Do it in the winter for one. Chiggers suck...and hurt!
But I learned several years ago, if not decades ago, how to go through briars easily and without too many pricks on your skin.
If you have one (two are better) small manageable log(s) or landscape timber(s) you can take it and drop it across the brairs. I typically use one about 8 feet long and weighing in about 30-50 pounds, depending on the wood used. (when timber companies leave there are many of these logs lying about) This will press down the briars and you can walk on the timber to the end of it. Pick it up and drop it two or three times to widen your path. Walk the log as you progress. Leap frogging the log to beat down the brairs. Nippers or a machete help tame the creepers that hang out and over your path as you leap along.
In my area of NC we have many areas that are clear cut by timber companies. Within a year or two the briars take over. I can get through briars without too much headache or sticks from the thorns by using this method.
Now's the time to do it- Before the chiggers and ticks come back out and while we're planning next year's hunts.
I don't own an ATV, so driving over the brairs is not an option for me. I have to use the good ol' feet and boots.

I went about 100 yards yesterday in about 20 minutes. Not too bad for thick stuff. Hacking it with a machete only would've taken alot longer and more thorns to the skin.
I just take my little dachshund on a trail. He'll pull me through in less time than that :)
I once did basically the same thing but used a kayak instead of a log. In the dark no less. Don't ask why. :rolleyes:
I do plenty of blood letting and keep clothing companies in business. and for what? to see if rabbits are home :confused: :knothead:

I pulled a deer tick off me in late Nov. Our first cold snap here is now.
Maybe Ray has some insight to Hog Heaven, but my guess is it's possible. Mrch in lower SC can get some warm days.
Chiggers, briars, and pine woods, they just seem to go together
I got chigger bit just before Christmas. Almost unheard of.
I hate 'em.
