Title: My first cottontail with a recurve!
Post by: treetoppredator on January 04, 2012, 08:46:00 PM
This year was my first year hunting with all trad. bows, and man it has been great!  In the first 3 weeks of deer season I had numerous  shot opportunties, I managed to tag two yearling does and a 1.5 year old 7 point!  I also missed 3 other does.  It has been very slow since Thanksgiving and I've hunted very hard, i've seen deer just no opportunities to loose another arrow!
I've been looking to do some small game hunting with my recurve all year now and also just antsy to get out there with the bow in hand, but tonight I finally got to it!  Went out after rabbits with my recurve, I  loosed 5 arrows at 6 different rabbits and finally connected on my first ever cottontail with a bow!

Also I've been reading about all the small game heads on the forum so I decided to put a few together for myself! Too bad I didn't get the rabbit with this head!

Nice shooting, but be careful, shining rabbits is illegal in most states!

Looks like an Adder.  We have them in our local shop. A regular target point usually precedes it.   Good device

Great idea. Adder and wing nut. Got to try that. Good shot on the rabbit.

All the pieces of the small game head above are 8/32".
-wingnut
-1.25"flathead screw
-small hexhead nut(came with the screws)
-adder
The wingnut was screwed all the way to the top of 1.25" flathead screw. Then I took the small nut that came with the screws, and  put it up inside the recessed bottom of the adder. Next I used needle nose pliers to crimp the adder tightly onto the nut. Last, screw the nut/adder combo up tightly against the bottom of the wingnut.
Not complicated at all, I'm just not very good at putting the steps into words.

in the description it says 7-8" diameter, it actually means 7/8". You might be able to find a sponsor that sells them, that was just the first link I found

This was posted by an other member here(his name slips my memory)

QuoteSupplies to make 4 heads cost a whopping 3.50 at Home Depot so where I come from, that's less than a buck a head.

4 8 x 32 x 1.5" machine screws with nuts - .97

4 threaded drywall anchor thingamajigs - .97

1 package of rubber washers - 1.59

Below is what I came up with. Configured as shown, the head weighs just about 150 grains. You could add or take away washers, nuts or even screw length to get the exact weight you are looking for.
