Having LOADS of fun with this one.....I am up next month for my Silvertip!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is MY dream bow...8 years in the making. I've had Tips made since then, but out of standard riser materials due to high poundage.
I've been sitting on this piece of cocobolo for 8 years now.
And hooked up with Idahocurt here on tradgang for veneers.(do yourself a favor and get ahold of this guy!) Did the snakeskin dealings myself of course.
Heres what these photos will turn into : A 66", yes I said 66", takedown recurve from Dave. With Beth's help I finally got him to agree to do this length for me! Two sets of limbs. One bocote, one highly figured yew...not the yew seen in pic, but similar as it is being cut as we speak from a crazy tree.
The rest will come in a month or so, Oh my God I am squirming in my seat!

Not even my bow....but very much looking forward to it!!! It will be stunning!
Shuweeee some fine parts there David.
Congrats David, you have really found some incredible Cocobolo.
The Bocote veneers are exceptional as well!
I can't wait to see it done with your skins on.
I immagine you'll skin the Yew limbs!
YESSIR FELIX!!
You mean I have to wait for a month,SERIOUSLY?
I am not gonna be able to sleep!! :scared:
This is going to be great! Can't wait!!
I think it will be ugly...you better send it to me so it can be disposed of properly. I will make sure nobody will see it and you won't have to feel embarrassed. :scared:  ...... In all honesty I think it will be a thing of beauty..........
That is going to make one fantastic looking bow.
Love that cocobolo! Did you notice that the best grain is on the LEFT side? It would be a shame to cut a sight window in that area for an ole RH bow. :p
wow that stuff looks great, these are the best shooting bows on the market that I have come across!!!
WOW great looking riser block there!
This is going to be a very special bow! Can't wait to see it finished.
That piece of cocobolo is phenomenal.....wow, that will be an incredible looking bow. Cant wait!!
P.S. this cocobolo is 52" long by 4 1/2 by 2!
Nice Bull Snake skins. Can't wait to see that alone let alone the whole bow!
Good looking lumber. Should make a nice bow.
David, that will be one beautiful bow when it is finished! By the way, where did you get your Cocobolo?
is their any reason why you choose 66'? just curious, do you have a really long draw lenght or something?
Dan, Gilmer wood company.
Matthew, I shot olympic style for years with 68-70 inch bows. I draw 29, but have experienced longer bows are so much easier to draw and hold for me. I can draw and anchor a 66" bow @ 55# much easier and hold longer waiting for a shot than shorter bows of the same weight. You won't see any 60" recurves in Olympic competition.
Pretty much adapting my olympic style shooting background blended with all my years of hunting condition shooting for my personal ultimate length bow.
Awesome Dave, Just Awesome!! I cannot wait to see that riser!! :clapper: :coffee:
Where did ya find that specimen and what does something like that cost? (if ya don't mind sharing!)
I got some Cocobolo at Woodcraft a couple of months ago but it didn't have that sweet grain. It was 30 or 35 dollars for a 1 inch thick, 3 inch wide, 24 inch long. But thats enough to get at least two longbow risers out of it.
Some very beautiful wood there should make a gem of a bow.
This is going to be some really nice eyecandy :coffee:
Dave that is one awesome piece of Cocobolo, it will look great with your skins.
Congrats!!! Like others, I am anxious to see the finished product. Kudo's to Dave and Beth, the best in the business!!
That's going to be one sweet bow, can't wait for pics!
Wow! That's amazing! Can't wait to see the bow!
I shot a 66" drifter before and I can say he's right. picture the smoothness of a 66" longbow with the cast of a recurve..
anyway this bow is going to be sweet looking!
David~ that is going to be an incredible looking bow. Did you get the bocote from IdahoCurt?
Yessir, Curt is my go to guy for lams! The yew also.
That is going to be SWEET cannot wait to see the finished product. I have to quit looking at these Schafer threads.
Cocobolo with yew limbs is my favorite combo :bigsmyl: Had Dave make me one a few years back!!

The wood arrives today and he's starting the bow. That year plus wait went by SLOOOOWWWWWWW.
MAN I'm excited.
Dave,I can understand you! Also mine woods are arrived this week but it takes 2 months for drying.
:campfire:
This will be stunning. Can't wait to see the final product!!
Its complete, just waiting for the bow to be shipped!
This is going to be sweet! Looking forward to the pics!
David, the problem is maybe Dave,he doesn't want to part with the bow he made,so he keeps them for quite a few time! :biglaugh:
Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Those veneers are beautiful.
:campfire: :archer2:

David, I guess I am missing something here. Why are you using fancy yew veneers and then snaking them. You could use straight grain yew and have an even smoother limb action.
The combinations you have going are really nice. I built Andy Cooper a longbow with that kind of cocabola. You can look up the thread and see what it will look like finished if you wish.
Sad thing is I finally ran out of it and have not been able to find any more of that quality.
God bless you, Steve
Not answering for David here, but....
I did a very deluxe recurve from the Silvertip shop a few years ago, and had it skinned with the finest set of copperheads I've personally ever seen. I told Dave he could use anything he wanted under the skins, and use quilted sapele on the belly. He advised me to go with the good veneers under the snake. His rationale was that this bow might be alive in 50 years, and somebody might want the skins off the bow. Would be a shame to have very plain veneers there.
Steve, to be honest, I did not know that a veneer could effect bow performance, I thought totally cosmetic. BUT, I did have non figured yew put on the backs under the skin to bring out the okeetee rats brilliant colors without covering a great piece of yew.
Kevin, I never thought of that either. I always buy a bow thinking it will be mine forever, but that hardly ever happens. Good point.
Mine will unfortunately have plain veneers under the skins... :banghead:
Okay Everybody, the bow is here. I have to make antler limb bolts for it, but I wont make you wait for that!
It came out phenominal. It has standard 64" limbs with a longer riser custom made to get a 66" bow. I have a disk injury right now and should not do anything. BUT, I strung it and drew it back, I'm stupid but you would have done it too...... SMOOOOOTH as silk, just as I envisioned.
I'll post pics tonight, under the same title but a new post. Wait till you see it, I hope you all appreciate it as much as I do.
Dave and Beth were great once again! This was a very careful project, and they are quite a team.
:coffee:
David,I am glad you get it!

Waiting! :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:
