Title: Grohmann knives
Post by: yukon chuck on December 03, 2011, 12:11:00 PM
I'm hoping this is "trad related" because a trad hunter is asking the question about an item used while hunting.
Not sure where else to post this.
I am looking for opinions on Grohmann knives, especially the #1 and #2 knives, as all around good field knives to be used for field dressing and skinning. The somewhat unique blade shap and handle shape and position have me questioning.
Thanks,
Chuck

Just noticed a similar thread in the forum for knives by members. Some good info there. Wasn't sure about posting there because my question was about a commercially made knife.

Grohman knives are very well made and I am sure you would be pleased to own one.I have carried the #1 and #4 with me for years. They make quick work of a Deer or Moose.

I have a bird and trout model and use it for everything fromm elk to cottontails.  I like it a lot.  I ruined the sheath by following a post on treating the sheath with hot wax to make it hard. It does make the sheath hard-but also brittle and the sheath cracked when I sat on it. NOw it wears of sheath of beaaver tail leather.
but the knife and sheath are great.

Kpete...I really like the size of the trout model(#2), as I'm not a fan of knife overkill.  I have been wondering about that model for use mostly on Whitetails. Thanks for the input.

I carry the #1 as my primary hunting knife.  A bit much for squirrels but perfect as a utility/whitetail/turkey knife.

I carried a #2 this year and really like it.Worked great on a moose in Quebec and a whitetail at home. The shape of the blade and handle work well. It takes an edge easly as well. Nice knife without breaking the bank.

I have had for years a stag handled Grohmann #3 Boat Knife and it holds a very nice edge.

I recently acquired both #1 and #2. They are stainless, and very nice for the money. Because they are new, I am not sure how well they will hold an edge. Very comfortable, nice sheath and easy to carry.

I believe the originals were made by Russell, and sold by Eddie Bauer in Seattle. The knife won an award for design back in the 60's.

I can't say enough about my #2. Far from being just a 'bird & trout' knife, it is a blade shape that is very versatile for a whole variety of tasks, including deer. Easy to sharpen and holds an edge well. One of my favorite knives for sure.

I gutted two whitetails yesterday with my #2 and it was still very sharp in the end.  Split sternum on both.

I had a #2 a few years ago that I got as a gift and left it laying on the ground when I killed a doe on public land.  Didn't realize it was gone till I got home.  I went back a week later and couldn't find it.  Someone had a lucky find they are a great knife.

I've carried a #1 since the '70's. My brother has used his "Trout & Bird" knife for everything from Bluegills to moose. I like 'em

i carry a Grohmann folder . Tp be honest I bought it on a whim , all the while knowing I'd prefer a Carbon blade etc

Thankfully , its easy to sharpen and built like a tank . A very nice bit of kit that doesn't look like it was made to assist in the commando raid intent on over throwing a government ...

Any of guys use the sharpening steel that Grohmann sells? If so, how is the quality of that steel and how well does it function?
Thanks again for all the input.

I have thought of getting the Deer and Moose Model. Anyone have thoughts on whether it will do more than a #2?

I like all of the four inch blade models. The #101 is my favorite followed closely by the #3.  The #1 is a distant third. It is all a matter of how they fit my hand. All of the blade shapes are quite useful. You cannot go wrong with a Grohmann Knife. Find one that feels right in your hand and enjoy. I have only met one person who owned a Deer & Moose. He said he liked it, but not any better than his #2 or #3. He also had a #104 Mini Skinner and liked it quite well. A real bonus is Grohmann has some of the best customer service I've encountered.

I have a "bird and Trout" knife and love how it sits in my hand perfectly. For the most part, a great knife for general cutting duties but the steel could be a bit harder. The blade takes a nice edge but, doesn't hold it very long.

Anyone interested in Grohmann Knives might want to take a look at their web-site.  They have #100 Large Skinner aka "Outdoor Dream" 2nds on sale in the clearance section.  I've never held one, but it looks like one heck of a good general purpose field knife.

You can also call them to find out if they have any additional knives as 'seconds'.  Last week I checked and they had some #1's reduced 50% but they were not listed on the website.

Love the Canadian Belt style! I have a Grohman in the classic style, a Murphy (1095 steel), an ML custom, and a Cold Steel.  The Cold Steel has a superior stainless to the original Grohman, but the handle is just plastic.

I've used the Grohmann #2 and the Cold Steel imitation side by side, and found the CS blade to be thicker and not as useful, imo. But for $12 for the CS, it's not a bad backup that you don't have to care about.

Ya, the price point makes it pretty easy to use / abuse the CS.  But I think the CS takes and holds an edge better than Grohmann stainless imo. It comes wicked-sharp, the Grohmann SS does not. It takes a little work to get the edge where I like it to be.

The Grohmann high carbon would be my first choice though - great edge, easy to sharpen, and the blade ages beautifully.

Put my #2 to work on skinning a pair of wt does this morning.  Easy work and still sharp!
