Title: Anybody wingshoot crows?
Post by: psychmonky on December 05, 2011, 01:03:00 PM
We used to use shotguns but getting in some low cover where you can call them in close and arrow them is a blast!

Just wondering if anyone else does it?

I shoot at every crow I can, but I haven't managed to hit one yet.  That would be a cool trad-bow trophy!

I killed one many years ago. I think I was 16 or 17 at the time and was shooting a recurve someone had given me (wish I had kept it) and the kill was completely luck. I mean that crow had to have had a death wish to chase down the flight of my arrow as he did.

We've done it before. You gotta get that 1st one or the hunt is over. If you get him, the rest will stay around and you can hit them pretty good. It's like anything else, you hafta pick a feather to hit, don't shoot at the whole bird.

Just a reminder, there is now a season in many states on crows in case some don't know.

Some years ago we made a deal with Mexico(their national bird is a crow) that if they wouldn't kill bald eagles in their country then we in the USA would at least make a season on crows to offer at the very least some protection in our country for the crow. So please check your game laws on crow hunting before you head out to hunt them.    :)

Crows are also very smart. It has been determined that they can at least count to as much as 3. They have also been known to use tools to get to food, among other interesting feats.

And, yes, some people eat crow. Knight and Hale say that it tastes somewhat like duck.

I read of a crow in a research study that was bending wire to make tools to get food...the thing was that it had been raised in captivity so they knew it had never seen tools or hooks or been taught to make them.

The bird simply studied the problem, looked around at the materials it had to work with, and built what it needed to get the food.

They are smart.

I guess if ducks ate carrion, they would taste like crows.  :bigsmyl:
I kind of like crows. They're better with tools than some people I've seen.
Dave.

Crow hunting is a blast especially with a bow. I use to watch Fred Bear chase "exotic" game all over the world but one episode showed him hunting crows! I thought HECK I have crows around here, have hunted them off and on for 35 years.
Short answer yes I have took several on the wing but mostly when they are just landing or taking off. Like any hunting theres a helluva learning curve. And if you don't think crows aren't extremely smart then don't even try, take up chess instead. Theres a show floating on the TV now that is totally about crows, how smart they are and all the studies going on all over the world on them right now. Interesting show, suggest you watch it! As for hunting plan on wearing your very best wild turkey camo and learn to call with your mouth and imitate what they do. Their vocabluary is extensive and last hunt where the tallest tree is not out of your range. They will come in tree top high and if that's out of your range your screwed. I could go on.

As big as they are, they're about as easy to hit as doves. I've gotten my closest by trying to anticipate where they will be when the arrow gets there, because even if they are on the ground when you shoot, they will not be anywhere near there when your arrow gets there if you aim at them. Even missing them is fun though!

i havent hunted crows with a bow, but i have bow killed over 50 pheasant with the Pheasant Spear. Im sure pheasant are probably harder to kill than  crow. Not as easy to hit, and probably shooting at them further thuogh

You have your work cut out for you to kill a crow with a bow.

Not saying it cant be done, but them are some smart critters..

A trophy for sure to one who can get it done!!!!

Yeah! I bet you could use an owl decoy to get them in closer.

I've been shooting AT crows for a long time. Never hit one yet but it sure is fun!

One of my favorite things is to stand along the edge of a neighboring hay field and take long shots as they pass over between woodlots. I've come really close but the crow usually sees it coming and dodges the arrow. What a great way to spend a summer evening.

I thought the national bird was a cara cara?   ( yes, I realize the flag depicts a golden eagle)

From my "member interview" some years back:

(TG)- What or who first got you involved in traditional bow hunting?

(Killdeer)- It is something inside, I guess. Hunting is a very spiritual thing for me. When I was growing up, there always seemed to be somewhere that I could go to explore Nature. When I got into trouble, it was usually because I would forget the time and be gone long enough for my mom to worry. I was allowed to have a bow at eight. At thirteen, I read "The Archer's Bible", a new book by Fred Bear. I shot at my first critter (a crow) at 16 or 17. I knew nothing about hunting, seasons, or anything. At that age, one is so sure of what is right, and just, and noble, well, I was a complete snob. I hated gun hunters, it was just too easy, and had wiped out the passenger pigeons, dodo birds and nearly erased the buffalo herds. I was sure of my superiority, and knew that I was perfectly correct in launching that shaft. I knocked a tail feather off and lost my home-made "bird bolt".

Is here a lesson here?     :biglaugh:
