I shot wood arrows for many years and am getting back into them after using carbon for a while. I can't remember if it makes a differance if the grain on the shaft should be perpendicular to the string on paralel, does it matter?
thanks
I run the grain horizonal to the string.....

The grain should be perpendicular to the string.
With a self nock this gives the most strength and keeps the string from splitting the wood. Plastic nocks don't have this issue but in this orientation the shaft is also against the riser in the same way that the spine is measured.

perpendicular
Perpendicular for sure. You want the stiffest part of the shaft against the riser. Also, make sure the feathered "points" of the grain are pointing away from the nock ends on the top of the shafts....

That is the other part of installing a nock, so you don't have wood coming out of your arm - LOL!
Zackly!
That is also the orientation for spine deflection, so that is what you want on the bow to be accurate in starting to tune wood shafts.
I too have been looking into going back to wood arrows. I certainly appreciate this input also!
YEP Thats it!
