i'm in need of a decent daypack. something compact but can pack out meat when i get lucky.
a buddy of mine just got an X2. looks like a great pack. i checked it out on a recent hunt together and it fits the bill nicely. till i tried it on. no where near the adjustment needed in the harness to fit me. the shoulder harness isn't adjustable for torso length. even with the straps fully lengthened the waist belt was around my guts. didn't feel comfortable at all. i would buy one in an instant if it had a vertically adjustable harness.
the search continues. i'm now thinking about the J34 or the warhammer.
is the J34 too big as a daypack?
any other brands to checkout?

I don't know about your needs, but I got my Eberlestock from Whip here, and am very happy.
I don't know how tall you are Clint, but I'm 6"2" and my X2 fits great. That's too bad it doesn't fit you because I think it's the best all around pack, especially for the price.
The J34 is a great pack, but is a bit bigger. I find the bigger the pack, the more stuff I end up carrying.

I have use the Eberlestock Drangonfly "just one" for years. It has been the best pack I have owned personally. It is fully adjustible pack that you can use as a day pack to full on expedition pack. I like a pack I can haul a big load out of meat with in comfort. I have use my pack to haul pop up blinds,duck decoys,elk/deer 1/4's,float tubes,wades,finns ect... you get the point it's just handy. The gun saber is the only thing I don't use much other than for water bladders,extra arrows. Most important thing is to find one that fits you best,good luck.
You're right, the X2 doesn't offer the adjustment for torso length. I'm 6'3" and I like the fit, but everyone is different, and you need to find a pack to fit you.
Prior to getting my X2 I did use a J104 which was has now been renamed the J34. I did use it as a day pack, and as long as you don't load it up completely it worked fine for me. A little large, but very workable. It is a very versitle pack that can handle one heck of a load.
Another option is the X1 pack. It is about the same size as the X2, but with a different configuration on the compartments. It also comes with a built in gun scabbard similar to the J34.

That's too bad about the fit of the X2 because I absolutely love mine.
Eberlestock packs are great packs I have a x2 and have packed out 2 deer in it this year I love it but if you are looking for a pack with more adjustment I would go with the eberlestock blue widow. my dad uses his as a day pack by keeping it shrunk down but if you need to haul a load it is expandable to haul as much as you can carry when he keeps it shrunk down for day hunts its not much bigger than my x2. If I didn't already have a x2 for a day pack and a cabelas frame pack for an expedition pack I would buy a bluewidow and use it as a double duty pack. Just my 2 cents hope you find a pack that works for you.
You might also try Mystery Ranch out of Montana, I have used one of these in my military duties and it has been great...plus it's vertically adjustable...
I have an x1 and love it. I have a long torso and the adjustablity fits the bill. I don't even notice the gun scabbard when not in use.
