Title: Commerative Toelke Lynx Thread? Lets see em!
Post by: Chromebuck on December 28, 2011, 01:41:00 PM
All of us that shoot a Lynx know just how attached we seem to have become not only to the bow, but the man behind the bow!  I thought I would never give up my Whips; then I ordered a Lynx.

To Dan Toelke of Toelke Traditional Archery(no longer Montana bows)for his spiritual, personal, and professional guidance he so openly shares with us all.  Hats off to you sir!

Here's my Lynx while elk hunting the Missouri Breaks this fall.
I also have a set of juniper veneered "dress" limbs in the same weight and length as these black glass "work" limbs.    :)

JV,

Here is one from the old Montana Bows current inventory.

Here is Tim's new Lynx.  Hope you don't mind me swiping this beauty bro!
And another with very cool myrtle vaneers and two set of limbs.

I'm a longbow guy, but I think Dan and most of his following really think his recurve limbs offer the best attributes.

Here's a few more photo's of my new Lynx.  Riser woods are Pau Ferro, Ebony and some black micarta for mass weight. Limb veneers are juniper.

A real sweetheart!

Yep, I love mine too.  I have three sets of matching limbs.  Longbow for elk, recurve for deer and antelope, and a light longbow set for winter league.  Can't say enough for how well I shoot that bow!

I don't have and set shots but here are couple harvest photos from this fall.

Limbskins on this shot because elk hunting is hard on the finish.  :)

What is the difference between the Lynx Recurve and the Toelke Curlew recurves ?

Longstick,
That would be a great question for Dan to have an accurate answer, but I in my estimation, the Curlew has a little bit larger riser, different limb pad angles, and I believe will only accept recurve limbs. The Lynx has shallower limb pads, a little slimmer riser and will accept longbow or recurve limbs.
Hope this helps some, but a call or e-mail to Dan will answer all your questions.
Ron

That is some great workmanship and he consistenly has the most amazing myrtle! And he makes the most truly customized bow of the 20 or so bowyers I have played around with. If the option is not on his website ask, he can probably do it.

Love my Toelke's (but I'm whipped not Lynxed)
Shot 4 Chukars yesterday with Ophelia (my newest whip).

KY-Jeff,

My riser is cocobolo with an accent(1/8" thick) of micarta, which is hardly visible, then a thick piece of ebony and overlays of alternating cocobola and ebony in the medium low grip.  Really a neat combo and at first seemed very inanimate but has become extremely figured and sureal with little time(6-8 months).  As Dan said it would.  Should be a real eyepopper by time my son owns it!  It's amazing to me how these woods oxidize and beautify with age.

Ok, without going into a bunch of detail I have a brief announcement to make.  Lets say, for reasons of inadequate strength I was recently over-bowed.  This was not the bowyers fault!  I've been shooting 55# limbs all summer and fall and I wanted a shorter hunting bow and thought I could step up to 57#'s.  Ordered one didn't like it and ended up trading the bow off on this site for a loss.  Not that Dan had too, but out of the blue he called and said he just redesigned his recurve limbs and to trace my riser ends onto a business cards and send them to Ronan, MT.  Dan receives the cards and calls me back.  "Juniper, Myrtle or Yew lams Keith?" Ahh...Ahh...Ahhh...Yew darkens nicely with age right? I've read it's also a great limb core material correct?  Ok!  Let's go with it.  OMG!  They are awesome!  Quite contrasting to the riser, but transitioned in beautifully with cocobola wedges.  I don't know what to say.  Dan said wait until you see the speed of these limbs.  We shot the bow lastnite and I say with complete conviction I have gone from a 64" LB to a 58" curve in the blink of an eye and am not looking back.  My LB limbs are 55# and the new recurve limbs are 52# and I'd swear they are faster and definately smoother.  I've always found the lines of the hybrids very appealing and I will continue to own and shoot hybrids, but form follows function and darn it!  My goto bow just changed again...   :banghead:

Keith,

That's pretty much my set up.  I have 52# recurve limbs and 58# and 45# lB limbs.  (I like the recurve limbs the best. )

With deer season winding down, I'll be stripping down to the #45 lb limbs for the winter to shoot league and work on form.

Jeff,

I think yours and mine are the only two risers I've seen without macarta on the back or all macarta.  A lot of people say they like the added mass of macarta, but honestly I think the two exotics I have are more dense than macarta.  I was a bit taken back by the weight at first, but quickly grew to love it!

The recurve limbs are unreal shooters and I'm now toting a 58" bow.  Makes a huge difference in the alder patches!  I will take and post pics tonite of my new recurve.

Pat,

Your right those other pics didnt do your bow justice.  She's a peach!

Jeff,  Just read your post again and you make a comment about changing to LB limbs for league and form.  Thats interesting because lastnite while shooting my buddy and I both agreed that the recurve was much more forgiving to form, execution, and conclusion.  I was dropping my bow arm after the release and still busting balloons.  Never happen with the longbow limbs.

Do recurves encourage bad habits?  Or are longbows just more humbling?  Hmmmm...

Interesting,

Keith

You're right in my opinion.

It seems that for me, my 45# longbow takes the most attention to form.  The light draw slows it down and makes dropping your arm, short drawing, floating anchor, torqueing the string at release, etc show up more dramatically at 20yard leaque shoots.

So... its good for me.  I agree, the recurve limbs are my favorite and most accurate to shoot under hunting conditions.

That's why I have 2 sets of recurve limbs. When I originally bought my Lynx, I had a set of recurve and longbow. I really liked the way the recurve limbs shot. so Dan made me a matching set of 51# limbs only with gorgeous Juniper veneers and swapped me for the longbow limbs.

This way I have a set of black glass hunting limbs that I don't have to worry as much about while elk hunting and my fancier veneered limbs for special occasions.    :)

Nice bows guys.

Byron Ferguson sure does not agree that shooting a longbow is inherently more "demanding" than a recurve, but I sure do.  Of course, he only makes longbows so that might have a little to do with it.  He twists the limb tips by hand and points out the recurve limbs twist a little easier, accentuating shooting faults.
I think the additional handle mass of the recurve (most recurves) more than offsets any limbtip twisting.
Also, I would think Olympic shooters could shoot long bows if they want to.  But none do.
IMHO.
