Title: Death Passed Their Way
Post by: Wannabe1 on January 04, 2012, 04:42:00 AM
"Death Passed Their Way"

Quietly into the forest, I boldly go
Armed with arrows and my trusty ole bow
The birds and the squirrels playing in the trees
Chattering and laughing among the fall leaves
Silently I pass and raise no alarm
The branches gently touch, then slide from my arm
Eyes to the path and the tracks that I follow
Lead to the trophy that hides in the hollow
Heart beating loudly, yet not to be heard
The excitement of the hunt cannot be put in word
When I see across the hollow, the little buck deer
Munching the clover, not knowing deaths near
I go to one knee, as if in slow motion
The bow and the arrow respond with devotion
The little buck deer, has now passed away
And I give thanks to the Great Spirit, for the gift of this day!
With trophy upon shoulder, I'm now homeward bound
And slip from the forest with nary a sound
Leaving the birds and the squirrels chattering away
Never knowing that death had just passed their way.........TW

Poetry has most always been hard for me, in all aspects. However, I love the rhythm, flow, and sense of this one. Fine job IMO

Thank you for the great comments! Many of you have been reading my stuff for a while now so, I felt it was time for another. One day, I may put together a little book for reading while in the field.   :D

Well said, it invokes feeling and memories. Can't get any better than that. You should put a book together. Best to you. Bob

I like it!  It reminds me of "A Turkey Hunter's Prayer" that I have framed in my office.  It was given to me by a family friend, and written by his father, Larry Hearn.  It goes like this:

"Lord, please deliver me, at least once more, to Your grand theatre and serene creation of the deep forest and play again Your golden record of time. Let Your orchestra of age old instruments keep cadence with the progress of a new day from the inspiring hues of the East to the disappearing kaleidoscope westward bound. Stimulate my fibers again with Your omnipotent wealth. Let me smell the breath of life, drink from the fountains of eternity, and see again the presentation of 'The Oldest and The Newest'.

And just one more favor Lord, at the end of the trail, let Your wildest and most majestic creation signal me home."
