb in my little olde towne otter.

One chilly day about mid November I was trying to get out of my 'yak and didnt realize my legs had fallen asleep. Sound asleep. Put one foot on the ground and tried to get up. My legs gave out. Kayak rolled. I went face down in the water. Bow floating away in the current. Im floundering in about 10 inches of ice cold water trying to get my cell phone out of my pocket and catch up with my bow, and my yak, which are now both sailing away without me, all with absolutely no feeling in legs. All said and done I, and my bow, and my yak, were all fine.

Ive since learned to rotate which butt cheek I sit on when in my kayak so as to prevent any further incidents resulting from a loss of sensation.

Back in the day of the old kwikkee quivers without a hood to cover broadheads, my brother and I were trying to push deer along a river.  he was standing, I was pushing toward him, along a steep river bank when I slipped, and slid about 75 yards down the bank. I got up, and felt a draft.  When i looked down, I had slit the inseam of my pants, from the crotch all the way down, and they were just flapping in the breeze. i was very lucky, and never cut any skin!

I unstrung my beautiful Toelke Whip longbow with my treestand!  I was climbing down out of my tree with my climbing stand in the dark in the brush.  I had lowered my bow using one of the retractable string reels.  I was getting close to the ground and felt the bottom of the stand hang up on a branch so I gave it an extra flip with my feet and heard the very disturbing sound of a bow being unstrung the wrong way (the branch turned out to be the upper bow limb that had been lifted by the string reel, held upright and caught in the stand section).  Got home and examined bow and string.  Restrung the bow and tried it---it shot as good as ever.  Dan's bows are not only great looking they are strong and hold up to guys like me doing things like that.

Was out stalking and still hunting one afternoon when I came across one of the many delopidated barbed wire fences on our property. The top of the fence was laying on the ground away from me at about a 15 degree angle. I decided to step on the top wire to keep from tripping over it and as I did the bottom of the post broke loose and shot backwards. My feet went backwards with the wire and I did the prettiest 10.0 swan dive right in the middle of a 4 foot diameter prickly pear cactus. Spent the rest of the weekend pulling needles from clothes and flesh.

I was hunting state land and it was a warm rainy fall day and as i was walking down the logging road see a deers back and got off the road and hunkered down to see what it was. well the deer moved off in the opposite direction. but the whole time i had been crouching down along a large tree watching the deer with my binos, i kept loosing my balance swaying but never falling to the side or back. as soon as i stood up i heard what it thought was a locust on the ground in the leaves. so i was looking for this noise when i finally spotted it... a huge and i mean huge rattle snake was a foot from me and never struck me, and he was pissed! thank God i didn't loose my balance and fall backwards or put my hand back to catch myself or it would have bit me for sure!! i was so mesmerized cause this had been first one i ever seen in the wild, the eyes and look of those are crazy! it was a black faze and you can tell by looking at those even if you didn't know what it was... it was death! there no doubt about it! it was about the size of my calf in the center and i would say 4-5ft long with about 12 rattles! i was later told that was a really large one. i was just so amazed by the thing i kept watching it and it started to leave so i cut it off and it was all curled up buzzing like mad and i got closer yet to get a really good look not knowing the strike distance of a snake that large... all of a sudden death lunged at my shin missing me only by inches!!! i about craped myself! it was like lightening, fastest thing i have ever seen in my life! only by my guardian angel did that strike fall short.. i wish i would have killed it and kept it but they were out of season and i didn't have my license for them... never seen one since..

I can relate to that pumatrax.  One season I decided I didn't like my bow quiver anymore and switched to a side quiver.  A buddy called and invited me to hunt with him at his honey hole.  He's pretty tight with sharing his spots so this was a rare opportunity.  He picked me up and off we went.

It wasn't until I was comfortably seated in the stand that I discovered the big difference between a bow quiver and a side quiver.  With a side quiver you need to remember to bring more than your bow.....

I guess in a way I was relieved that I didn't see anything that afternoon.

I was hunting with a good friend. We knew there was a buck in the valley below  us. We decided  to try and rattle it in for a shot. I climb up a post oak and set a stand and my friend moved back about 60 yards to rattle. He had barely started rattling when the buck (8 Point) came stomping up the hill and walked right the my stand and turned broadside. I made a good shot and was so excited I turn around and walked right out of the stand. Took off about 4/5 limbs before hitting the ground. I jumped up and checked myself and had only had tore my coat. Lucky

This is back in the day, you know, before safety belts or harnesses. I sat down on the platform of my home made portable stand and took about a 45 minute nap. I was surprised I was still in the stand when I woke up! The funny thing was that a doe was standing there looking at me when I woke up. I was probably snoring.

The only one I have that is not a gun related story is; I was clearing out some briars patches around a new stand with a machete and was not paying attention, when I took a good semi downward swing to the right and felt a thump on my foot. The machette had hit the top of my boot cutting almost all the way through the toe all but about 1/32nds of an inch.Thank god I had on a thick pair of hunting boots or I would be a Jack Dempsey of archery. Just had a nice bruise across the toes for a couple weeks.

Maybe not the craziest, but definitely one of the dumbest!!

A few years ago a friend and I were shooting before heading to our stands, for a afternoon hunt. We were both shooting broadheads. As we were finishing shooting and getting dressed, my friend said he needed to change one of his broadheads he'd been shooting to a freshly sharpened broadhead.

Well, he couldn't find his broadhead wrench and me being the "most patient" person said, "let me have it, I don't need no stinking wrench!!!".....bad move!. Needless to say, I felt the "sting" as my thumb slipped off the broahead. I remember saying "ouch" and "I think I cut myself". As I lifted my hand up the blood came from under the glove I had on and down my arm. I was afraid to take my glove off because I thought my thumb might still be in it. Luckily it wasn't, but I had cut the upper third of my left thumb to the point the doctors flipped the skin and thumbnail over the bone to clean it, then stitched it together. I still don't have any feeling in the top third of the thumb.

One interesting note. When I went to the ER, the attending nurse told me "maybe you got what you deserved, hunting defenseless animals!" I didn't much care for that woman!

*** ALWAYS USE A BROADHEAD WRENCH!!!!! ***

My very first trad deer, a small buck, shot from the stand, then again laid up while trailing later, then we trailed him to the wide Miss. River, where he had jumped in, then came out about 100 yards downstream. As he floundered on his side on the riprap just feet out the water, I crept up with my final arrow, hit him squarely, then threw my new BW bow on the rocks, charged up, and had to grab him from sliding back into the river, where I would lose him for sure.
It was crazy there for a minute with hooves, horns, and one broadhead going around like a buzz saw, with me holding on to one rear leg trying to stay clear, and keep us both from sliding in the river.

This actually happened this year. I was determined to kill a deer with my longbow. Wife said I was insane!
This particular morning I hiked nearly a mile with climber, backpack, bow and extra clothes. Arrived at a small creek that I can usually cross with my  rubber boots if I am REALLY careful. The creek enters a river near where I usually cross.

I arrive to find that the river is swelled much worse from recent rains than I would have expected and it has backfilled the small creek. It is about 6am and temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. I remember seeing some frost in the lower areas walking in. So I have two choices. Hike back or find another place to cross?

Well I hiked a short way upstream but the water is still way to deep and to go much further would put me into the thick stuff that I want to catch deer moving into and out of during the day.

So, off comes the rubber boots. Toss them across to the other side. Then off with the wool pants and longjohns and socks. Crossed the the creek, water just above my knees. Wasn't so bad when in the water but cold enough when I got out that I worried I might never be able to urinate ever again.   :scared:  Wiped off the excess water with my pants and then put all my clothes back on.

It eventually got up into the 50s before the day was over and luckily climbing the tree got my blood flowing again and I did not get too cold before it warmed up. I remember sitting in the tree till it was pitch black dark hoping the water had gone down some during the day. It had not. Rinse and repeat.

Oh, I saw NOTHING the whole day.

I was at the hospital after have kidney stones blasted and had stints put in. My buddy and I had plans to go turkey hunting in Oklahoma and I was'nt going to let that ruin the trip. So I had him pick me up and take me to the house to load up my things. We go and I had to stop and rest and throw up about every 100 yards. On day 3 I could'nt take it anymore. Now we have been hunting buddies for 27 years and I tell Randy your gonna have to pull out these stints so I can hunt for a few more days. I talk him into it and he pulled them out. It made it better but was not real smart I might add. Could of heard me scream all the way to Kansas. I did get a turkey that trip.

Little hard to see after 37 years but this scar is the result of an old style quickie quiver.

I was standing along a road on Skyline Mgt Area in Alabama talking to a friend who was driving by. I had one recurve tip resting on the toe of my boot and was holding the other tip with my hands while I rested or the bow like a walking stick.

As my friend left I slid my hand quickly down the bow limb to grab the grip without looking or thinking about the quickie quiver full of arrows tipped with razor sharp broadheads.

The finger in the picture was cut to the bone in a millisecond.  Fortunately the friend who was leaving saw my plight, backed up, loaded me up and drove to a local doctor to get my finger patched up.

I still get an old bow in my shop occasionally with one of those dang quivers attached. I always pull the quiver off and commit it to the trash immediately to prevent some unsuspecting newbie from falling victim to a handful of broadheads like I once did.

Crawled into a hole with 7 javelina that were very upset - popping jaws, etc.  I had wounded one and was trying to get him out.  Didn't know there were 7 in the little cave.

Stepped on a copperhead and reacted instinctively without any forethought at all. I used my Howard Hill Wesley Special as a war club on the snake. Fortunately, I wasn't bitten and the bow wasn't broken. The copperhead didn't make out so good, though. The greatest lesson learned was that, with proper motivation, I have a pretty good vertical jump.

Bugled in a raghorn bull with my 86 toyota pickup truck horn. Pulled into where I was going to camp. It was muddy muddy and mud grabbed tores. spun steering wheel, hand hit horn, bull bugled off in the trees. I jumped out: bow was in back of truck, I was not geared up in anyway but got arm guard and tab on when raghorn came running out of trees: stood about 18 yrds away broadside and in the time it took me to think: He is not as big as the one I shot last year, he whirled and ran away. Never ever pass up on a gift bull. I coulda backed my truck up to him and loaded him whole.

On my very 1st traditional bow hunt I was using an old borrowed Carlton bow with quickee quiver.

I loved taking the scenic way home from work and over the time span of a couple of weeks I had been seeing a flock of turkeys moving through the same area at the same time every day,so I decided that I was going to give them a try.

I got there early, made a little hide in a weed patch by the creek. The plan was let them cross the creek and take my shot as they walked up the other side so if I missed I would be able to recover my arrow(s).

The plan was working out great!

I let 3 or 4 of them cross and start up the bank before I made my 1st shot. Dang it! I missed and not taking my eyes off the birds I pulled out the next arrow and slid it over the bow. Something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye but I was intent on making sure I never took my eyes off the birds.

I proceeded to try to nock my arrow without looking. I was getting frustrated because I couldn't find the string no matter how hard I tried.

I gave up and looked so I could get the arrow on the string before the last of the flock made it out of range.

There wasn't a string on my bow, it dawned on me what happened. In the process of getting my arrow up to the bow I ran that razor sharp broadhead across my string cutting it and what I had seen earlier was my wool string silencer flying through the air.

I was so mad I jumped up and screamed at the turkeys.

We both left the field...lol

God bless,Mudd

PS: I did retrieve my arrow and by the time I got back to my truck I was laughing about it.
