How many of you have bow hunted in red and black wool and been successeful? Any pics of your shirt or coat in the woods? I'm torn between the red and black or green and black Woolrich shirt. Thank's George
That's mostly what we hunted with in the old days, and I don't think that there would be much difference between one or the other to a deer... but I would go green and black just for the look and to be a little less obvious to people (unless you want to be more visible).
That green and black is nice. I should get one too!
I've used both. The deer can't tell the difference. They both tend toward black in low light conditions. Sometimes that's an advantage, when backed into an evergreen, for example. Sometimes it's not, when skylined on a ridge or in a tree, for example.

Swanndri from New Zealand. This one is my lucky hunting jacket ... was my Dad's which h bought in the 1970's and still going strong .
Very cool Ben!!
I'd like to find one in hunter orange checkered like that for my public land forays.
Green & black for me
I've been successful while wearing both. I prefer red/black because it seems more "Old Timey" to me.
Great pics Ben!
I have used both, the green and black I use now because of how it blends in my area.... :archer:
I hunt in a red and black 1950's coat for late season black powder. The coat is big in the arm and hits my string while bow hunting. I do hunt with a traditional patch and ball rifle the same way I do with my bow. Mainly on the ground and everything under 30 yards. I have never had trouble getting busted. I like the red in late season cause other gun hunters may be around. They can pick out the red!
Ben- love the pics!
My early season "outfit" consists of my red/black Filson wool vest over my rust/brown buffalo plaid Woolrich shirt.I have deer look right through me. These are quality wool garments that will last my lifetime.
I use red and black on occasion and believe it is great for deer hunting. I also use it for small game hunting where I want other hunters to see me.
If you are hunting color blind animals....here's how they see it....

Red and black just feels right to me. Like cigars, peanut butter cups and beer. I guess it was how I was raised.
Buy both :goldtooth:
I own an older (bought in the 70s) Woolrich Red/Black coat and a Buffalo shirt! I wish I had a Green and Black we wore Red/Black as it was more visible than the Green during gun season! I wear my Buffalo shirt some when archery hunting mainly use the heavy coat when muzzleloading! Lovem both! Whats nice is they are both USA made!
I've killed 2 deer wearing the red and black. I had deer on me tight and like was said earlier they looked right thru me. I was pretty amazed. It seems the red and black is more abundant if your looking to buy used.
Red and black or green and black. Wont matter as long as you put asat or predator over the top of it. Ok . flame on, but the wider patterns on asat and predator work the same way as green and black squares. They are just a little wider and more open. You wont black out to much at distance with green and black but predator is a little better. Deer dont see predator or asat and i have had people walk by a few feet away and not know i was there. If i could not get asat and predator i would wear green and black. At least in the forest. ymmv.
I hunt in black and red quite often and have killed deer at real close yardage on ground and in tree stands

I've posted this photo a few times already, but since you asked, here it is again:

I have two Woolrich jackets and one pair of Woolrich lined pants. The old timers called the Woolrich outfits Penna. tuxedos.
How about black, red, with a little gray mixed in for good measure?

I have a personal thing against straight red and black. Other colors mixed in are better.
I feel like just red and black are more lumber jackish than hunterish. Now living in a different part of the country, I know my ""feelings" are off base. Never had anything to do with its effectiveness.
i'd rather have gray and black, just so people can't see ya too. i''m not anti-social, or a tresspasser, i just go to the woods for solitude. Its kinda funny having them walk under you on public land and not seeing you.
No picture handy, but have had success in red and black.
I have shot deer wearing the red/black wool shirts, but I do not like the way people look at me when I am wearing it.
Randy, after a situation I experienced at LBL one fall I changed my mind about not being seen by the public while hunting. I was perched in a pine along an old logging road when a lady who was camping up the road decided to use my little piece of the woods for a hasty rest stop . . . I didn't know whether to cough, shout, or say "hello":^)
Gary ,that's funny..........did you say hello?
No, I wimped out Ron ... allowed her to wrap things up and go her way in peace.

:) Probably better for all involved :) LOL!
Gary, you behaved gallantly.
It would still be worth a photo if you happened to know her...
It was an opportunity to hone my hunting skills .. . . like remaining motionless, avoiding eye contact with game, etc.
I had the same thing happen in a Kroger parking lot. I was sitting in the car with kids waiting on the wife.
Great pic BTW Gary!
Thanks for your answers and pics. Now a new question, where's the best place to buy these Woolrich shirts? I'm having a heck of a time finding them.
Gary that looks a whole lot like the plaid pattern most common seen in Fred Bear's photos. I love it!
Bucky,
Take a look at Teresa Asbells's stuff, she has a red/black plaid at times. LL Bean also has a quality line.
Bucky,
A historical aside, this plaid was one of the earliest associated with with the MacGregor clan in the Scottish southern highlands and was sometimes known as 'Rob Roy'.
Best regards, Todd
I still use the woolrich set my dad bought in the 50's, nothing like a vintage Pennsylvania tuxedo to blend into the deer woods.
Stone ... awesome mate !
Mine is my Dads too !
George google Woolrich . Their web comes up. Buy on line. Very expensive 110.00. Also says Campmor has them. Alot of Folks get theirs from Good Will Shops, Salvation Army Shops and even The Big Web Used item site. I bought all mine at Meltzers. They told me I was one of the few that still like the stuff. Go Figure. Bought my pants and 2 shirts there.
Check the auction site, search for men's plaid wool shirts or jackets. You can usually find some really nice stuff for under $25.
Don't go by the listed size on anything you find there, check the measurements because a lot wool clothes made a trip through the washer and drier and a large will often be closer to a medium.
I checked the measurement arm pit to arm pit, sleeve length and distance from the collar to the bottom hem of one of my shirts that is a little big on me. If I see one for sale I like with the same measurement I bid on it.
My last acquisition was a red and black plaid Melton jacket from the 50s that looked like new for $18.
I haunt the local thrift stores as well but wool items are few and far between in the south where I live.
A word of caution, I have heard the one should take any clothing bought off the auction site directly to the washer or dry cleaners as soon as you open the package. There is a slim chance the item came from a house with bedbugs.

A bit of history --- the name "Buffalo Plaid",
it originated in about 1850. Seems that the designer had a small herd of Buffalo--- thus the name -- Buffalo Plaid-- :) )
It still works !
Red and Black remains the most popular color
Green and Black seems to be popular in Maine, Vermont and NH--- NY Hunters mostly wear Red and Black --- IN Scotland the different Clans worn differnt tarten plaids to identify themselves--
