Title: long distance trad shot on a texas pig
Post by: instinctivebowman on December 19, 2011, 10:29:00 PM
i made up some laminated birch arrows for a pig hunt in texas. I think the arrows were about a thuosand grain. The arrow trajectory is pretty interesting to watch. Only trad hunters can appreciate this arrow flight.

Thanks for the cool vid. Good stuff! Perfect representation of "hunt" obstacles including stalk, creeping to the first shot op, & releasing instinctively at unknown distances under max adrenaline & shot pressure. Good training vid.

Any info on shot distances? Bows & draw weights? Like to see bh's also. 1000grains.., Wow!

In real time speed it never looks like the arrows arcs that much. That was a really neat slo-mo shot on a real pig.

Congrats!

im not even sure of the distance on the my shot(the second kill on the video)  Heat of the moment, i didnt even think about distance till later when we watched the footage. I was shocked when i watched the arrow flight. I had no idea it went that high. The first kill was about a 35 yard shot. I was running the camera, Cray ran up to that spot and put one of the best shots ive ever witnessed on an animal.I will never forget the sound it made hitting that shoulder. I could alsmost feel the concussion when it broke.  The sound that arrow made was unreal.  Turn up the volume and listen to that arrow fly. It gives me goose bumps watching it still to this day.  He was using my old 3 piece 65 lb custom bighorn. I was using my 53lb black widow on that hunt.

Thanks for the warm comments,

ive used and still use 4 or 5 different types of broadheads, on that hunt the first pig was a bear 2 blade reazorhead, i use those a lot. They are hard to find anymore. I have about 120 of them left that will hopefully last me the rest of my life. I busted a nice caribou shoulder in quebec with one and it almost went thruogh the other shoulder as well.  The second pig was a big ace broadhead. not sure of the grain. 160 gr i think

I cannot wait to get a hog with a long bow!...A buddy of mine and I were going to do the knife hunt thing but stalking them into bow range without dogs just seems like a lot more fun.

I thought that country looked familiar.  The Nail ranch is only about 30 miles from my house.  Lots of big pigs in this part of the world.  Good huntin'.

You would probably have to record me for several weeks for me to hit a dead target at that distance lol Great footage too.
