Title: Gary Davis self bow class
Post by: yukon chuck on December 30, 2011, 11:12:00 PM
Anyone here ever taken a class from Gary Davis on self bow making? I received his DVD as a Christmas gift and was amazed at the wealth of information. No doubt that the DVD is enough to get you through the process of making a bow, but I think it would be very cool to spend some one on one time with the man as well. Not sure if he does classes any more, but thought I would ask if anyone has been a part of any workshops or one on one teaching.
Thanks,
Chuck

Sorry Moderators...this should probably be on the Bowyers Bench. My mistake, and my apology. Please move if that is appropriate.

Gary has been known to show up in places like the Tennessee Classic or the MoBoJam and spend all of his time and energy showing folks how it's done.

Great man and excellent teacher BTW.

Here is a tip that will help when working with Gary: Diet Dr. Pepper....lol

The man has two passions, building and teaching others to build awesome Osage Orange bows and Diet Dr. Pepper...lol

God bless,Mudd

PS: Have a great 2012!!!!

Hi Chuck,

For years Gary taught selfbow classes for the Michigan Longbow Association at the Great Lakes Longbow Invitational.  However, this year was the first year he didn't, opting to set up a booth and sell his DVD instead.  It is my understanding that he produced the DVD because he wanted to sort of retire from giving the workshops.  Maybe he's just cutting back, but still plans on doing some.  If his classes are available anywhere, I recommend trying to take one.  I've never heard anything but great things.

Mudd was correect about the Tenn. Classic. Gary has tought folks at every Classic I've been to. You buy a stave from Gary and he helps you build a bow with it. If you come to the Classic there will be other bowyers to help you with your new bow also.
And, don't forget the Dr Pepper!

I sat in on one of his workshops a couple years ago at the GLLI, got there too late to start a bow. He is a deep well of knowledge and  very entertaining to boot. Great experience if you can catch one of his workshops.

I have attended the classes at his home for a couple years and he is one of the best teachers in selfbow making. Gary no lomger gives the classes at his home and as stated above has kinda retired from that aspect of the business. He still makes and sells rough out bow staves and also snake skins. He still does the booth on selfbows at Kzoo and if you go there he can give more info on what is going on. There is a guy in Perry that gives classes but I dont know him or have been there.
