I need a good huntin' hat. I found the Stormy Kromer short bill that I really like. They say it's for bowhunting. I just wondered if any of you have shot a long stickbow with one of these on. I HATE it when my string hits the bill of my hat.
Thanks!
-
Been meaning to get one but haven't actually tried one as of yet. Didn't Ron La Clair have something to do with getting that hat made specifically for bowhunting?
-
Those kromer hats are kind of a big deal in da U.P. I haven't tried one though.
-
I've got one, and my string hits the brim if I shoot normally. I bent the brim slightly down and move the hat to the side just a little and then I don't have to worry about it at all. They are very nice hats.
-
Yeah, I heard they have a new short billed one, for us bowhunters. Do they have one that switches from camo to blaze orange for walking around during gun season?
-
I have a regular Kromer, and a pair of sharp scisors made the brim short enough for me. I look like a homeless Wensel, but thats O.K. I guess. Make that a much younger, taller Wensel.
-
Woodduck,
Gray Wolf has several different kromers that will switch from the blaze orange to either of the predator patterns or their new pattern. They are on the sponsors list.

Of course Kromer also makes a brimless version as well. No brim, no worry about string interference.
-
Great hats. They are the "Official Hat" of Ron's camp, ShrewHaven. I haven't worn mine yet this year, it's too warm. But once the temps drop below 40, it never comes off my head. Yes, the shorter bill was done at Ron's request. If I'm not mistaken, they can be had from Ron, or Kustom King.
The Stormy Kromer is to Michigans UP what the cowboy hat is to the West.
GREAT,GREAT hat.

The Stormy Kromer is to Michigans UP what the cowboy hat is to the West.
Actually Randy Gustafson who is a bona fide Yooper from da U.P. and I collaborated to get Kromer to make the short brim version for bowhunters.
It's been pretty popular up there even for non bowhunters. Seems that the locals have discovered that when they're wearin the shorter brim in da bar, they can see the clock on the wall without havin to tip their head back. That way they know when Happy Hour starts. :bigsmyl:
You can get a Kromer on Randys web site http://www.northwoodsoutfitters.com/

I would get a Stormy Kromer, but my wife is highly allergic to wool so I avoid buying wool items to bring into the house. I can't find them in any other material. I use a short-billed acrylic stocking cap/jeep cap like Radar wore in MASH. I do like a short bill to keep out the sun and hide my eyes from the deer while keeping out of the way of the bowstring should I decide to ever come to full draw.
-
Yeah Randy's a good guy he'll hook ya up.
-
I might have to try one of those. Up till now i just been turning my hats sideways(home boy style) and pimpin' through da woods
Josh
-
Josh: I've always thought of the sideways hat as the "Wensel Look". :D
-
The Kromer is a great hat. But, there's no need for a brimless or short-brim. When you're shooting your bow, just turn the conventional Kromer backwards. Then turn it back the normal way when you want to look, well, normal.
-
I just cut a notch in the bill - adds a third anchor reference.
That Stormy K looks like a very servicable topper.
My cheapo hat is a one of those surplus boonie caps - short floppy brim all-round. Cute, too!
-
The trouble I always had by turning my hat backwards was I never knew if I was comin or goin.
....
-
I turn my ball cap around when I shoot out back, but I don't like to do it. I'm about 25 years too old for that look!
-
I saw one Barry Wensel had on in the woody photo with gene. The pattern was like a Woolrich-style brown plaid. Looked all over, can only find the generic red, gray, camo or orange.. any leads here?
-
I just recently got one and I love it, had no problems shooting with it and it kept my head nice and toasty on those cool mornings on the river in Alaska.

Nice picture! Nice hat too! :D
-
Bill, what bow is that? I like the limb profile...nice hat also...I'd like to get one in Predator...
-
Cutty, that's a Wes Wallace "Royal" it was a gift from my good friend Jeff Cooper. Great shooting, sweet bow.
-
Sweet...knew it was quality...by the way, thanks for the heads up on the AD Trad Ribtek combo...that's what I'm using on my heavy LB and it's a bulletproof combo for sure...
-
droptine59 - Yeah, me too looked all over for plaid colors searching the internet but can only find red plaid. Heck, I'd even take green plaid if I could find it.
-
I second droptine59 and zbone! I really want one but cannot find in any other colors than camo, red, or black. I like the color of TexasBubba's though.
-
If I can't find an earthtone plaid, I'm thinking about the charcoal, or one of the predator patterns, except according to Grey Wolf's web site, they don't have the short billed in wool.
Any help out there?

I believe cabelas has other colors.

-
Ron, thanks. I'd like to suggest one that is reversible from blaze orange to camo, and the bowhunter brim, of course.
I feel safer during gun season with blaze orange, while I'm on the move. We can bowhunt without orange but statistics prove it's safer.
-
KUSTOM KING has a few colors that STORMY KROMER will not sell direct!!!!!GO FIGURE
-
I just use a Effanem crusher hat. I have never had a problem with the brim bothering the string, its warm, completely waterproof, and best of all----about 12 bucks.
-
Do not have any idea of how I happened upon this post, but have read through it's entirety, and all have to say, after wiping all the tears from my eyes./ Wear a stockin cap and shades.
-
I wore a short bill Kromer this weekend hunting hogs...no problems with my bowstring.
-
I have two, the brown and the mossy oak and I wouldn't hunt with out it.I shoot a my 64" tomahawk long bow with now problems.
One of the most comfortable hats I have ever worn.

I must have a weird head or something. I wear a standard Kromer all the time and have no string problems. The standard bill is smaller than most ball cap types of hats. But again I likely have a weird head :D
-
Woodduck - I know a version with blaze orange crown exists because I have one. Just checked it out but it doesn't have a brand tag in it.
It's not fully reversible, but the advantage camo top flips forward to reveal the blaze orange. Real effective since the orange is completely concealed otherwise. It's not wool, but a canvas fabric. I think I picked it up at Fleet Farm or similar store.
You could always go with the traditional kromer and keep a knit orange cap in your pocket I suppose.
-
The cowboy in me rebels every time I hear someone call a cap a hat. Hats have brims. Caps have bills.
the SC is a cap. Thanks.
-
Flint Tim,
you do have a wierd head! the only one I've seen lately that rivals it is MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
This right here is the only Kromer I can shoot in. Looks like they are about gone...
Glad I picked up a couple even if they were full price.

i don't have a longbow but i love kromers for shooting a recurve. kromer all the way!!
-
Gordy, the local farm store here sells a Kromer knock off. The flaps on it turn completely down unlike the Kromer.About $18 as I remember.
-
I believe Ron says they have an all black classic Kromer for wearing to church.
-
BubbaBill,
I recognize that hat. Nice to see yer mug. Hope all is well. See ya next time ya come up thisaway I hope.
My Kromer does not interfere with my shootin any more than my shootin interferes with my shootin...
Scotty

I wear one, never had a problem with my compound or the Longbow. This hat works well with the underarmour head net, this pic was taken when it was about -5, my mellon was toasty the entire hunt!

I forgot to mention that Cabelas has all colors. I got this one at Sportsmans Warehouse, they also have a great selection.
