Title: Antler Limb Bolts
Post by: Canadian Idle on December 11, 2011, 12:41:00 PM
I'm not sure if this is a Trade Secret or not, but does anyone know how to fasten the limb bolt to the Antler Burr without the fear of twisting them off. What type of Epoxy or whatever ???
Thanx and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to ALL,.....Lloyd  :wavey:

Do you use a special bolt and counter-bore the burr or ????

I'm no pro, and probably make things more trouble than they need to be, but here's how I do it:
I hollow out the burr to accomodate either just the bolt head or even the brass bevel depending what I've got.
I use a drill bit and a dremmel tool to get it just right. Keep the windows open, burning antler stinks.
I cut an allen key to fit in the bolt and stick out 1/4 inch. I epoxy it in with concrete/metal epoxy, let dry.  I then drill into the burr with a drill bit  slightly smaller than the hex key so that when I force the burr onto the hex key/bolt...it is a tight fit and I have to tap it in. More epoxy where the bolt head or brass bevel fits into the burr and let her dry. I havent had one fail yet.
You can stain the outer edges of the burr to look fresh if it is a worn out bleached burr. I use leather dye, but you can use wood stain too. Heres a set that was pure white that I fixed up....

TBM did an article on that, can't remember what issue. It was quite easy and they used JB Weld.

I find using T-Bolts makes the job easier, and gives you a beefier knob-to-bolt attachment.  Or make a T-Bolt from a Carriage bolt by grinding down two sides.

Seems like I remember that TBM article vaquely abut making your own antler burr limb bolts. It was many moons ago.

I think the article said to put nothes in the bolt with a file so that when you used the JB weld or epoxy to seat the bolt into the burr it would hold better and the burr would not be able to twist or come loose from around the bolt versus if it was  just a round bolt with no notches. The JB weld or epoxy will fill into those notches.Makes sense.

I never did build any though.
