Title: How Much Wool Clothing Do You Own!
Post by: Scott Teaschner on December 08, 2011, 06:44:00 PM
I just got done looking at the Classic Bowman post. I thought to my self maybe I dont own enough wool. Here is my list and I pretty much use it all. Some gets worn more than others but I love em all the same. Here is my list:

Filson products:
2 coats Double Mac Timber camo, black Mac
2 pair of Mac paints, 1 red plaid, 1 Timber camo
3 mack vests green, black, and grey plaid which I wear every day from fall to spring and it 10years old.
Outfitter sweater the heaviest sweater I have ever seen.
Morino wool skull cap wear every day all day.

Swandri
Old Swandri jacket in Skyline camo. Best wool for the money. I cant rember what I paid but it was not much at Screaming Eagle in the day. A 20 some year old I was hunting with said thats cool vintage camo. I just looked at him seems like I just baught it yesterday!

Woolrich
Man this jacket is old it was given to me by a friend I think it was his dads. Its tough and its red plaid I just love it.

Schaffer
I have a nice vest more western looking but good quality and warm. Makes me look punchy if I am out riding circle. If any one knows what that means I would be surprised!

Smart Wool
Tons of socks some mismatched but still working fine.
My all time favorite Marino wool long johns there the best no itch.
Caps
So many its to hard to rember but a lot of rail road hats. One stormy Kromer and the best is my Crown Cap brand made in Canada.

I may have forgot something I will have to go look. I will try to get pics of this stuff in action.

I have too much to enumerate everything.  Coats by Filson, Gray Wolf, KOM, Swanndri, vests by Filson, Gray Wolf, Bibs by Gray Wolf, Cabelas wool pants, whipcord and heavyweight, sweaters by Swanndri and Donnegal?, underwear by Smartwool, Woolpower, and Minus33, shirts by Pendelton and Cabelas whipcord,  hats, gloves, socks etc.  I wear it all, but mostly I use the Swanndri coat and Filson vests with Smartwool underwear on an everyday basis.  It's all good, but I especially like having a variety of weights for different levels of activity and different weather conditions.  Ask me if I like wool clothes.

Hudson bay blanket boat ( very warm! )

Filson's Double Mac coat, camo ( Very warm )
"            Mac.  " Red and Black checker.

Swanndri shirt in brown
  "     jacket in green

Gray Wolf vest

various hats

Three pairs of pants

Alpaca sweater
Wool sweaters, one in camo.

Various Long Johns and sox

I think that is it.

Woolrich Stag Jacket
LL Bean zip up shirt jac
2 LL Bean shirts
1 LL Bean pants heavyweight
1 Mil Surplus pants mid weight
1 Mil Surplus pants whipchord

Socks:
Patagonia
Mil Spec
Merino
Classic rag wool

Don't need much more than that in NC. The wool is nice even in weather that does not require long johns. The "itch" does not bother me (must be my Scottish blood) but when it is not above freezing all day I will definitely layer with the long johns.

I have one pair of pants, most of my bow hunting is done in september here and it in the 80s most of that time. I have a bunch of camo called cool max with tons of little hols in it. I almost never get to hunt the late seson cause I have a hard time passing on little bucks just begging to get shot  :knothead:   But that jerky is a blessing in the duck blind

My old man fell through the ice when we where fishing. I pulled him out by laying across the ice and reaching out with the auger. It was deep and he could not kick up on the ice. This all happened quickly. Well I pulled him out and I said we better go home. He said no he wanted to fish. He had on his Filson paints. He fished for about and hour or so before the water in his pac boots chilled his feet bad. He said he was fine  he just could not feel his feet anymore.

I've jumped on the wool band wagon. Love the stuff. Socks, Asbell pullover, Minus33 base layers. I've got a Woolrich Buffalo shirt coming for Christmas. It doesn't get too cold down here, but it gets cold enough ( and windy)

Not enough is right; I'm convinced that my whole hunting wardrobe should consist of nothing but wool and the occasional piece of fleece.  Slowly getting there.

Minus33 1/4 zip shirt (light grade), t-shirt, socks
First Lite 1/4 zip (mid-grade) in ASAT
Cabela's 6-pocket pants (green pair and another gray pair)
SmartWool socks
Some kind of cheap military issue gloves
Asbell pullover -- oh, and one of her wool haversacks (that thing is great)
A good dozen random sweaters of various thicknesses that I picked up at Goodwill last year for about $3 to $5 each; whole hunting camp uses these for various layers now (one really windy weekend last year, I convinced everyone to try wool and they've since become converts)

I'm a wool addict.  I have not tried some of the newer synthetic fabrics out there that many like, especially sitka gear, which I will someday, but good wool is very tough to beat in my opinion.  I use both grey wolf and sleeping indian for outer layers.  But to be honest the best stuff I have found is smart wool for base layers.  I really doubt this stuff can be topped.  I wear it CONSTANTLY both for hunting and for work.  In fact...I just got done ordering some more of it.
Buy both layers of this stuff. DONT TRY TO SKIMP!  Wool works wonders in layers.  I wear the lighter 200 gram layer constantly at work in temps from really cold up to about 60 degrees.  If I am hunting in a treestand in the early season...I have it on.  The stuff keeps you warm when it is cold and cool when it is warm.  Plus it has silver in it, which helps to stop it from stinking.  I tried under armour and hated it.  The next layer of this stuff is 400 gram.  In cool weather during deer season I will have both layers on...and then either grey wolf or sleeping indian as an outer layer.  My friends always marvel at how I am always warm even in cooler temps, with less clothing on than they have.  They are always wearing like 5 layers of some other fabric and are always freezing cold!
Wool is a great insulator but not so great at blocking wind.  This problem is easily solved.  First of all.  Don't skimp on the layers.  2 layers of smart wool works better than one thick layer. This makes a major difference.  Buy both layers of the smart wool and use them accordingly.  If it is really windy, then you can use some other fabric as an outer layer to block the wind.  But honestly, I have never needed to do this since I started wearing both layers of smart wool.  Just today I was at work wearing just one layer of smart wool under a flannel shirt, while everyone else was wearing big bulky carharts. I was warm and they were still cold.  Finally one of the guys asked how I could be outdoors all day with such little clothing.  I told him it was because of the smart wool...he was interested in it untill I told him what it costs.
Cost is another issue.  Good wool SEEMS expensive.  But its really not in the long run.  The stuff works better than anything I have ever tried...and it lasts forever.  I have a coat from grey wolf that I wear all the time that is over 12 years old, and it looks brand new. For a guy looking into investing in some good wool the initial cost can be intimidating.  My recommendation is to work from your skin out.  By this I mean..the first thing I would buy would be both sets of smart wool.  Then maybe down the road invest in a good outter layer by grey wolf, or sleeping indian...or classic bowman.
The biggest mistake people make with wool is trying to mix it with other fabrics.  A buddy of mine bought a very expensive set of outter layer wool.  Instead of complimenting it with some great wool core layers, he decided to skimp and bought cotton core layers.  Cotton is worthless as a core layer except in warm weather.  The two fabrics are only fighting each other.  Cotton is supposed to hold moisture..to keep you cool.  An exception to this is brushed cotton like carhart material, which works great as a wind block outter layer.
As far as wool with windblocker materials..here are my thoughts.  Alot of companies make excellent wool garments with the option of a wind blocker.  I have a pair of bibs from grey wolf with the wind blocker.  If I were doing it again...I would not get the wind blocker.  Instead..I would spend that money on another layer of wool.  In my opinion...the wind blocker needs to be on the outside of the garment...not the inside.  Liteloft or comformax is a great windblocker...but it would work better if it were on the outside of the wool garment.
All in all, I still feel wool is very very hard...if not impossible to beat as a hunting clothing.

I thought I was doing pretty good until I saw some of the piles listed on this thread. Anyone who thinks they have too much can gladly send it my way. Sweaters and bibs are my favorite. Hmmmmmm, think I need to visit the Filson site again soon. If you are concerned with wind, try the Cabela's wool knited zip up with wool fleece inside and wind shear in between. This one of my favorites.

Before Walmart ran our local sports shop out of business they used to carry Woolrich clothing and would mark everything way down through the summer. Over a few years I picked up a coat, shirt, pants, and vest for half price. Add to that a Goodwill wool shirt and you have my wardrobe.

Through all my years of hunting I have never had an issue with wind penetrateing. But it is probably do to the layering.

Love wool!  I bought some when I first started to buy more hunting gear and then got into synthetics for a couple years. The synthetics are now replaced again with more wool. I was never warm in all the layerts of synthetics i had and they didn't hold up.  My favorite wool is Filson. I've got a Grey Wolf wool jacket that really like the fit on but it's not as wind resistant as the Filson wool but i still wear it. Wish Filson would come out with light brown plaids.

I have a Fison mackinaw coat which I really like. Also, 5 sets of wool underware, which December thru February, I will wear every day. Tons of Smartwool socks, but, I have just discovered Darn Tough socks from Vermont. They are the best socks out. I have KOM pants, coat, shirt and hats, since 1994. Always liked the camo pattern and this is my second set. I had a swannie coat, but ended up selling it. Never was thrilled with it even though lots rave about them. Anyhow, wool is the only stuff I wear. Maybe, Im old school, but, have yet to discover anything better. Growing up I would sleep inbetween wool blankets, no sheets and still love it.

Lots, but most of it is homemade.

My wife can sew anything and for the most part, it's better than you can buy, but I do have bibs and several pants that I bought years ago which are commercial.

I tend to not wear the wool until the weather gets pretty cold.

4dogs,
I too used to be a fan of union suits, loved the fact you had no drafty backside in case your top got pulled above your bottoms and left the dreaded plumber's butt crack scenario !

However, the tail on my Ulffrotte' top is so long and made the way it is that is never ever a issue again. It is contoured on the sides and very long in the tail so you actually wind up with a double layer around your lower back if your bottoms are pulled up enough and keeps you warmer than a union suit. I know the Ulffrotte' stuff is expensive, or seems that way when you have to buy it, but in the end it is worth every dime !!! I am 4 or 5 seasons now into mine and don't know how I made it without them ?

Zero. None.
Don't take this wrong to all you wool fanatics but I don't own or use any. Now if I was gona be hunting Alaska on a Moose john float trip I'd take nothing but wool. Why because it's best quality is it insulates somewhat when it's wet. Ain't nobody on here bragged about it's wind stopping ability or weight or smell when wet.

For the average joe hunting 4 or 6 hours at a time and no farther than 30 minutes from a warm house or truck if they suddenly get drenched from a soaking there are MUCH better garments out there. JMHO but there is no wool in my closet! lol

I have Asbells, Filsons, Woolrich, Swanndri, Pendleton, army surplus, SallyAnns, and homemade knit stuff that my wife produces. I wear rain gear over it as needed, and wind blocking is taken care of just fine that way.
My wife makes me hats and socks, and gives me the scrap yarn. Now I have wool string silencers that match my hat!
As an old Norwegian fisherman here says:
"When you are wearin da wool, when you are cold and wet, you are warm and dry."

NoCams, thanks for your response. The problem I have with regular tops and bottoms is that I have no ass and the waist keeps riding down and unlike some of the young guys I see these days it drives me nuts, hence the union suits and bibs but the best I can find recently are the duofolds and they are still a blend.

Aside from socks I have a pair of inexpensive Columbia wool pants that I wear under my bibs during late season (the pants are about a windproof as a screen door). I have an insulated Woolrich jacket I got on clearance at Gander Mountain several years ago that I like on chilly early season hunts, and a KOM Bowman jacket I won at a raffle that I use quite a bit.

I'm down to only 6 pair of socks. Tried on my wool a few years ago before a trip, my wife said the humidity here must have caused it to shrink. (guess that was a nice way of saying I gained a bunch of weight). She gave it all away!

Now she wishes she wouldn't have done that, cause I've lost the weight and now looking to replace it all.

I have a lot.  Probably too much.  It doesnt all get worn in a season.  I have Sleeping Indian, KOM, Filson, GWW, Weatherby, Woolrich, and custom made wool clothes for my flintlock season.  You can't beat wool as a base layer and a top layer as well.

Respectable but I need more:

what I have:
meriono undies and about 10 pairs of various wool socks
An army sweater, woolrich jack shirt, Filson Greenwood jacket - too fancy for wearing in the woods.  A filson makinaw hat and countless scarves and gloves.

I need:

More merino underwear
A pair of good pants
more jack shirts
another army sweater as a backup

Lets hope santa is good to me. ...
