I spent this morning stump huntin. At 8:30 when I left the house it was 27 degrees and there was a very light dusting of snow on the ground. This has been an unusual Winter. It's January 10 and there is no snow to speak of. Not so good for rabbit hunting but when it comes to stumpin it's perfect. I made my way down into my favorite hunting area and started looking for targets of opportunity. I was being a little pickey about what I wanted to shoot and I was looking for sheds as well so I hadn't taken any shots. While scanning the area in front of me for targets some movement caught my eye. A deer! Then another one and another until I could see six of them. Nice to see they survived the hunting season. Later on I caught a glimps of a Fisher Cat as he was headed for a less crowded area. I did put a hurtin on quite a few stumps today. I do enjoy stumpin. It's free (unless you bust an arrow). It helps maintain your woods skills and it's just plain fun!

Tools used today. The haversack I purchased in an Army/Navy store for about $4. Secured a plastic tube to one side that holds 4 arrows nicely.

The point is a simple blunt with a wing nut. Haven't buried one yet.

Nice pics, and sweet Bama Hunter. That bag/quiver you made is a great idea. I'll have to modify one of mine like that.
Thanks for sharing!

Looks like you had a great time. Ditto on the bag/quiver combination. Do you have a close up pic of it?
-
It don't get much better than that.

I know how good that feels to get away for a little while and just wander around in the woods shooting stumps, no pressure like a hunt. Gotta get out there soon...
Nice pics!

Here's a pic of the bag up close. Just a simple canvas military surplus.

Here it is turned inside out. I sewed a couple of 1" stretchy stuff to the bag. These hold the tube in place.
Very inexpensive and it works good!

Love stumpin' also. You inspired me to get out this weekend of the snow doesn't come tomorrow.

Kind of unusual weather for this time of year. Way to take advantage of it.
Nothing more relaxing than some leisurely stumping.

It's hard to beat stumpin'! I really like your wing nut behind the blunt idea. Great pictures and a nice way to carry a few arrows in your haversack with arrow tube. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the close up pics of your bag. That is a simple and effective way to carry stumpin' arrows. I have to try the wing nut idea, too. Thanks again for sharing your handi-work!

Went out again today. Temps were in the mid thirtys and it had snowed last night leaving about 2-3 inches. Figured I would cut a lot of deer tracks...Wrong! I did see lots of coyote tracks. Gonna have to sit in a stand one evening and try calling em in.

These were the only deer tracks I saw. Right where I park...Go figure!
