Daniel,
It was great sharing camp with you at Smitty's. I hope we can do it again sometime.
The brush country of Texas is awesome in it's own right for beauty.
BTW, the horns and skull of that longhorn would have been a great souvenir for this particular hunt. I hope you took it back with you.
Thanks for sharing your report and all the photos.
It's been a long time since I've been to Texas.

Daniel, excellent pictures. Your photography skills tell great stories. Can't wait to see what happens to that hog! Congratulations on a memorable hunt.
took a shot at a big boar, hit the shield - no pass through - he went crazy - squealing like hell - he circled around with that bright yellow fletching sticking out of his shoulder .... splashing mud and water all over the place ....
as he opened up his circle and run towards me - you know what I did ????
I dropped my bow, grabbed my knife and started running - had to find out he was not charging me, he run into the open water ..... puuhhha ?!?!?!!!
there was no chance for a second shot - this all happened within a couple of seconds and he scared the hell out of me !!!
I could hear him splashing through the water for a while, leaving me and my shaking knees behind ....
here is where he disappeared ...
after 40 minutes I took off my boots and trousers and started searching with the help of my buddy Chris ...
here is what we found ....

I was not much into arguing with an Alligator - particularly not in pants and barefoot .... so I hope he enjoyed that free meal ...
even though we did not recover that hog it was still a satisfying hunt !!!

I see you made it to the State Capital Building! It is the same as Michigan's, just a different flag over the entrance! :biglaugh:
Very cool pictures. There are way to many reptiles for me to ever think of doing that kinda hunt! I will stick with the griz here in Wyoming. I really enjoyed the photography.

Sounds and looks like you all had a great time, I know I have just reading and looking at the pics. Some great photos by the way.
Thanks so much for sharing.

Great pictures. Looks like a very large time was had by all. Welcome to Texas, Ya'll come back now, ya hear
Thank-you for the pics, love the one where your cradling the deers head in your lap.

Daniel, great thread.
If I can offer some advice, tweezers are good but duct tape will remove all of those little invisible stickers. Don't go to west Tx without it.
Peel some tape out and roll the tape back on itself while still on the roll, (making the adhesive side out) then roll it over the stickers you can feel but can't see. It will remove them.
Looks like a great trip. Thanks for taking us along with you to Texas.
Billy
Cool trip but in the water with gators????? Crazy!!!!!!! Id rather kiss a Grizzly than get in that water with all them snakes and creepy crawly snakes
Thank you Daniel......please keep the pictures coming.
Cool pics.
I didn't know Toyotas' came with a V8
Watch out fer them gators before wintertime! Would have loved to see the boar. Awesome photos and what a trip you guys took...

Daniel you never cease to amaze me my friend.
I truly hope that someday your wanderings will bring you near my neck of the woods.
I'd brew you a great pot of whole bean coffee.
Thanks gain for taking us along on the adventure.
Daniel,
Thanks for the Wild, Wild West Adventure, although at this time over half of your pictures are not showing  there a message attached to the ones not showing saying " You're Popular" due to high veiwing so it seem this thread is getting alot of exposure :saywhat:
This is killing me Daniel! I can't see hardly any of the pics! It says "photobucket bandwidth exceeded" where there is supposed to be a pic.
Anyway, great meeting you and looking forward to meeting again in the future.

Great pics and story Daniel. I hope you killed all those snakes so there's none left when I get down to Texas.
Oh boy great pics and story!! I got a buddy headed that way shortly that I bet is going crazy over this thread.
What a great adventure. I just HAVE to get to texas on a hog hunt! But man standing out in the middle of a pond having a close and personal conversation with Mr. Alligator would have me running, not walking, on water.
Great thread, guys.

good Stuff,. Bud,,, thanks for sharing... :campfire:
looks like yall had a good time!! thanks for the pics!
Im going to laguna for the jan hunt, maybe there want be as many rattle worms out. i had some friends huntin down there while you were there and they said they were thick until the front rolled through. one had 4 under his tripod at one time, and the blue indigo were getting up in the engine compartments of there vehicles.
Its too bad they want let you harvest all that pretty bow backing on the refuge!!
I don't know what changed but I can see the pics now. Looks like you had a great time everywhere you went Daniel! It was great meeting up with you and I look forward to a possible hunt together in the future.
See ya later,
Bisch
Nice pics.
Nice pics!
Thanks for taking us a long :)
Daniel - I was admiring your photography skills when I realized some of the pictures (of you), were taken by me :-). I guess that's what happens when your hunting partner wears a camera on his chest....I'm always snapping candid shots..
It certainly was a lot of fun Daniel. Rarely do I meet someone who wants to hunt for as long and as hard as you did. I think many people get the impression that Texas is a state that offers only high fenced hunts but you've definitely experienced the other side...the gruelling public hunts in swamps, mud flats, the hill country, and the thickest brush imaginable.
I always learn something new when I hunt with you and you're always welcome in my camp :)

There are too many crazy stories to tell but I'll delve into one of the shorter ones...
Daniel and I were hunting a 35,000 acre refuge down south, posted up on 2 different ends of a hunt area. I was off to myself by a vast expanse of mudflats. It was early and I was glassing some far off reeds with my binos when I saw two huge brown boars emerge from the other side of the flats, covered only by a small clump of reeds.

Glad you cleared that one up Chris!! LOL!! Saw that pic and thought I walked into "Tradguys gone wild"!!
I had good wind so I started the excruciatingly slow process of trudging towards them in the knee deep mud. At times the mudflats opened up into tributaries then more mud. I finally made it across the expanse and was about 20 yards from the hogs, sidestepping for a better shot. I started to draw back then caught movement in the reeds. Creeping up on the boars was a huge gator, and were were all in the center of a mud flat, 150+ yards from shore. I pondered the situation then turned and decided to make haste. After I had trudged about 75 yards I hear something and looked back to see one of the big boars running at me from across the flat!!? At first I thought the gator chased him out but the boar was coming directly towards me. He slowed and I turned to face him and we stared eachtother down for a few minutes at 50 yards. He held his ground and I decided to leave, I was perflexed, but more worried about the gator than the hog.
Whats even crazier is that I mentioned the episode to another hunter and he immediately went into the flats in search of the pigs, no fear, solo!

Daniel - its was fun! I'll be in touch!

We were shooting at a running deer target about 15 yards in front of us. Great time for sure. That is Smitty's daughter and her 4 children, Daniel and me. Smitty was setting the target and letting it go for us to shoot at.

Thanks very cool pics
Great !! Thanks for sharing
Wow, you fellas were living up. Congrats on a good hunt,
Great hunt and thread, looks like a blast. Except for the big gators:) That picture of the indigo was great, what a neat snake.
Norman - yes those Indigos are great snakes. They are one of the largest nonvenemous snakes in the country.
They're beautiful snakes and great to have around since they eat rattlesnakes. Our indigos are protected under state law and i think the easterns are federally protected.
looks like a heck of a trip...great photos
Awesome pics and read along,Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome thread! Thanks for sharing! :campfire:
Cool, looks like a blast.
Missed some pics the first time around...those black&whites/sepias were great. Shows how much you need or don't need :)

:bigsmyl: Been There... :bigsmyl:
Let`s continue the hunt.
Found me a nice and promising looking spot the other day.
Waterhole with heavy used trails, fresh tracks all over the place !!!!!
I placed myself up in a tree ..... waiting for something to walk by ...
..... about 30 minutes later I had some does coming in ... my heart started pounding ...
and then, just out of the blue, a nice 8 pointer stood underneath my tree ... just a tad too far right for taking a shot ...no window to shoot through .... come on boy, 3 more steps to the left and you are mine !!!!
As the pounding of my heart went crazy, beating like a POW WOW drum he spooked ... circled around and was gone ....
While I was still wondering why he spooked, I heard something coming in to my left ... I see something big ..... it`s brown and huge ..... calm down - don`t forget to pick a spot ..... here it comes ..... yeah, keep walking ..... aaaaaand finally .... here it is ... %x=&"?#% ...
Well, it was exciting at least.
