Title: Wood arrows? (Owl bow)
Post by: daniel boon on December 27, 2011, 09:02:00 AM
I am thinking of trying some wood arrows on my "Owl bow"
The bow is 68" sinew backed LB,47#@28"-57#@32",and I draw it to just short of 29",so that would make it about 50#
I am shooting GT 15-35 Trad, full length, 3- 5"Shield feathers, and 375gr up front (645gr all up) Still showing slightly stiff, so 400 up front would be close?
I have no Idea about wood arrows, What type of WOOD,SPINE,LENGTH,POINT weight, should I be looking at???
THANKS

I would try a 60-65 spined cedar arrow, cut to 30 or 31" BOP with a 125 gr head for starters.  Your 5" shield cut feathers would work well.  I'm not familiar with an owl bow as far as center cut, so you may have to play alittle with the arrow to get it to fly to your liking.

As waaay coool as those Owl bows are, it just makes sense to shoot wood out of them. Got any pictures of that New Mexico piece of art?I would think that 60-65s would be a good choice, too.

Assuming a 30" arrow and that the bow is probably not cut real close to center, I would think 55-60 would probably work ok but its hard to say for sure.  60-65 could probably work also but they would need to be longer(possibly full length) and maybe a heavier point.  A test pack would be the way to go if it was in your budget.  If I wasn't sure I would order a touch on the heavy side and cut down slowly and play with point weights.  There are others that will know that bow and woodie's better than me that will hopefully chime in though.

If it is taking that much weight on a 600 spine carbon arrow, I would think more like 50-55 at 31".

I have an Owl Bow that is 60" Mesquite sinew and rawhide backed that pulls 48#@29" draw. I am shooting Whisperingwind footed hexshafts cut 30"BOP with 125 grain points which are spined at 60-65.

Thanks everyone,"Centaur" I got pics, but am a bit challenged in the POSTING department.
I think that I'll try the 60-65's full length, and go from there.

I'm much less scientific than a lot of you.  I order the spine that matches my bow, and get full length shafts.  I build arrows a few inches longer than my draw and start shooting.  If I see a lot of wobble I shorten the shaft which effectively stiffens spine.

"gringol"- That's what I thought of doing, but since it takes 400gr on 600 spine carbons 2 full length, I thought it better to ask? All my arrows are carbons, except 1 doz aluminium's that came with a Blacktail, don't know the spine.

Yes get some wood in that bow.....it is a crime to shoot carbon arrows in a self bow.  LOL

It's a self bow then it's not cut to center. I would go with under spined 45/50 or 50/55.

Something isn't adding up, I use 1535's for my 47# Kodiak, 48# Grizzly, 45# super Mag. 48", 50# Bob Lee LB, 51# Stewart. I have 175 GR. up front with a 28" arrow, which should be showing more stiff than your bow, does center or closer to center cut make that much of a difference ?

That is a very nice bow as all of them are!

Owl bows are made to be center shot by the shelf being cut and also how the string is off set toward the shelf .

OWL bows are very close to center shot so they are real forgiving of spine, especially if you shoot with a bit of a cant to the bow.  That said, 60-65 spine sounds pretty good to me.
