First a sincere Thank You to Steve Hohensee and Dan Russell to motivate this...
After 2 plus years of being a complete cheap arse, I just booked 2 weeks (August) on sun (and rain) soaked Kauai for our family (Wife boys and I) vacation and my wife told me to get lost on the Na Pali Coast mountains for 3-4 days to hunt goats/pigs along with sleeping in the most beautiful place on the planet under the stars, and leave them to explore the island.
What a great way to end the year, and start the new one, on a positve note.
So far, traveling with me on this trip will be my Two Tracks Ambush 1 piece recurve and some home grown Motor City Macheties, stuffed in my hard sided golf club case. Best part is I can leave the wool clothes at home. Next on the agenda is purchasing some Sitka Gear ascend pants and core long sleve top. Anybody have some 34-36" pants and XL tops they care to part with (sell)?
Now, back to being a cheap arse to fund the rest of it.
-
Way to make it happen, I hope its all you expect Mike you earned it.
-
Sound like a great time! Have fun!
-
Hope we get some REAL BIKINI pics with this one. :goldtooth:
Have a good time and good luck to ya.

Awesome! I'm looking at tickets for my honeymoon right now for Hawaii. Not cheap but it looks like an awesome place.

Best place we have found each time we travel to the islands (this will be our 3rd time back) is Expedia.com The more you book, the cheaper it is. Air/Hotel/Car is only $10 more than airflight only.
-
Hawk22, if you get an Alaska airlines credit card you can get a companion airfare for $99. Takes a little of the bit out. My wife and I upgraded to first class and it was well worth it. If yjou have a layover in Seattle you can use the Alaska airlines hospitality room free with first class airfare.

Congrats and good luck! Looking forward to a trip report. It's definitely high on my list of trips right now as well.

You're gonna have a great time Mike. be warned, bowhunting in warm places is highly addictive!
-
Good luck!
More of a quantity over quality area, IMO.
Get your hunter safety stuff dialed in wayyyy early...

Hey Mike...good for you. I love the Islands. Good luck to you. Now, let me point out that I am sometimes amazed by the humility shown by fellow Trad Gangers. DHR posted a short and sweet message, but failed to mention that he has an article in this months TBM, that I just got in the mail today. Great article and great photos, by one of our own. And, imagine this...it is about the very trip that you just booked Mike. I suggest that it would be a good read for you in preparation for your trip. Nice job DHR, and it's OK to toot your own horn once in a while.
And Mike, I'd like to hear more about your plans...maybe we can talk at the MLA banquet.
Best regards,
Chuck

Or come up for a bit. Join me in the Motor City Machete shop. It's just a couple miles north.
If I don't see you in Kzoo, I will see you at the Banquet for sure.
-
I will be at the Motor City Machete shop about 8 tomorrow morning...sipping Kona coffee and getting the whole scoop.
Looking forward to your trip Mike and the next one
Chuck--I need to know more about your handle. I spent two of the best weeks of my life up there.
-
See you then.
-
thats awesome,, when I went I couldn't connect with anyone,, and to think I used to send my bands punk CD's to Steve Hohensee years ago and he never helps me out with Hawaii connections >>>---> Gee thanks Steve!
Ha ha ha 8^)

Steve O...
I wish my handle had something to do with the Yukon. My brother and a good friend back in New Jersey started calling me Yukon because of my need to be in the outdoors, and my comfort level in the woods and on the streams. They started calling me Yukon Cornelius, and that got shortened to just Yukon, which is what they call me now. When I signed up for Trad Gang, I just used it as my handle. Sorry, wish it was a better story.

Well, then it should be inspiration
I will be at Kzoo and the Longbow banquet too...
-
Awesome, so how you do it, go hunting somewhere the wife and kids are distracted!
-
Uummm, I think I may need to be along on this field testing operation just to watch the Ambush under the warm, sunny, pig and goat filled conditions that Hawaii has to offer. And maybe look for that "local" archery team Mark mentioned above.
Sounds great Mike, I really hope you and the Family have a great Time AND, I really do wish I was going with you.
Maybe I will get to go to Canada for a BEAR HUNT :saywhat: :wavey:

Have a nice trip! :)

Tajue17? WT-heck? What were you before, "Oldschool"? This is REALLY wired but I was just wondering just YESTERDAY what happened to you! BTW, you only PROMISED to send me a CD, just like archery gotta follow-thru! Good to see you are still around.
BTW, MV, Kauai? Why would you wanna go THERE?! ; ^ )

The one picture of you overlooking the scenery on the PBS site was the final straw Steve. I can remember some awesome sites over there, but only from a distance. It never crossed my mind to hunt there, only fish. Seeing that picture told me I too can do that, so I told my wife it would be foolish to spend a bunch more money for me to island hop from Maui and rent a car. So we decided to spend the whole trip on Kauai. She really didn't care, it was more me convincing myself it was the best thing to do, so to that I can say thank you for the motivational threads you have posted.

Mike,
Ascent pants will be perfect for Hawaii, but wouldn't you be more comfortable in your loin cloth and a pair of these?

Loin cloth??? I was planning on going "Natural". Those things would kill my feet. My physical therapist wore those, and all I could do was think how funny he looked wearing them.

Mike make sure you have proof of completing a Hunter Safety Course. Without it you will not get a License. I took the course back in the 60's and no longer have proof. All the states here grandfather license purchase since I have an active license. Good Luck

It's a little place in South East Michigan that is still producing a fine product...Douglas Fir wood arrows. For a display of the finest ones to come out the door, you will need to head to the PBS banquet in March 2012. I promise you that there will be something you never imagined possible/feasible in an arrow build, plus another set with what I consider the best looking arrows I have ever produced. Those will be my donation to the 3 arrow contest.
There have only been 2 guys besides myself who have seen them, and as of this morning, they are all boxed up an placed in the vault awaiting the drop off with the post office. I know, huge mistake leaving them to the care of the US Post office, but it would be tough to drive them out there and get back in a weekend. :biglaugh:

"For a display of the finest ones to come out the door, you will need to head to the PBS banquet in March 2012."
I'll be there!
-
Well, your gonna have to wait till then, and no drilling Steve O. I had security hold onto his camera until he left the property and at his age, the memory isn't all there, so I feel safe knowing it is a good guarded secret.

Mike:
You sure married well...I have been to the Islands a few times but never granted even a day to hunt while there. I have hiked the Denali Coast and seen the goats…it is one beautiful place to be and can only imagine hunt too. Given the loooooong flight, two weeks or more is the way to go. I am sure you’ll have fun and score!
-
You got it DHR...I've been enjoying the occasional article from you in TBM. Nicely written, well thought and nice photos too. Keep up the good work.

Spent a lot of time on the north shore, prolly second best waves in the world, almost drowned twice but hey I was 19yrs old and having the time of my life,so I thought. Have fun and good huntin!
Heres a sad thought,I turned down duty on an ice breaker in Alaska,What was I thinkin! More about bikinis than bow huntin thats forsure! sure! :banghead: :banghead:

Here's a pretty extensive write up on hunting the Hawaiian Islands for "howleys".
Ted, you still have extra copies of the OLD cd?
