Have any bow only hunters out there?Thinking about going bow only for good.To many crazies out there. No fun looking threw a scope any more.More satisfaction when they are almost eye to eye.
-
Lots of bow only hunters here. Pretty much switched to bow only myself this season and 90% of my hunting is Public Land. Much more fun than hunting with a gun, you won't regret it.
-
Oh I am sure there alot of us BOW ONLY hunters out there,it has been most likely 25-30years for me.
-
Bow only here for big game. I shot 2 deer during the gun season this year with my Hill Country Wildcat LB.
I Haven't had a gun out in years. Can't say that I wouldn't get it out again for pheasants or rabbits if the mood was there but I'll probably never hunt big game with a rifle or slug gun again.
-
got rid of all my "far reachin'" guns but still use my CVA mountain rifle (from kit) during the gun season the first two days.
-
Never hunted any other way, except for ducks and coyotes. Gun hunters scare me.
-
I have been bow only all my life, in fact i have never hunted with a firearm.
-
I been bow only sense I picked up the recurve and even before that. Dont seem right carrying anything else. Killed my first with a gun, that was over twenty years ago. I've never found anything more addictive than traditional archery!!
Jason
-
Bow only for me since 2005. I did pick up a shotgun for one weekend in 2005 or 2006 to hunt bear. I haven't touched a firearm since then to hunt with.
-
What Jason said.
-
Bow only for big game. To many drunks with rifles out there for me during big game season.
-
Last buck I shot with a rifle was 1978.
I'm usually the one considered crazy while hunting with the recurve in gun season. With all the "crazies" on public land here in PA.
-
Bow only for big game waterfawl hunting with a bow is illegal most small game hunting with bow unless someone wants a culling job done
-
Except for birds behind my little Suzie...it is all bow for me. In fact I have never had a rifle tag. Been a few times with friends, but never had the tag. I don't intend on changing that anytime soon.
-
Just like wtpops, I have always been bow only....for over 50 years.
-
bow only for 14 years now all public land.
-
ME!
-
Never picked up a rifle, bow only since 1969.
-
Bow only since 1975.
-
Gave away my rifle in 1977 and never looked back .... :archer2:
-
Haven't hunted big game with a gun in 3 yrs,my friend calls me a method hunter an I believe he's right...
-
You guys are leading me in that direction with no looking back!!
-
I dont even own a deer gun anymore, traditional bow only!
-
I've undust a shotgun to train my pointer so he can get use to it(if ever I go with my dog with shotgun bird hunters),beside that:TRADBOW ONLY.
-
I would but the only way I seem to get in bow range of a deer is to carry a gun!
-
Not me, I hunt rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader and bow. Enjoy them all. It helped being a big time gun collector over the years. Now the advantage of a large gun collection is selling off the pieces a little at a time and generating lots of cash for bows and bowhunts.
-
I quit hunting with a gun in 1982. I even hunt with the longbow during rifle season. I have picked up a flintlock of 5 occasions since, on special mountain man hunts with a close friend in freezing snow covered WV on the last day of the late muzzleloader season.
-
i would like to progress to bow hunting all big game, but i love bird hunting so i would never be without a nice shotgun, and im a big predator hunter so my 222 will still get a workout, but im sure look up too the fellas that bowhunt everything, ans successfully to boot.
Merry xmas guys

Haven't gun hunted for at least 28 years for big game. Do a little fox and ground hog hunting but mainly for work.
-
Been a bow only hunter since I got out of the Navy. Trad only all my bowhunting life.
-
I love my recurves and spend the vast majority of my spare time shooting and hunting with them. But when it comes to filling the freezer, late in the season, my 1949 Remington 721 bolt action .270, or 1886 .33 Winchester are sure hard to beat. I like the sport and challenge of bowhunting in October / early November, but I was raised as a meat hunter, and as November draws to the end, with the economy the way it is, my family needs the meat. Even fried in butter and onions, unfilled tags just don't taste quite right.
-
when I shot/then bought my first trad bow, an Asbel big horn recurve, 18 years ago I was a gun hunter and had 15 rifles/shot guns. I have not shot a gun hunting since that day. I now have 2 guns, a .22 and 12ga and a dozen bows.
Joe
-
I hunted 2 times with a rifle this year and as soon as go out there I regretted not having my bow. Something changes in me when I archery hunt.
-
Bow only for me unless i am bird hunting as well as Jake said. Have killed many deer with my bow during our gun seasons.
-
I still like meat in the freezer and am not good enough yet to accomplish it by bow only.
-
Trad bow only since 1992. Dove hunt with shotgun. Love the challenge with stickbow and wood arrs.
-
Bow only for longer than I can remember, the rest just doesn't feel right.
-
bow only for life never hunted with a gun either
-
Same as Cyclic-Rivers, I would love to bow hunt only, but so far, never been close a nought to do so... maybe next year. But for me and my family, it is more important to fill the freezer, and the way to do it, as been with a gun.
-
I have not shot anything with a rifle in about 10 years. I guess that means I'm pretty much bow only.
Bisch
-
Bowhhunt for everything!!!No need for "simple sticks"...That's shooting, not hunting!!!
Be safe!!
-
bow only here. no offense intended, but it's actually odd to me that people hunt part of the year with a bow and part of the year with a gun (at least in texas). I realize the regs might dictate otherwise in some states.

I feel the same way. Do do like to take out the ole smoke pole on occasion.
-
The only guns I own are work related. That's right...I'm the POPO!! :D
-
I hunt nearly 100% with a Bow, every once in a while more like once every 2-3 years I'll get the itch to take out my Hawken for a day.
To me hunting with a bow is the best challenge & satisfaction a hunter could want.
Challenge of being skilful & stealthy enough to become part of your surroundings & be close to the animal you are going after.
Satisfaction of being able to achieve the shot at those close distances using primitive equipment couldn't get any better.
-
This year was the first time in 10 years that I hunted with a rifle. It was also the first time in 10 years I hunted somewhere other than public land. I was invited to hunt a private farm with family members during WV rifle season. I harvested a deer but it did not do much for me.
I do a lot of plinking, target shooting and handloading, but In the field, I will take a stick and string over a rifle any day.
-
Have not hunted with a gun in almost 20 years. BILL
-
I only own a handgun that I keep for self protection. Never hunted with anything but a bow since 1955.
-
I've been bow only for I believe 22 years now. I did kill a doe about 10 years ago w/ a pistol on a bet once, but that's the only time I've picked up a firearm to hunt with since making the decision. Trad only for about 8 years or so.
-
I've been recurve only for 26 years. I've never owned or shot a compound.
Brett
-
Bow only for me for big game for the past 20 years.
-
I have hunted with a 50 cal. Hawken cap/ball and killed a deer at 150 Yards back a bunch of years ago. Didn't mean much so now it's bow only.
-
Bow only here. Can't shoot a gun worth a darn and don't trust too many folks, so the emptier the woods the better.
-
I have a bunch of guns that reside in their cases, never seeing the light of day. I think the last animal I shot with a gun was a deer with a 30 30 in the early 90s. It's bows or nothing for me.
-
Bow only here. Love guns. Just don't hunt with em.
-
Bow only for me
-
Bow only here in a bow only county of NY
-
I do love to eat squirrel that has been shot in the head, so to that end I use scoped .22s.
-
I had a bow-only (big game)period from about 1984-1995. I do enjoy making a racket from time to time these days.
-
90% of my hunting is with a bow but, I still like to hunt waterfowl and crows with a shotgun. In NJ you can't take a bear with archery tackle ..YET So I take them with a muzzleloader.
-
Yep, bow only for a few years now. Not opposed to folks hunting with guns, I just don't get the rush from it I do with a bow.
-
Longbows and recurves for me for the last 10 years or so. That being said, I'll make sure my daughters can safely handle and shoot guns.
-
Personally I only hunt with a traditional bow. For some reason, I have a lot of patience when carrying one. I have no patience at all when hunting with any other weapon.
-
I'm bow only. Got all my rifle shooting itch scratched by the Army. Don't have to clean and lube my recurve!
-Jeremy :coffee:
-
I've hunted deer with a rifle once in the last 20 years or so. It was OK. Kinda loud. I still shoot (or shoot at) any coyote that gets in range of the house and keep an AR next to the back door.
For most of my life I've been a bird hunting fanatic, but not so much since my setter (and psychoanalyst) died. My wife still likes to hunt grouse with shotguns and this year I tried doing it with her with a bow and killed a fair number. One blue grouse treed and would not fly for her, she just couldn't see it, I didn't have flu flus, so I shot it with 1911.
But I'll probably not go bang for quite awhile.
-
Haven't touched my Charles Daly O/U in many years. I was recently thinking of refurbishing it though. Been bows only for at least 20 years.
-
Yep, even have a special bird bow in production now! Even working on a prototype head for hunting geese and other flying birds over/with dogs.
-
Pretty much bow only for 20 years or so, lost the thrill of whacking deer with a gun, just no challenge in it for me. Use to own a bunch of high dollar custom long range guns for coyotes and Prairie dogs but had to sell them all 10+ years ago.
I'll still pick up a shotgun every once in awhile for Quail & Dove but the last three times I went Quail hunting I did it with a bow..came home empty handed too. I swear missing them by inches is a thrill for me. My brother thinks am nuts.
-
I have not hunted with anything other than trad bows for many years. I don't like the noise of guns,I don't like the smell, I don't like how so many (myself included) are always trying to force a situation where they can shoot at game, I don't like the way some with guns immediately think they are a tough guys because they have a gun when there are mixed seasons going on, I don't like how people go out into the woods with guns and just shoot at anything and everything.
However, everyone, and I mean everyone that is not intending on harming their fellow man or property, should have a gun and know how to use it.
-
I haven't been gun hunting in about 4 years. Not saying that I would never use any other type of weapon ever again. But for now, I'm enjoying hunting with my longbow.
-
Bow only for 2 years now when hunting 4-legged creatures. I did use a shotgun earlier this year during dove season but have been strongly considering trying out hunting them with a bow for the frustration, er I mean fun, factor.
-
For big game it's been bow only since....1973. I did take 2 deer with my Flintlock back in '84 but haven't used it since. Since Bear hunting in Jersey is gun only, thinking about breaking it out again.
When my 2 buddies get together for our annual squirrel fest, we use .22's to fill the freezer in a hurry, then it's back to bowhunting them.
-
Bow only. Gun hunted once didn't enjoy the hunt. bow only for 15 years and trad only about 5 years
-
I have been bow only since i was introduced to trad hunting 4 years ago.
I sold 11 guns except for the 2 my Dad bought me when i was 9 and another one when i was 12.
I wanted to sell them both but there's just way to many memories and to many deer deer to count that i shot with one of them.

Better check em for rust and pitting. That's the best way to ruin one, storing in a closed case.
-
For deer I did the bow only thing for 5 years, but went back to shooting a gun some when my son started to tag along when was around 5 years old. He is now big enough to hunt alone, so I am real close to going all bow on the hairy stuff. I am also an avid waterfowler, so I always have shot a shotgun in the flooded timber.
-
Bow only here also!
-
Bows, and shotguns for upland. Don't even currently own a rifle.
-
All bow for me too, very happy my state now allows bow use during the gun season!
-
Sold my rifle three years ago, hadn't used it in 35 years.
The rancher I lease from keeps telling me I should use a rife if I want a deer. Still heading to my stand with my bow in hand and high expectations. Three years later no shots but there is always next time.
-
Since 1985
-
Strictly bow only for the last 25 years for all big game, small game, and upland birds ... but sometimes shotgun for ducks and geese.
-
For many years now I have only hunted with the bow. Still own firearms, just don't hunt with them. I do hunt all season possible with the bow.
-
I have only used a bow for big game hunting for over 40 years. Only use a shotgun for birds and ducks.
-
Bow only here. :archer2:
-
Trad bow only here also :archer2:
-
Thanks for the encouragement fellow gangers didn,t realize there were so many hunting bow only.
-
Trad & public land only here.
-
Don't even own a fire-arm but my kids have them.
Still will guide hunters with firearms and actually used one when both waterfowl guiding and hunting years back.
My decision is purely my perception of personal enjoyment and fulfillment. Grew up in an environment where there was a firearm parked in one corner of every room. I still have the fear that some child may be harmed and besides that I have never been fond of loud noises.

I haven't taken a rifle into the field after big game in about ten years. Nothing against it, I just love archery hunting too much. I have thrown on my orange hat and hunted rifle season with my bow though ;)
-
Nope, not me. My passions are traditional bowhunting, nitro express rifles and the odd stylish single-shot flat-shooter for some jobs.
-
Never had a compound love my trad bows .But I still like rock and roll and machineguns.Still got to shoot the varmit rifles and my six shooters.
-
I am hunting bow only, the one exveption I will make is if I can get a kid into the woods I will go during gun season on our own land only. Other than that bow only for me.
-
I have been for the last 7 years or so, I do have a 10 year old that won't shoot his bow and wants to use a gun, this may have me picking up a firearm again.
-
I own 8 pointers and my hobby is birddog training so I do a lot of shotgun hunting but my second love is my longbow. I do hunt with my sidelock percussion .54 GPR and plan on getting a flintlock next year.
I dont hunt with my modern rifles anymore but if the opportunity called for it I dont have a problem with using one.
I've killed a lot more deer with my bow than with the rifles.
I just plain love to hunt!
-
I'm getting close. I hunt with an old classic rifle when my son asks me to. I don't let him know but I just don't get pumped with the anticipation of rifling a deer anymore. Even so, Id hunt with grenades if it means I get to spend time alone with my boys.
-
Bow only here since middle 80's. Just dont hunt as much as I used too.
-
I might, and I haven't lately, used a shotgun for turkeys otherwise all traditional bowhunting.
-
X 2 I'm with Izzy!
-
I've been a Bow only hunter since 1990, but actually I'm thinking of adding spears and tomahawks into the picture. :bigsmyl:
-
i shoot the bow year round on game, fish and foam, but i still enjoy firearms as well and shoot several different kinds of competition there as well and enjoy hunting waterfowl and upland birds with them. I do not get anything out of hunting deer with one though as i do lots of culling depredation, guide and controll work with rifles and shotguns.
when i hunt for myself i like to get up close and personal and the bow is way to go to get that old lost feeling.I had a buck i was trying to get a shot on a buck yesterday at 15yds broadside and couldnt get drawn on him, i was shaking like a leaf in a hurricane!!! never would have felt like that with gun in hand.
-
Kirk, you can hunt deer with a spear in MO, but only during rifle!
Well, you could a couple years back, haven't seen it in the regs this year, may have to look now.
-
OOPS, it is with atlatl..
From MDC page
Methods allowed during all portions of the firearms deer season, except the muzzleloader portion
•Atlatl, which is defined as a rod or narrow board-like device used to launch, through a throwing motion of the arm, a dart 5 to 8 feet in length.
-
Homemade selfbows only for the last 13 years.
-
My first love is guns and shooting but I must admit that this year the luster of hunting with a gun began fading fast. Great for getting meat in the freezer but there is really no challenge to it. But do love any excuse to be in the woods.
-
I've been only for 9 seasons or so. I've been trad only for about 7 seasons.
