Title: Dark brown wool pants?
Post by: Mojostick on December 04, 2011, 09:04:00 PM
I usually wear camo, but if I want to do a "plaid hunt", I'd like to find a nice pair of dark brown wool pants.
Nothing heavy because I can layer longjohns, but good quality.

Any links for some good dark brown wool "hunting pants"?

I've had good luck at the Thrifty's. Usaually dress pants but they will last a couple of seasons for $5.

Also I just came up with a replacement for the Green German Army pants (they have been my favorite for 10 years, and finally just got too threadbare in the crotch to wear any more)

The Herb Phillipson's here in NY sell Mil. Surplus. They have some nice Canadian Army wool pants for $19.99. Olive drab. Not as heavy as the German's - which is probably not a bad thing

I went the wool and plaid route this year too.  If you're not just dead-set on brown, Sportsman's Guide has some East German military wool slacks in gray for $19.99 a pair.  They wear like iron, have an adjustable waist, and look pretty nice to boot. The gray blends well in the woods.  I use one pair for hunting and one for dress slacks.  In fact, I just got back from a church Christmas play wearing them.

Edit: Forget to mention I've taken two deer by hunting from the ground in my hunting pair this season.  Both deer were inside 30 yards and with my Asbell Piney Woods plaid pullover and gray wool slacks, they never knew I was in the world until it was too late.  I also had a herd of four deer within 18 yards and they were looking right through me until one of them busted me drawing my bow.

I bought Swiss Mil surplus pants from Sportsmans Guide for my Colorado hunt in Sept. They were 2 pair for $25. Well made, adjustable waist band, button front and came in a gray color. The only thing don't like about them is the belt loops are for only a 1" belt.

not wool, but I have been wearing carhartt and duluth trading company firehouse pants and work great.

I gave up camo this year as well, had more deer under my stand than any previous year.

Sportsman guide had a DEAL on gray east German military pants about a year ago, 4 pair for $29. These are very well made, mid weight and generously cut for extra comfort. The pants color is is gray but has a unique oak tree bark tint of gray, blends perfectly with the woods.I have been machine washing them in cold water on a gentle cycle with no shrinkage.

Here a picture of the pants I bought that I snagged off the auction site. Not me in the picture, my waist hasn't been that small since 1967.

I didn't need 4 pair so I sold two of them, put one new pair back to use when I wear out pair #1. Don't think I will wear out pair #1 in the near future as they are made to last.

Sportsman's Guide quit carrying these pants but they are still available on the auction site last time I looked but not at the giveaway price I bought mine at.

Eric, I may order a pair of those if they are long enough for my legs.  Do you know what the inseam length is??

Rodney, how long are the pants you have?

I know it's sacrilege, but a certain large outdoor chain that starts with a "C" has a really good deal on washable wool pants right now (green, not brown). I've been impressed with them, especially at the current price. They're thick, retain their size/shape when washed, and have cargo pockets.

I bought the Large size and they are a 32" inseam.  I also need to correct my previous post and state that they are $19.99 for TWO pairs, not one pair.  So, some mighty fine wool pants for 10 bucks a pop.

Got a pr. of Cabela's washable wool pants last month for $49.00 which was almost half off the regular price. Dark gray with cargo pockets.

Rodney, what's the waist size of your size large?  Thanks

I wear a 36 and these fit nicely.  They have an elastic band in the waist so they could be let out or cinched tighter.  I think they have a Medium size as well.  There's a sizing chart on their website.  The Large worked great for me.
