Title: thinking of trying BCY "trophy" string...any thoughts?
Post by: Zradix on December 10, 2011, 03:51:00 PM
anyone try this stuff?

Says it's tuff and helps with vibration...somehow.

Sounds good...

a good compromise between the 452x and the astroflight...trophy is a 452x with gore inside which absorbates better the wax...I have tried these 3 fibers on my ACS...at the same string weight, the astroflight gives the best, the trophy (less speed; a little bit of more noise and vibrations) comes in second and the worst (noise and vibrations) is the 452x.

thank you

I forgot about astroflight.
I've been thinking about the BCY brand.
I've been shooting the 8125....now I guess it's 8125G..

I wonder how 8125 compares to astroflight?

8125 / astroflight?

at the same string weight, the 8125 will be scarcely quicker but more noisy, more vibrating and more rough to work for the string maker...the astroflight is my favourite...my wife (string maker) make  stabilized astroflight femish strings (250/300# of tension during stabilization)wich have zero elongation once stabilized...astroflight need to be frequently waxed for staying perfectly silentfull...it fuzzes quickly, that the only wrong issue...I have not enough shot 8125 strings during hot summer to confirm or not (on trad bow) its bad reputation.

People who have tried the 8190 (not yet for sale) says that it is quicker than the 8125 (4 or 5 fps of more), perfectly stable once stabilized and less noisy than the 8125...it could be the perfect fiber !

Wasn't to impressed with trophy. Astroflight d10 and ultracam are the best string material imo that I've tried.  I have some "Trophy" left if your still interested and want to try some out you can have it.

I can't compare to Astroflight, as I haven't used it, but I can say 8125 is a great material.  I have had no problems with noise or vibration, and it's easy to work with--as easy as Dynaflight '97 for me, and easier than 450+.

I'm curious about the 8190--will see how soon I can get a test spool.

As for Trophy...looks to be very similar to 450+/452X.  I'm sure it will work, but not the best material on the market IMO--Vectran blends lack the durability that 100% or near 100% Dyneema materials have.

Got a FAST reply from Ray at BCY (one of the many reasons I like to deal with them).

Production for 8190 is set for early 2012.  It will be SK 90 Dyneema--WOW!

For a comparison, original FF was SK65;  Dynaflight '97 is SK75, Dynaflight '10 is SK78.

Can't wait to get my test material.  I won't know until I get my hands on it, but this appears to be a significant jump in material quality.  Highest strength and lowest creep to date.  75 to 78 gave a 20% increase in strength...this really has me excited...

chad, you should try the astroflight...there is no comparison between astroflight and 8125 burnishing !

Have you compared Astroflight and Dynaflight '10?  As best I can tell they are both SK78 Dyneema.

I have to admit I am partial to BCY due to the service I've recieved, and I don't burnish my strings.

Chad I have not yet used the D10...my first spool is in a package in a plane betwwen our countries...as soon as I will have recieved it I will do a 110gr string (that's our string weight) and will compare it with my ACS trophy, 452x, astro, D97 (yours if I am not wrong; you had also done those for my 90@28 hexV black douglas 4 years ago!), 8125 strings...I use for the speed a shooting machine, and for the feeling a month of training... sometimes I love to change the strings during the same training...one learn a lot doing like that ! on the ACS my 8125 strings has always been too noisy and for the wheelies I have never get a complete satisfaction cause of the noise and unstabilization (depsite we stabilize 1 hour at 300#).

That is strange concerning the 8125--what is the strand count?  Padded loops?

The only time I had a noise problem with 8125 was one I was trying out years ago--I built it with 18 strands, and it was very noisy.  I built a 14 strand for the same bow (66# at my draw) with the loops padded to 18, and it was very quiet.  Never had a problem getting it stable--it's shown a little less stretch/creep than Dynaflight '97 for me.  'Course that's why I say there's no one perfect answer for everyone--experiences differ.

I was about to invest in Dynaflight '10, but I'm going to hold off a bit longer for the 8190.

12/18 for a 49@28 bow.

Most unusual--but stranger things have happened.  More information for me to file away, and further proof that there are no "one size fits all" answers...

Chad,
What are your thoughts on the 8190?

I never owned a custom string before I tried a SBD 10 strand D10. I was very impressed with how it helped my Widows.

Well I have used d-97 , D-75 thin ,452x , trophy and the new 8190 . I gave out strings to some sucker uuhh I mean friends and the general opinion is in favor of the trophy and is by far my favorite .

The 8190 is working out very well.  It's not a game changer IMO--materials have gotten so good that there's just no room for any huge improvements--but it's quiet with very little stretch/creep.

It's a great material for folks that like small diameter strings without having to go with a low strand count.  The diameter of 8190 is approximately 1/2 that of Dynaflight '97.  Even 16 strands makes a small diameter string.

With the better materials, I think the main differences are how the string is built and....for lack of a better term, advertising hype.  There are no magic bows, no magic arrows, no magic broadheads...and no magic strings.

There is one other thing I forgot to mention--service.  That's why I'm a loyal BCY fan, and don't see myself ever changing.

Thanks Chad,
I finally went through all my FF and need to order more stuff. 4 spools of different colors usually last my family a few years so I was looking for advise like that. I think I'll order some 8190.
