I am wanting to build a Longbow for a friends wife. She was born in Alaska and has a fondness for the place so I thought it would be nice if I would incorporate something Alaskan into it. I'm thinking tip and riser overlays. Any ideas on what and how I can obtain it? Thanks, David

Contact a member from Alaska and see if they have any connections with the Alaskan people. I know Alaskan's can sell a certain amount of items we cant buy, such as seal skin. Maybe they can sell you some walrus tusk or whale bone.
-
Also check with the guys from Alaskan bow hunting supplies. They are sponsors and are located in the sponsor banner up top.
-
Let me know what sizes of overlays you are hoping for and I might be able to help you out. I may have a couple possibilities depending on sizes.
-
what area is She from? You could paint or carve a small totem in the handle, or paint it on the limbs.
-
If you could get mammoth ivory that would be cool. In the mid 80s you could buy it in local stores.
Moose or caribou antler tips?
Beaver tail from a local trapper up there?
Musk Ox fur silencers?
Several ways to incorporate it into your build.

If you let me know what type of item you are thinking of, I may be able to help. I traveled around a lot as a trooper for 20, and my current job involves the same type of travel. I also have some legal ivory (ancient) that I have used for knives. Give me an idea.

Art work on the bow

Great ideas given.
Nothing says "Alaska" more than things like Dall sheep horn, moose antler, grizzly claw(s), mammoth ivory, gold nuggets, etc.
-
how about the alaska state quarter in the riser.along with some sealskin rest
-
Birch veneers. And along with the other things mentioned, baleen.

Dropped it in the mail today. Should be more than enough for tips and maybe an inlay.

If you can use an Alaskan (Wrangell) garnet, I could send you a few...see link below for image.
Maybe inlaid in the riser?
