Here in western Massachusetts we have a huge coyote problem, hence the reason for no deer. My questions are for those that have hunted these critters from a pop up blind and, have been successful doing so.
Here is what I have for a scenario, large fields surrounded by mixed hardwood. I have a double bull blind that I can't leave out for fear of theft, I already had one stolen.
The land is private so there should be no other hunters on it. Just the owners that walk their own dogs. They only allow me to bowhunt.
I know there are yotes there I just saw a pack of three today. Please let's here some ideas. Glen
I would do some scouting and find an area along a fields edge with good sign. I would build a natural blind in the brush along the field in that area, use a decoy so they can have something to look at and a matched distress call. Rite at shooting light start calling. I'm not a fan of coyote hunting in blinds, I like it to look as natural as possible. Its not an easy task taking one with a bow, I myself have yet to do it but got em close. good luck
Thank for the sugestions Brian, I nomally would build a ground blind but the field edges are small new growth, no large trees that I could use as back cover. If I did build a ground blind I'm sure it would stick out as much as a pop up and wouldnt give me any kind of scent control.
This is a very difficult area to hunt because of the sparse cover. I want to keep it as Mobil as possible to keep them at a disadvantage . Oh and a ghilli suit is out of the question at this time, I wouldn't have enought time to get proficient shooting from it and I already own the blind.
What kind of calls do you guys use? I have a rabbit in distress mouth call already. Or should I just throw a turkey decoy out there and keep quiet?
I live in south eastern Ma. I haven't shot one but have pulled them in. I put out some freezer burned meat for the critters to take care of and put a trail cam on it. Racoons, reds, greys and then the coyotes found it. They dominated and it was gone quickly after that. Everything else came at night but the yotes came in early morning. Did it several times and the coyotes always came on camera in the morning for some reason.
Cant help you on the blind set up,I have NO luck bowhunting them.... they pick me off at 150 yards in full camo motionless.
Oh, my buddy once set a piece of rabbit fur tied to a small sapling on the field edge. He ran fishing line to it to his spot and often pulled the sapling making the fur jump around while calling. He has quite a few skins hanging in his garage. I guess it took the attention off him and onto the fur flailing around.
I never tried it but it sounds good.
The rabbit call you have will work fine. The rabbit fur on the string trick works good like Yornoc said, or a couple squirrel tails tied together will get em in to. They are tuff to get with a bow no doubt about it. Most of them are taken by luck while deer hunting.
Good luck,you got your work cut out for you getting them in bow range.I've killed 86 in the last twenty years but only three with my bow.If your going to call them try a electronic caller with a remote control,if you use a mouth blown call with-out good cover I think your wasting your time.Coyotes are smart,.its hard to fool them once,it will never happen twice.They learn quick.
