Title: And he shall be known as WEBER
Post by: swampdrummer on December 30, 2011, 08:39:00 PM
With this being the last weekend for deer in South Florida I needed to put some things aside and get my butt in a stand. Checked my game cameras and 2 of the 3 were only showing night time movement. The third camera, I somehow forgot to put a SD card in last weekend! The wind was right for the stand near the game cam with no card in it so I figured that was my best bet. Sure didn't have much going on anywhere else.
Right at dark I had a whole passel of hogs come in. The sow was too skinny, The boar was too big. But this one was juuuust right   :D

If I have to tell the truth I missed the big boar and he took off, taking the sow with him. But about 8 or 10 little shoats stuck around.Really hard to pick a spot when theres a bunch of little critters mingling around together and its just about too dark to see much of anything.
I picked one that had a little color on him right about where I wanted to hit him and let her fly.
Little guy fell over right there and was dead in less than 30 seconds. Clipped the liver. one lung and center punched the heart. Tell me I ain't gooo, ahhh I mean lucky!   :p    :p

Hey Brad,
Nice shot.... good to see someone else is willing to shoot the tender meat when hunting.

My last doe weighed in at a whopping 55.8 lbs.    :D

Maybe we should get together for a hunt. I'll bet between the 2 of us we may just kill enough critters to break 100 lbs.     :archer:

Considering how small the pig is you must have meant that you picked a small small spot, GOOD SHOOTING!

Thanks guys. Was an end to a looong dry streak.
Ben, That bookshelf is a monstrosity. 10'X8'. We don't watch any TV with the exception of an occasional movie via netflix or amazon so reading is what we do.
Gator, Same bow. Its not going anywhere. I must have been suffering from temporary insanity when I put her up for sale.
Bawana, Yes, lets hunt and see how small we can go LOL When I was stationed at Fort Riley Kansas way back when I held the record for one year for the smallest deer killed on post. Thinking it was 37# gutted. And thats in the land of the 300# deer!
Weber is going to get smoked next weekend when my folks are down from SC. but for now.

Soooooo do you dip em in boiling water and then scrape the bristles off and cook him whole? Or do you cut him up and cook him parts?

God bless you all and congrats, Steve

Thanks again folks.
Sixby, I didn't do the dip and scrape on this one. Its a lot of trouble and stinks to high heaven!
I just skinned him out and gutted. He will be put on the grill with indirect heat and slow cooked. I've done a couple this way and they turn out pretty good

don't take this the wrong way because I don't know but when your hunting hogs is shooting the smaller ones better eating and do other hunters frown on it? when I was at ray hammonds I battled with the thoughts on what is fair game and what isn't I was nervous about shooting something too small,,same reason I don't go on trophy hunts I guess because I can't determine antler size and heard its a bad deal for shooting something small.

I know people around here have a problem with shooting small does and if its really small but say without spots its joke time.

not just swampdrummer but you other regular hog hunters, whats the state of mind out there among you guys.

oh and swamp nice shot and if I was there I'd love to sample some of that..

Ted,
Florida use to have a minimum size of 15" at shoulder. But that was years ago. Now there is no size limit, if it can walk you can shoot it. There is a very good reason for this, they breed to damn fast and are destroying habitat.
The trophy hunters can wait for the big ones if they want. I've shot more than my share of them. These days I mainly hunt for meat, and those little ones are GOOD EATS!

No size limit and I rarely shoot anything bigger than 60-80 pounds. Like Bawana. I've taken enough big ones that I just don't feel the need. 80 pounds on down just eat better and ones like weber here are so tender if they are cooked right that you don't even need a knife.
Bawana is right as well in the fact that they breed like rats. They are sexually mature at six months old and breed something like 4 times a year with litters of up to 10 piglets. You can see how it can get out of hand quickly.

This little guy feed four adults with enough leftover for a couple of sandwiches tomorrow! Fresh sweet corn and sweet potatoes and I'm still stuffed!
